“Typical”? More like a-”Typical”! Whoa! Bad joke. But props where props are due and all that, we stacked Mute Math at #3 on our casual but totally definitive list of history’s greatest backwards videos of all time forever and ever for “Typical.” A few months later, the MM guys wanted to make an impression with the tune on Kimmel, which they did last night late night. No, no Bonnanude streaker (NSFW, kids); the Math went and recaptured the magic of their YouTube smash by recreating the backwards…um…ness of “Typical” in Jimmy’s studio, shot for reversed shot. Sorta cool to see the results, but sorta hilarious to see how not into it the crowd is. Think about watching a backwards video being recorded live; it’s gotta be like Blue Man Group gone bad, less the blue.

okay, great that you guys can mouth the words to your own songs, we all know you can dance and all. but the way they hyped this, i’m a little meh and feeling let down. that drummer is amazing though… :)

    Backwards is the new treadmill?

If they fucked shit up like that on stage, I’d bother seeing them instead of having overlooked the album. Kinda still doubt it though…

    PLAY TRANSFORMERS

That had to’ve been dull to watch live. The video was cool, but this is just a bit silly. They’re a good band, though.

    LOL @ the Transformers theme.

The music could have been Delirious? or Hurricane #1, but the performance was amazing – they just jumped around so much – did they hurt themselves? the colours! the movement! I’m having a sexy aneurysm!

Interesting choice to re-enact their official video. I’ve seen them twice now and they put on a pretty solid and entertaining live performance… but that wasn’t really the greatest representation of it. Man those people must have been bored, or just confused, to watch them do it all backward. Mutemath already take it up to a whole other level in their live performances… they really didn’t need to pull the backward trick.

you guys are pretty damn jaded to think that watching something so out of the ordinary as a band destroying a stage in reverse to a backwards song for only four minutes would be boring.

and i thought mtv was supposed to have obliterated attention spans back in the 80′s. i guess it’s stereogum that is grinding it to dust?

  9. bmckim  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2007

did they actually perform it backwards? or did they do it forwards and then it was replayed backwards?

monami: damn right. the video was pretty fun, though i’d give the song a B at best. blame mtv, but not specifically stereogum. if you’re going to go there, blame internet chat/forum bitching and complaining as a whole, for that’s how we’ve all become such jaded, demanding bastards.

bmckim: if you were to play this video in reverse, you’d see it as the audience saw it. it was then reversed to give you what you just watched. the band performed this ‘backwards’ and the result was reversed so that it looked like a video played ‘forwards’ along with backwards video oddities like jumping in reverse, paint splattering backwards and so on, but all of this is obvious upon not-so-close inspection.

  11. Yeah, I don’t think the audience got the best show, though it’s always fun to see people sprayed in the face with paint.

There are things in this world that defy explanation. The only tip I can give to you is check out LuxuriaMusic.com. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

I too agree that they’re a solid band and that performance, while cool, didn’t do the band justice in a live sense. Last year when they played Voodoo Fest in New Orleans, me and an artist from another band were walking around the grounds and it took everything in us to pull away from their set only seconds into it (his band was due on stage soon).

  13. ugh this band is awful.

    really cool idea though.

this band is so fucking awful.

and to jamIE: HA Delerious? best comment on stereogum in a long time.
