Nice call, brian 586, I was just going to post that. When Perez Hilton knows better than to dignify this with a post that totally implicates that it’s her, it’s a sign that maybe you should back off. Prudes or not, every complaint you make on Stereogum ultimately (ironically) supports it. If you have a problem with the content, quit perpetuating it by helping it rapidly become the most viewed and commented post.
Anyway, Annie, who was the last male celebrity whose career was boosted by a sex tape. Rob Lowe? No. Scott Stapp and Kid Rock? Uh…no. Dustin Diamond? Where you been? No one thinks it’s cool. No one’s impressed by a celebrity’s power to bang some hoodrat groupie and get her to consent to film it. Most people think it’s pathetic that they have to prove something. On the other hand, female celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Pamela Anderson, publicity-wise, seemed to benefit from such tapes. And how is it sexist to comment on the girl’s looks in this situation? One of the issues at hand is whether or not it actually is Meg. Besides judging her looks, what grounds for debate do we have? To be honest, the girl in the video is a little big-boned, but who said that was a good or bad thing?
Now, in case you haven’t been paying attention, Scott reserves a hearty boner for the White Stripes. With this tape, he knows what to do with it. Even if he just reported the tape’s existence and even denied it, the people who wanted to see it would’ve found it and watched anyway. The only difference here is that a few additional readers watched it and rubbed one out before turning back around and pointing their fingers at Stereogum.
P.S. The White Stripes were and still are a very important band to me. When I was listening to nothing but Cream and Led in middle school, the Stripes broke through and were something of an indie gateway for me. Regardless, even if it were actually Meg, I wouldn’t lose any respect for her. It’s sex, people. Most people have it, some people also videotape it.
