Everything we know about this track and video by Arctic Monkeys is coming via that screengrab up there, and a tweet from Focus Creeps’ Ben Chappell of Focus Creeps, who directed the video treatment which contains a shot of a studio card bearing the following info: James Ford, Arctic Monkeys, 2/7/11. The date’s relevant because it establishes this as a distinctly new, post-Humbug track, and not one of the allegedly numerous leftovers from Humbug’s Josh Homme and James Ford helmed sessions. It also lends credence to the reports that James Ford will be producing the Monks’ forthcoming fourth LP, whenever that gets released. As for the video, it’s a fine play on the brick-by-brick motif: a record playing, and then a quick visual montage of all the steps it took to get that record on the player: California highways, bands chilling on the beach, shots of the studio, audio monitor needles hovering near the red, cigarettes, a vinyl presser, and back to the start. The sound isn’t particularly exciting, but as far as stopgap reminders that the band exists and is working on new stuff set to pretty visuals, it’ll do.

I love this a lot. New album, new sound as always for the Arctic Monkeys. But this is really awesome, can’t wait for a new album.
ok i got excited as well when i first saw this..new arctic monkeys!! but this song is terrible!! the only good thing is the few guitar parts.. everything else is so annoying!! lyrics are dumb! as usual doesnt surprise me.. new rock music these days.. suck ass!!
For some fucking weird reason this song reminds me of “It’s So Easy” by Guns N’ Roses. Am I crazy?
I’m pretty sure this is a song they just tossed off and threw out there and won’t be on the new record. Matt Helders is singing, and I doubt they’d include such a lyrical dud on an actual album based on their track record. They’ve released lots of b-sides and extras since they started. Lets wait to see what they actually tell us about it.
Not that I would want a HUMBUG part 2 but this is a step back. I feel.

straight forward rock n’ roll. i really like how they’ve kept evolving and continue to try new things. i love it
I wouldn’t really call “Straight forward rock n’ roll” an evolution.
I actually like the sound of it, it has the heaviness of “Humbug” with the aggressiveness of “Whatever People Say I Am….”. I just don’t like the lyrics so much, they’re to simplistic.

Yeah, I really liked Humbug and the direction they’re going in. I think this is a decent song and it definitely reminds me a little bit of QOTSA, but I’m hoping for more those cool n clever Alex Turner lyrics.
