Man, we wind up blogging about Swedish acts nearly as much as Canadians these days. Must be in the Baltic water, or maybe in those blessed recessive genes … and yet, it’s proving difficult to turn this thing into a Robyn fanblog, try as we might. But things definitely are picking up for Stereogum’s favorite pop princess. Aside from her recent chart success in the UK, it looks like an American (re)invasion is imminent — Robyn signed an international distribution deal with Island and is releasing the near-perfect Robyn Stateside this December. We’re gonna buy it! (Seriously.)

In the meanwhile, though, the singles keep coming from the other side of the Atlantic, and next in line is the, according to Camp Robyn, “hip hop flavoured attitude/chorus that should be heard across schoolyards for months to come” of “Handle Me,” which comes with this fuzzed-up remix by Björn Yttling (yes, that Bjorn), a man who knows his way around a studio (just ask Shout Out Louds, Taken By Trees, etc.).

We spoke a bit about how good “Handle Me” would sound if stripped as was “With Every Heartbeat” recently, but Bjorn flips it and dials up the reverb with clanging guitars at the head, a heavy-thudding beat, and low-mixed acoustic rhythm strums. Nothing on the original, but sweet for a listen.

Robyn is out now pretty much everywhere in the world but here — but that changes on 12/4. The “Handle Me” single is out 10/29 in the UK.

I think you mean ‘imminent’ – as in, coming, impending, threatening. Not ‘immanent’, which is broadly similar to ‘inherent’, ‘pervading’, etc.

Recessive genes? Does the carpet match the drapes?

  3. having not heard the album/single version yet, i’m not sure if it’s a good remix, but by itself this is a fkn cool song.
