So who took the bait and watched Anderson Cooper 360º last night to check the debut of R.E.M.’s new tune? Funny, we were busy too. And we also knew the internets would have it for us at some point today. “Until The Day Is Done” is the soundtrack for the trailer for CNN’s forthcoming special Planet In Peril, AC’s look at how the world’s going to shit — from the Amazon to the Arctic to “endangered turtles being sold in a Chinese marketplace.” Man do humans suck. As the theme music for a plea for us to change in the face of ever-decreasing biodiversity, Stipe’s grave ballad works perfectly. Tough to strip it of context (those animals are so cute! let’s save them). And you gotta love the glory shot of AC on that boat.
Also, cool interview between Anderson and Michael on the environmental crisis here.

so seriously, who buys this shit about the planet and these self-righteous artists preaching to us. Shut the fuck up!!!!!
This is the same dude who wrote the Coldplay post, isn’t it?
Please, please stop with the R.E.M. When did it happen that them completely sucking post-Green stopped being obvious to anyone with an ear? “Nightswimming” covers? Are you kidding? This is a joke, right?
Good song. This is on their next album?
Excellent track; sounds like the overproduction from some of their later albums is gone.
Not true, Paul. New Adventures in Hi-Fi was as good as anything they ever did (save maybe for Reckoning). You could argue that their albums became more inconsistent starting with Green, but “completely smoking”? Not a chance. Not when songs like “Country Feedback,” “Leave,” and “E-Bow the Letter” were post-Green.
Whoops. Make that “completely sucking.”
Fascinating how all you armchair critics can be so vicious. The guys from REM have practiced their craft with integrity, adventurousness and truth for almost 30 years, have donated huge amounts of money and time to causes they believe in, and have gone out of their way to help scores of young, up and coming musicians. What have you done with your life? If you don’t like their music, don’t buy it. And go get yourself a therapist…you have a lot of anger and self loathing that needs release in a more constructive way.
I rather hear R.E.M. (pre and post Green)than the pretentious, boring hipster crap out there.
See…I like R.E.M. AND the boring, pretentious, hipster crap. After all, there would be no boring, pretentious hipster crap if there had not been an R.E.M…..
And actually after *Monster* they started becoming inconsistent, not Green. When Bill left, he took a large chunk of the band with him. I don’t blame him for wanting to enjoy his life, but I still question whether the band should have continued without him. Some bands can live on replacing members, but I’m not so sure with this particular band.
Me likes. It’s been a while since I like a R.E.M. song.
having this “exclusive” premiere was the corniest thing CNN has done. I dig n respect REM, but the video and song together just leaves the viewer with a tangy aftertaste of smarmy morality
“so seriously, who buys this shit about the planet and these self-righteous artists preaching to us. Shut the fuck up!!!!!”
Holy shit, I didn’t know Sean Hannity posted comments on Stereogum.
Holy shit, I never knew there were so many dumb ass idiots out there…REM’s music, video, & AC360 all rock!
I love this song. It just gets better the more you hear it! The Planet in Peril doc was excellent. No preaching just plain facts as to what’s going on in the world. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t like walking around soaking up chemicals from the poison around us.
Well, I stumbled upon this track completely by accident, on the radio in England….never really took much notice of REM, and had my head in the clouds through all their hits of the past 30 years (where WAS I??)….but I love this. I love the video, and I agree with all the intelligent people who have commented positively, it IS about time this sad old species called HUMANS, took responsibilty for this amazing planet…Can one become a retrospective fan? I am intrigued enough to plumb the archives and find out about this band. This track really got to me, especially the drum beat!
