Yes, this is the year of Dark Nights (but not that kind, which is very last year). We’d told you about Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse’s ubiquitous Dark Night Of The Soul posters, and now we can point you toward a number of sounds to go with those images. (There are also additional images by Moby’s best friend David Lynch.) If you recall, the musical guest list includes Black Francis, Julian Casablancas, the Flaming Lips, James Mercer, Iggy Pop, Vic Chesnutt, Gruff Rhys, Jason Lytle, Nina Persson, Suzanne Vega, etc. What do all those folks sound like together? Well, very mellow. Like Grandaddy and the Flaming Lips hugging (until you get to the tracks sung by Casablancas and Iggy, when things shift a bit). Guess the night wasn’t all that dark. The navigation’s a bit confusing, so when you head to Chrysalis Music to hear for yourself, take a look to the left and you’ll hit paydirt. (UPDATE: No more stream, sadly.) You can see some of Lynch’s darker visuals after the jump…
Stay tuned to dnots.com for updates.

where exactly is the stream.. ?
when you click through to that page, scroll, and then look on your left and spot the area where it says “have a listen.” the button looks like a regular desktop folder, or whatever. click on that to start the stream!
That stream is dead but go to http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=104129585 – the album can be streamed in its entirety or by individual track in high quality mp3 audio.
I would have thought this would sound a bit more…ominous, experimental, unnerving, threatening. Interesting listen yet nothing I’ll be giving a deeper listen. Solid yet dissipates once the songs are done. Why did I get the feeling this will be a big hit on (blah) KCRW?
track 1 “revenge”: Flaming Lips.
track 2 “just war”: Black Francis ?
track 8 “every time I’m with you”: Jason Lytle.
track 10 “daddy’s gone”: Sparklehorse.
track 12 “Grain Augury”: Vic Chesnutt
“once we become the thing we dread
there’s no way to stop
and the more I try to stop you
the more it backfires.”
Is the stream down? I see that link where it says “Have a Listen” but there is no content in that folder.

You can hear a high-quality version of Julian’s song, “Little Girl,” here…

I think that is Wayne Coyne not James Mercer singing on track 7.
Is that just Wayne or the other lips too (like Steven Drozd) on track 1
Bah. It looks like I won’t be able to listen. Page not found.
