Brian Eno is back at the helm again for Coldplay’s followup to Viva La Vida, and the first single they’ve released since that last LP is out today. It’s certainly post-Viva in production style — it’s bright and upbeat a la “Lovers In Japan,” laced with a guitar line like the Edge but more slippery — but they still haven’t done anything about that “comma/full stop” lyric since revealing it Tuesday so, be warned:

Here’s the Peter Allen song it samples:
The band’s taking this song to the summer festivals, and is releasing the song digitally today everywhere but the UK, which must wait until 6/5.

This is cool. Sounds like all of pop radio, reformatted for my mom and her friends.
In regards to “comma/full stop”:
Awful lyrics > average lyrics < great lyrics
Shitty and memorable. Good for them.
great collaboration!
Opening sounds like Born Slippy.

Um, looks like Amrit c***-blocked your attempted “controversy.”
Also, doesn’t a “controversy” require a number of people being upset about something?
transformation process Coldplay=U2.1 complete
The Edge sounds great here
This song reminds me of “Friday friday friday”
I enjoyed “I Go To Rio” exponentially more than “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” (Blehh, by the way.)
no risk = no reward
And it sounds like this song too Ritmo de la Noche http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QMKr_EoSWI
Sounds like a mainstream band trying to go mainstream. Your already there Coldplay.
You know after the abysmal lyrics and the abysmal cover art I can’t say i didn’t see this train-wreck coming but hell this was even worse than i expected. Brian Eno signed off on this….smh
exactly – if i were in the band, the idea of gearing up to play this for the next year or so touring would bum me out
Not good, and the audio quality of the video is doing it no favors. Why did I think it would be something awesome?
wander over to Youtube and kick it up to HD, boss.
Que annoying whiny hipsters…..
Um, it’s a safe song. It’s nothing extraordinary, but it isn’t bad either. It’s decent. And decent is ok. If anything you guys should know that, you always go go gay for mediocre indie bands, now don’t you?
I love Coldplay. I love this. This is the type of single that will propel their live festival shows this summer.
Feel free to join me as I lose my mind dancing while you stiffly stand analyzing production values of the King of Limbs.
Clearly, this aesthetic isn’t for everyone. Coldplay is a pop band making pop music. But if you’re satisfied with not giving so much of a damn, this song is everything you’d want. This song is another success. Can’t wait.
i liked the king of limbs. and i love dancing. but i could never see my self dancing to this song, at a festival or whatever. why? ’cause its insufferably boring. i can think of plenty more radio pop songs i’d much rather cut a rug to. give me some janelle monae or something.
this would be a much more appropriate “go take a piss and buy another 12 dollar beer” song.
Well It’s kind of the worst of Viva La Vida… but the real issue with this song is an awful rip off… but really awful…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QMKr_EoSWI&feature=player_embedded
there it is the original song…
bro, it’s a song made up of two really common two-chord progressions. you don’t have to dig up obscure spanish pop music (or browse other folks blogs) to find it all over the place. at the end of the day, on some level, calling a pop song a ripoff is like calling a pop song a pop song. it’s just part of the game.
i have a feeling they were all geeking out to a Peter Allen record for lunch, went into rehearsal and goofed off with the chords. Five minutes later “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” was born. So they give Peter Allen some credit, simultaneously covering their asses, and shine a little spotlight on an obscure record that they dig.
Pretty much what everyone expected. David Byrne had a great (long) blog post and a TED talk (http://www.ted.com/talks/view/lang/eng//id/883) about music venues shaping the sounds of bands and composers throughout history. Clearly Coldplay are all about writing some feelgood anthems to redeem the grass seats of amphitheaters and nosebleeds of arenas, and they follow a really safe and common model, ie The U2 Plan. Not much reward or excitement or pushing music along, just a safe buy that sells a lot of records.
Although in full disclosure, I own most of their records, pull one out maybe once a year, and it feels pretty damn good. They’re nothing if not consistent, and never ‘QUITE’ do it the same way twice. If more pop music sounded like Coldplay, I’d venture the dial away from news radio a little more often – but I wouldn’t be missing much if I didn’t. Once a year is great for me.
It disturbs me that the new Animal Collective material that premiered two months ago got more flak and immature comments than a new Coldplay single.
That said, the only truly offensive parts of the song are its heavy repetition and its name. Out of all the junk that plays through my store’s speakers when I do my part-time work, Coldplay produces the most tolerably bubblegum and for that I thank them.
This song isn’t awful, nor great. The cover art I actually like, because the colors reflect what I see when I hear the song…so for that, +1. However, the song itself…just sort of happens? It so desperately wants to be a terrace anthem but the melody really isn’t strong or soaring enough for that…
I actually think this song might have been better as a little piano ditty, but Coldplay don’t really do that anymore. It sounds just different enough to be interesting, but sadly it’s a pretty average song. And I say this as someone who enjoys their music for the most part, and thought Viva la Vida was one of the best songs of 2008. I’m sure I’ll enjoy some music off of their new album, but this is pretty unmemorable.
You guys should hear how many songs Girl Talk plagiarizes! I don’t think he even plays his own instruments, he just copies the songs! Just a theory though.
But seriously, do people have their dumb-hats on today? Not only do Coldplay themselves acknowledge that they SAMPLED a song, but Stereogum has it in the article, right up there, ready to read. Just scroll up and read.
Song is meh.
This just in: a song with two chords and a Latin rhythm sounds a bit like other songs with two chords and a Latin rhythm.
I swear, people aren’t even TRYING.
this is not the first single since the last LP, there was an EP with at least one single right?
Hmmmmm, sounds sort of like Coldplay.
They obviously have talent, why don’t they use it?
I did play whigfields saturday Night at same time… sounds shockingly similar, try it lol..
Still like this Coldplay song though, its refreshing
Strange, I liked it.
It’s just Coldplay being Coldplay, that’s all.
This song is being played on the radio ad nauseam. Total wallpaper. Whenever it comes on I forget I’m even listening to anything.
Just the kick drum for percussion eh? I honestly didnt see that coming…
They sampled from “ritmo de la noche”, im an average amercian teenager and even i know this is a total ripoff. that “obscure latin beat” is spain’s most favorite dance track. I really love coldplay, i just cant believe they’re going to take all the credit and it’ll be all over the radio.
You realize “Ritmo De La Noche” borrowed from and was based on “I Go To Rio”, and that Coldplay have given both writers of that song credit for collaborative co-writing credits for the song and have been pretty open about it, right? I guess just don’t know what else people want them to do. http://www.digitalspy.com/music/news/a323139/coldplay-respond-to-teardrop-copy-claims.html
Well of course i knew! Its on the article! But “i go to rio” was at least sampled into what holds a different genre of 90′s dance scene. I find it annoying Coldplay’s song is like the exact same structure as “Ritmo de la Noche”. Its been done. It’s been wittingly sampled into a dance track and it doesn’t need to happen again. It would be like if someone sampled daft punk’s “harder better faster stronger” into another rap single.
I guess ill let the rest of the world decide.
In terms of the music (although not the lyrics), this sounds like one of those cloying inspirational jingles for a credit union commercial.
I can’t believe people are supporting this shit because it sounds less shit than they’re perceivably allowed to get….for a ‘once a year band so it’s a okay they’re mediocre’ they do get a disproportionate amount of attention.
Chris martin must be reading some of these comments going ‘fuck yeah its actually fineto make this ostensibly vacuous music as long as people feel we do it ‘well’ and ‘sustainably’ and ‘okayish’ and ‘fine’ and ‘will do for pop radio’ and ‘will do for once in a while so lets fuel their heavily commercialized mawkish stadium pandering even more’
I assure you, there are plenty of haters out there.
I agree with the sentiment that it’s just Coldplay doing Coldplay. Look, I loved Coldplay during the Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to The Blood years. But this is just ridiculous now. There’s nothing remotely intelligent/interesting/hell even that catchy about this BS. Chris Martin seriously needs to get over his stupid complex of needing everyone to like him. IT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. But what a way to be remembered for making mediocre music every few years. Brian Eno is clearly not going to save you this time. And while Byrne’s speech about bands making music for big venues is clearly relevant here, why it can’t be like bands make music that a ton of people happen to like? I don’t think Radiohead makes music for amphitheaters or whatever, but a shit ton of people will always show up and love it. You don’t have to sell your soul to make “big” music.
yeah. i’m with you. I think byrne’s speech is fascinating, but I don’t think venue justifies mediocrity in any way. And really he’s actually arguing the opposite, that artists adapt, use venue as an instrument, and use it to further their art (and Radiohead absolutely does) and I haven’t seen that happen here outside of swinging lightbulbs around and around and around.
Coldplay have been imitators from the start, and they’ve been really open about that, from Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, Kraftwerk and U2, Peter Allen and Spanish Dance. But at this point it’s like they are imitating themselves and becoming caricatures of Coldplay – when I don’t think they ever really found their identity to start with (partly because they got really popular really fast). it’s kind of a big bummer and feels like watching an orphan go through puberty in front of millions of clapping people…
anyways, best case scenario they just dumped out this “Summer Blockbuster” single and it has nothing to do with their next album or musical direction. either way, I think most people have given up on Coldplay putting out something mindblowing and important, I think Coldplay have kind of given up on that too…
Well Said!
Also, why can’t we have this many comments about the new Beirut Single? It’s freaking awesome.
Since i’ve heard it I think i’ve played more than 20 times. I’m not a coldplay fan but i like this song. Thanks from iTunes Plus
check this out and enjoy

I must be the only person to find Coldplay bland and safe. Music for Mother’s Day.
Nah, you just didn’t read any of the comments.
This is coming from a former Coldplay fan…this song is terrible especially the lyrics. What happened Martin? The thing is I’ll probably still give the new album a listen but I’ll stick with new Antlers and Bon Iver for now.
