Candy Butcher Mike Viola name drops J.D. Salinger and snaps like a member of the Addams Family on “Girly Worm,” a tune that also reminds us of Randy Newman in its soft, scratchy sing-a-long qualities. It’s from his new 13-song solo album, Lurch, so let’s assume the Addams thing isn’t random. The Newman? You be the judge.

Mmm, bananafish. Viola does have an affinity for the moving image: He wrote 10 songs for Walk Hard, the John C. Reilly spoof we’ve mentioned a couple times. Lurch is out soon in a limited-edition of 1,000 available exclusively via Mike’s site. The Walk Hard soundtrack is out 12/4. Viola starts a month-long residency at Joe’s Pub in February. Walk Hard premieres on pay cable sometime after that, and that’s probably when we’ll see it.

This is awesome! I can’t wait for the next CButchers
sounds like john mayer on awesomeness
I’m so hip I only like bands that haven’t formed yet!
I love The Candy Butches and all ove Mike’s music. I became I fan when I heard That Thing You Do in which he sings and became a fan of his own stuff. I gotta get me the new album.
such an inspiring songwriter and all around awesome guy…plus, i love the new song…so: yay all around 4 mike!
This sucks worse than J.D. Salinger.
Hang On Mike is one of the very best trad. pop-rock albums of the past 8,10, 15 years.
I’ll take it a bit further and say he’s the best songwriter of his generation. F-in Superkid. He was playing gigs when John Mayer was just a glimmer in his father’s eye.
Yes, a pop genius, which is a tough thing to say these days. It’s easier to say things like–oh, I don’t know–like “Salinger sucks”, which, true or not, is wicked hip to say, dontcha think?
