Yesterday I mentioned the movie Wicker Park. IMDB describes the plot: “A young Chicago investment banker (Josh Hartnett) believes a woman he sees in a cafe is his long-lost love. His conviction leads to obsession, as he puts his life on hold to trail her.” You can watch the trailer here. Can’t say I’m gonna see the flick, but this soundtrack looks promising:

Lakeshore Records VP tells Modernrock.com:

The film is an obsessive love story, and the soundtrack absolutely captures that feeling ? when you listen to it, you?re completely immersed in this very personal, wanting place.

It is truly an alignment of the stars to have the theme from a movie about obsessive love from 20 years ago [1984's "Against All Odds"] ? that also happened to be a #1 hit and is The Postal Service’s first soundtrack contribution ? on this record. When I reached out to the band’s label about getting something from them for Wicker Park, they said, “We have this non-album track; it’s a cover of a pop song called ‘Against All Odds.’” I was floored. I said, “You?ve got to be kidding.” For me, personally, that?s the crown jewel of this album.

The [Pretty In Pink soundtrack] just captured the cultural zeitgeist of a musical moment. Wicker Park does the same thing in much the same way. It?s Pretty In Pink for this generation

Um, if you say so label dude. Anyway “Against All Odds” will in fact be the first single.

Enjoy:

  1. that does look like a sweet soundtrack. i love concrete blonde and johnette’s voice, so a coldplay cover might be rather awesome. looks like the producers are taking hints from the O.C. and getting good bands for soundtrack music.

  2. I just knew that one day they’d bring out a “Pretty in Pink” soundtrack for the next generation. And I just knew that it would have a Phil Collins cover on it.

this is an insanely good cover song. i approve.

  4. you know i’ll be buying that – thanks for the tip.

  5. Can we think of other awesome soundtracks to (potentially) bad movies?

[nerd out] In case folks were curious, that postal service track originally came out two years ago on a free 7″ that came bundled with Devil in the Woods magazine. The A-side was a live version of Coldplay singing Clocks. Devil in the Woods is also a record label. Pedro the Lion is on there. [/nerd out]

As far as fantastic soundtracks, I think Wes Andersons movies have done an amazing job. Of course those movies dont suck, but still such an artful job was done on the soundtracks I think they deserve a nod…

  7. I dunno if this movie is going to suck. I saw the trailer when I went to see Anchorman and I said to my girlfriend, “I’d go see that.”

Of course the opened mouth gawk she gave me in response might be an indicator that I’m the odd man out.

  8. Awesome thread Mark: Great soundtracks to bad movies…

THE JACKAL comes to mind. I really love that album. I should post the BT/Richard Butler track at some point. Also Black Grape’s “Get Higher” is fun — takes a Nancy and Ronald Reagan speech and cuts it up to make it pro-drugs. Also has got a great Primal Scream song.

  9. I should mention, though, that I never saw THE JACKAL. I just heard it sucked.

  10. i just watched the trailer for that movie and it looked NOTHING like pretty in pink. Like, not even a little.

  11. scott, you fucking rock. that song just made my weekend.

  12. long face steve  |   Posted on Jul 22nd, 2004

i LOVE the postal service!!! *thanks*

  13. Lazlo Hollyfeld  |   Posted on Jul 22nd, 2004

    It doesn’t look like Pretty In Pink, nor should it…since it’s a self-admitted remake of 1996′s L’Appartement:

    http://imdb.com/title/tt0115561/

  14. I want this soundtrack!! Wow–haven’t heard Johnette Napolitano’s name in forever. That should be a good re-make.

Anyone remember the “So I Married An Axe Murderer” soundtrack?

  15. When I heard the title, I thought it was going to include cameo appearences by members of the Chicago Real World, who resided in Wicker Park during their time here…also, they NEVER LEFT the house…EVER!

  16. Wicker Park = Greenwich Village of Chicago? Some say durst.

  17. when I saw the Postal Service perform, they did this track as an encore with clips from the original movie it appeared in playing behind them. it was so delightfully meta and post-modern, in a playful and unpretentious way. i’d imagine we can’t expect quite that much wit from the Wicker Park but maybe i’m just saying that because Josh Hartnett’s in it.

  18. I LOVE how the end of this version sounds like Boards Of Canada.

  19. I really dig the PS version of this song (in all it’s Timbaland-esque glory). I think this could be a big breakout for Gibby and the head of Dntel ops. I also predict a massively ironic resugence of Phil Collins popularity (2nd wave, post-American Psycho… of course).

  20. As a Chicago resident, I must say that I will not be seeing that movie. It looks like it sucks of the ass. Wicker Park was great 10, 15 years ago. Once the “Real World” cast and an “authentic” Irish Pub donning a british flag moved in, it has been downhill ever since.

The soundtrack, on the other hand, looks good.

I’ve seen the french movie on which this movie is based on “L’Appartement” and that movie is fantastic. It stars Vincent Cassel (Brotherhood of the Wolves) and Monica Bellucci (Matrix 2). They’re both fabulous actors so it’s going to be hard to do justice to the original. But the soundtrack sounds really great. I’m especially looking forward the The Still’s “Retour a Vega “.

Did everyone watch that trailer? Not to diss on the Chicago park, called Wicker Park, but no one in their right mind would meet there in the middle of winter with snow on the ground. It is too cold for that. The lure of completely trendy (warm) restaurants within eye shot would be too strong; stronger than love or obsession. Suspension of disbelief…not there.

The soundtrack rocks and so does the movie! Watched it last night. A modern love story makes you wish you had a love like theirs in your life.

The record is awesome! Whats your favorite song on it?

Does anyone know anything about the bank on track #12? +/-? Can’t find any info on them.

  31. I was a little iffy about this song at first but after playing over 30 times, I love it to death.

  32. steve  |   Posted on Oct 9th, 2004

OMG, it was great that blonde was sooo hot

  33. I loved the movie, being from canada I find winter a very romantic time of the year, if the movie would of been made in the summer it would of killed the whole sensual part of the movie, make it look like another typical love story. I can’t wait to hear the soundtrack too, it looks really good

  34. Bigboy  |   Posted on Nov 6th, 2004

What was the last song in the movie where they were crying to eachother called??????????/

  37. adit  |   Posted on Nov 24th, 2004

when i heard “we have a map of a piano”-mum and “i know you are but what am i ?”-mogwai in the movie, i was pshyched and that what makes this movie so beautiful. i know it won’t be perfect without those bands.

  38. sonia  |   Posted on Nov 26th, 2004

yeah, soundtrack is really good but i have one question. have you watched the trailer? what`s the title of the song which begins the trailer? the song is great but, unfortunetly, isn`t on this soundtrack.

    Artist: Jaime Wyatt Lyrics
    Song: Light Switch Lyrics

A rare occasion when you come on the phone
    It’s like a holiday I celebrate alone
Remember every detail when you spoke
The way my name drags across your throat

You’ve been a burden all at once
Sometimes I can’t find the light switch
Sometimes I’d rather dwell in the darkness
    Sometimes I’m better off alone
    Sometimes has become a home

Well you don’t want me and i should have known
My heart can’t seem to let you go
You’re not so special, you’re not even close
You mean the least but you take the most

You’ve been a burden all at once
Sometimes I can’t find the light switch
Sometimes I’d rather dwell in the darkness
    Sometimes I’m better off alone
    Sometimes has become a home

I hear your words so sweet, secure and flattering
I stare into the sea, as your waves crash over me
    Almost upon the shore
    Your words don’t flatter anymore

Sometimes I can’t find the light switch
Sometimes I’d rather dwell in the darkness
    Sometimes I’m better off alone
    Sometimes has become a home

i dont know about you guys but this movie rocked man. IT’S SO SAD!! and the soundtrack is even better. i have two that i like the best: Strange and Beautiful by Aqualung, and Nobody said it was Easy by Cold Play. and yea, the song at the end is the one by Cold Play. i cried too! and Josh Hartnett is hott man! anyone of you guys who think this movie sucks is WHACK!!!

  57. pete  |   Posted on Apr 11th, 2005

The Coldplay song you are all referring to is called “The Scientist” not “Nobody said it was easy” – just in case you’re trying to track it down.
It’s on their second album “Rush Of Blood To The Head”
And by the way the film and soundtrack are top class!!

Also check out the Aqualung Album – think its just called “Aqualung” – beautiful album…
