Fresh off of playing for the young folks at Sasquatch! (and also the old folks at Breakfast At Sulimay’s), Doves landed in 30 Rock last night for a taping of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. The song choice was “The Outsiders,” seemingly the only Kingdom Of Rust song that wasn’t posted here in advance of the album’s release. In case you never got your album stream on, try it live with the benefit of Jimmy’s solid sound crew and some dramatic lighting:
Kingdom Of Rust is out.

FUCK YES!
great band. but. their drummer is a spastic garbage face.
Great song. Awesome bad. Saw them in Chicago last week and they were stellar. I don’t get how Doves aren’t huge everywhere but I should be glad I get to see them in small places still.
i’d like to thank Apple, Bud Light Lime, and Sharp.
But seriously Richmond, that performance was nice and the mix was great.
Doves. F-yeah!
@la la landon That’s just fuckin’ rock ‘n roll. Really great stuff here. That mix was perfect, and an absolute perfect band.
he is the furthest thing from rock and roll.
the rest of the band and their records however. are a different story.
I’m with la la landon, in that the drums are all wrong. They sound flat and they’re too loud in the mix. It was distracting to the point where I couldn’t enjoy what would’ve been a great song.
Doves are awesome! Great band, great songs, great records. I think they are really underrated, but that’s okay, let’s keep it that way.
How odd. He plays his bass upside down. It’s not just a lefty, it’s flipped around.
yeah that blows my mind also
Sonic Youth criticized the “Radiohead model” on Pitchfork yet Stereogum has still posted nothing about it. You can damn well bet if it was Billy Corgan or Robert Smith who had said it they’d have posted it by now and everyone would be going shitless and saying how much their respective bands suck compared to teh Almighty Radioheadz.
O RLY
Amazed by the sound coming off my speakers as I listen to this.
This performance is different from the Doves show I saw in Philly last night. There is no douchebag from Jersey standing in front of the Fallon’s camera constantly shouting “Wooooooooooo! This song is on the fourth record! YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH! Look at my cellphone, it’s like a lighter! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! YEEEEEAAAHHHHH!!!!”
Man, great show at the Troc in Philly last night! Amazing live show…even tho this asshole behind me kept mumbling and bumping into me while I was cheering the band and trying to take fuzzy pictures with my cell phone…YYYYEEEEEEAAAAAHHHH, DDDOOOOOVVVEEEESSSSS!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
More great stuff from a band that has been pretty awesome since their inception.
Great band, I really dig thier sound!
so I was an abusive boyfriend for the last year and a half. my girlfriend left me and she told me the only way to get her back was to treat her nice. thats when i took her to dollar oysters. those shits was impeccable. she thought otherwise. next thing i knew i was beating her in front of the whole restaurant and there i was again back to my old tricks.
You guys should start using links to youtube or something, Hulu doesn’t allow anyone outside of the usa to view videos.
Really Great. Thanks
funny someone else commented about the poor drumming. I saw them recently in Minneapolis and my brother (who is a drummer) commented on how inconsistent the tempo was. For a drummer in a band like this, you would expect better. Even this version feels a bit rushed. That big bass riff should groove a little more instead of having to be tossed off. So yeah, great songs but they would be a better live band with a better drummer and one more good singer (who possibly could play guitar and keys – not apparent so much here but on live versions of many of their other songs, it is clear this would help a bit).
They plowed through “Snowden” on Friday night as well. Way too fast. The tempo was ok until the drums came in and then the rest of the band was forced to speed up to accommodate the drummer coming in so fast. The rest of the group was fine.
Agreeance, I’ve never understood why a band like Coldplay takes off while a superior band like Doves just sort of levels off. I guess you’ve just gotta have that one smash out hit, early, and the rest just falls into place.
The only thing I thought about this video (other than how great this band is and how smart Jez looks in his cap) is that drums were downright tinny. Too sharp and bashing or something. But hey, love those Doves. Loved being able to see all 3 of their southern California shows, loved chatting with them afterwards, loved seeing the California crowd eat them up, and I can’t wait til they bring their righteous music back to us.

Doves are a great band and may “do an Elbow” over here in the UK this year. Hope they don’t get too big though! As for the drumming: they are all multi instrumentalists rather than sticking to one instrument, the studio sound doesn’t help and bands do tend to play quicker live (those of us around the Manchester scene know this). Hope the US embrace Doves, oh and please stop The Killers releasing their records over here.
Totally agree with Whitey, man Doves are so awesome right now! Been visiting Europe and have heard this record is some of the top indie bars and clubs.
