maybe i missed it, but no mark morrison “return of the mack,” or “crossroads,” by bone thugs, or any a tribe called quest song. i wouldn’t mind seeing westside connection’s the gangsta, the killa, and the dope dealer, or some dj quik: maybe, “tonite.” no bad religion or offspring?? i could understand if it was social d or suicidal tendencies, but offspring was as mainstream punk as it got, and “infected” was played every hour in 94-95.

Well, the 90s was great while it lasted, even the cheesy pop songs are tolerable cos at the very least it’s melodic and catchy.

Now everything that’s playing on radio, MTV or VH1 are either soft porn-ish, emo or antagonistic… Damn the 21th century!

  4. debra  |   Posted on Dec 24th, 2008

what the f how has no one mentioned LET ME CLEAR MY THROAT by DJ KOOL?!

and I agree, this list has some serious deficiencies, but it’s a pretty solid starting point if you’re looking to throw a 90s party (irony, indie kids?). yeah, they’re definitely not the best musically, but I’m not ashamed to admit that I still know all the words to most of these songs. they have a lot of heartstring value for a lot of people, and that doesn’t make them not worth listening to.

radiohead clearly has better songs than creep; as most people pointed out, a lot of bands listed have much better songs than the ones that made the cut. and yes, the smashing pumpkins and blind melon truly deserve spots on the list– an egregious oversight. but if you were young and impressionable during this era in history, you’ve gotta have a soft spot for the ones that vh1 deemed fit to put in their voting options (even if it’s because aside from your parents’ and siblings’ music you didn’t know any better).

other people you liked in middle school: smash mouth, eiffel 65, nelly, the bloodhound gang, LFO (summer girls is amazing, I will never think otherwise), no doubt, fatboy slim, gorillaz… the list is exhaustive. and YES to those people who mentioned janet jackson and blink 182. also, anything you can roller skate to is a go.

    keep adding to the list!

  5. This is a list that has HANSON at #20 for the best song in a ten year period. ARE YOU SERIOUS? This list is void because someone hacked in made it suck. OR the people who came up with the list should be killed. simple

    • oooooouuuuuuuuuuu did you just say people should be killed i can call the police on you for threating the public and for horrible taste in music

  6. Lilmarie  |   Posted on Jan 20th, 2009

  7. I’d like to have seen these songs make the list. They really take me back in time.

Ace of Base – The Sign
    4 Non Blondes – What’s Up?
    Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
    Wreckz-N-Effect – Rump Shaker
    UB40 – Can’t Help Falling In Love
    Coolio – Gangsta’s Paradise
Guns N’ Roses – November Rain
    Luniz – I Got 5 On It
Jodeci – Come & Talk To Me
Bryan Adams – (Everything I Do) I Do It For You
    All-4-One – I Swear
Seal – Kiss From A Rose

Public Enemy shouldnt be on this list…….and too much grunge rock…not enough hip hop/rap…..it did dominate th 90′s

i make a case for the following

    R-Kelly:i believe i can fly
    Aerosmith:dont wanna close my eyes
Rage Against The Machine: you decide
    Coolio:Gangsters Paradise
    The Macarena
    Brian Adams: Everything i do
    DMX:party up…..between the millenuim merger…arguably the best period between 2000′s and 90′s..
    Haddaway:what is love
    Kc and Jojo:all my life
    Mob Deep:half way crooks
    Pantera:Cowboys from hell or Walk
    White Zombie: ThunderKiss 65
Andrea Bocelli: Con Te Partiro..With you I will leave

    • yeah well what can you do about it its already been made and this list was made from people who voted these you wanna know why those werent on the list CUZ THEY SUCKED

  9. I don’t think the initial list was as high as 300- the 1980s’ one was like 125-130, from what I remember.

Anyhow, “Macarena” was on the initial list of nominees. A great number of the 100 songs actually have received acclaim (www.acclaimedmusic.net).

  10. r mOODY  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2009

hOW COULD MACARENA NOT MAKE THE LIST THAT MAKES NO SENSE ITS AN INTERNATIONAL HIT. it was very popular even in politics.Apart from that the list is ok could be better but not bad.

  11. lilkunta  |   Posted on May 16th, 2009

    This list isnt good.
    Top 5 should include
    -WH’s Always Love You
    -MC’s Always Be My Baby
-Boys 2 Men End Of The Road.

  12. Faye  |   Posted on May 16th, 2009

Eve 6′s “Inside Out” Should have been on this list.

  13. matt  |   Posted on Jun 19th, 2009

smashing pumpkins?…come on!…..Rage against the machine?…not even on the list..BULLS ON PARADE should be in the top 10 at least.

  14. palermo  |   Posted on Jul 4th, 2009

Not a single Guns N Roses, Aerosmith or Boys 2 Men song they should do the list again that one is clearly a joke i was expecting to c November Rain at least in the top twenty.

  15. ALEXA  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2009

WHERE THE FUCK IS THE SMASHING PUMPKINS!!!

  16. orangey  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2009

They seemed to pick a lot of one hit wonders instead of bands that actually defined the sounds of the 90s (and who also had big songs). This list also focuses on the latter half of the decade (too much TRL crap).

The following are just a few glaring omissions that Colour Me Badd and Meredith Brooks should’ve been knocked off for:

    No Doubt – Don’t Speak (ska had a big 90s comeback….)
The Brian Setzer Orchestra – Jump, Jive & Wail (90s swing revival)
Smashing Pumpkins – Bullet With Butterfly Wings
Stone Temple Pilots – Wicked Garden
The Cure – Friday I’m In Love
Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the name of
    Blind Melon – No Rain
Probably should also have a Moby or Fatboy Slim song (raves anyone? huge 90s trend)
    Garbage – Special

I could go on…..and yeah, I actually agree that the Macrena should be on there. To be fair, it was a pretty huge cultural phenomenon.

  17. Jason  |   Posted on Sep 10th, 2009

More like the songs everyone knew in the 90′s. The only people I knew who actually liked more than, say, 25% of these songs were total cheese balls. I was very into music during the ’90′s and I have tons of 90′s music, but only own 11 of the songs on this list. The worthwhile stuff was in the underground. The 90′s were great if you didn’t follow the charts. Have to say, 90′s pop music was some of the worst ever.

  18. Trevor  |   Posted on Oct 25th, 2009

Matchbox 20 should be dominating this list they are the best band to come out of the 90′s. And Smooth by Santana & Rob Thomas should be #1!!

  19. edmister11  |   Posted on Nov 13th, 2009

    everyone’s a critic

  20. Pissed Off  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2009

Vh1 you suck balls big time. How can there be no Smashing Pumpkins, they were the best and most talented band of the 90′s

  21. delacruztaylor  |   Posted on Dec 10th, 2009

I grew up in the 90′s, I can’t remeber the pavement band, or not sure I even heard of them, thats why they didn’t make the list.

  22. StevenMountaineer  |   Posted on Dec 25th, 2009

SMASHING PUMPKINS?!?!?!?!!!!! WTF??????????????? STONE TEMPLE PILOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Also:
Boyz II Men – I’m not even a fan, but those guys were talented as hell and HUUUUGGGEEE!!!!
I was also expecting to see Guns N Roses – November Rain; Bone Thugs – Crossroads; Sublime!!!!

Oh my god.. No Smashing Pumpkins just PISSES ME OFF

  23. blueneptune18  |   Posted on Jan 8th, 2010

so the artist of the 90′s decade and the artist of the millenium, and who has procured 15 #1′s great songs has No SONGS here…SHIT LIST.

  24. Dougrad  |   Posted on Jan 21st, 2010

The problem with this list is that it includes too many songs from the 90′s that are currently novelty songs (either ones that were intended or became novelty because of time), and too many songs that sound terribly dated, y’know, ones that just “scream 90s.” Vh1′s Best of the 80′s list was good because it primarily included songs that still sound good today, and ones you wouldn’t be embarrased to have people catch you listening to in 2010. And you know they could have really screwed up that 80′s list as well, with all the bad music from that decade. But really, you won’t find too many people still listening to lot of the Top 30 artists on this 90′s list, which includes MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Hanson, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, N’Sync, Spice Girls, Sir-Mix-A-Lot, etc. The list should be called “Vh1′s most popular songs of the 90s,” not “The Greatest.” There also should have been more alternative rock (most of which from the 90′s still sounds pretty good today) and less disposable pop on this list.

  25. Nate  |   Posted on Jan 22nd, 2010

Where the heck are the Dave Matthews Band songs?

  26. No “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum…..that song was one of the most popular songs for 2 fuckin’ years!! Gimme a break. And I love Pearl Jam, but to put “Jeremy” ahead of “Black” or “Yellow Bedletter”??? Do some homework….

  27. hanson beat beck!?!?!?
