Writer/director/actor Zach Braff explains his indie-rock picks for the Garden State soundtrack in the new Spin:

“New Slang,” the Shins
“That song was on Scrubs — I heard it and was like, ‘This is the greatest song ever.’ I thought it was really romantic for her to pass these big headphones to him. It was like an umbilical cord, like she was plugging him into her world.”

The film opens tonight in NY and LA. You can read Zach’s blog here. (link via Nick/Laura Slash Temp.)

this is my favorite movie and i haven’t even seen it yet.

  3. I dunno whether to diss him for including Zero 7 and Remy Zero or to kiss him for being unhip enough to include that kick-ass Simon & Garfunkel song.

  4. Also, my friend, LA Movie Guy, says that advance word on Garden State is that it really ain’t good at all. Strictly Film School. Self-consciously arty. Not funny. Advance webzine reviews back him up. But I dunno. LA Movie Guy’s been wrong before and you know webzines can’t be trusted. I’m just saying, don’t go in with high hopes.

Hell, I’m seeing it just ’cause Nat Portman’s in it. The rest don’t matter.

  5. If I were Zach Braff and I wrote and directed by own movie and I had a chance to cast Nat Portman as my love interest, I was thinking that I’d totally pull a Brown Bunny. Or at least try to.

    Brown Bunny… ?

Wait, is that just another way to say “In Da Butt” ?

  7. Brown Bunny was a Vincent Gallo film. Fellatio was involved. Naturally, Gallo cast himself as the fellated. The fellator? Chloe Sevigny.

i love “new slang”, it’s on my 25th most played list on itunes.

the garden state trailer really appealed to me. having said that, i am quite sure the film sucks. it seems too deliberately quirky…

here are some clips from the film:

  10. I saw it. And it sucked. But, yeah, the soundtrack’s good. It’s got “The Only Living Boy in New York.” Seriously, I love that song.

firstly, tim- you suck. the movie was great.

and i loveee new slang. it is definetely the best song, next to the only living boy in new york on the upcoming album. simon and garfunkel are timeless, and it is very apparent

  15. apparently you drank the KOOL AID. can anyone say HYPE?!? total let down. humor is deliberate and forced. zach braff just barfed his ego all over us…soundtrack is decent though…
