Plenty of smiles, beer sipping, and clowning in the live footage that makes up Against Me!’s “New Wave” video. Why not? The little punks turned major label biggies have a lot to celebrate: The Boss digs ‘em, they took the top spot in Spin‘s year ending list, no. 9 on Rolling Stone‘s shit list, and Ben Lee covered New Wave in its entirety. Right, maybe that Ben thing wasn’t the biggest deal.

Seems like a label promo. They did one for “White People For Peace,” too. Still, more compelling than wine-y “Thrash Unreal.” The footage comes from their tour with Sage Francis, though we don’t see that many backpacks in the audience (rimshot). Speaking of live: On 1/16, dudes go out on tour with Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World and Serj Tankian. Jimmy Eat World? Anyhow, wonder if they’ll call Tegan in when they do the video for “Borne on the FM Waves Of The Heart.” While we wait, here’s Tegan in the studio with the boys adding her vocals to the track.

  1. Let the hateful “they sold out!” comments commence!

  2. Followed up by the equally unimportant retorts claiming the band to still be ‘keeping it real.’ Music is music, and unless if it is made as a commodity to sell, it’s unfair to suggest that the band is some how at fault. Might not like the band so much, might think Spin are idiots for calling it the best album of the year…but I don’t think that the band has ‘sold out’…maaaaaan.

Is the new stuff really that much different than the old stuff? Sounds the same to me. They are still the same band. I think they got robbed out of the best live band gummy award. When I saw them live, I grew a beard.

  4. they may not have sold out, but they have yet to make an album that has more then a few great songs.

I may be in the minority, but this was one of my favorite records of the year. The songs are well written catchy rock / pop whatever tunes. Blah blah blah blah…pointless debating…

you guys can take your Arcade Fire. AM! have conistantly been the best live band out there for the past five years.

  7. I thought this album was pretty good; good enough to make my top ten for ’07. I had never heard of Against Me! before this album, and I could care less if Ben Lee covered the whole album. This is just a good album, with good songs period.

I was getting sick of Thrash Unreal on radio though, so I am glad they are playing New Wave now lol.

“Is the new stuff really that much different than the old stuff?”
The new stuff is waaaayyy different from the old stuff!
Have you even heard Reinventing Axl Rose, it’s one of my favourite albums, same with As the Eternal Cowboy. The new album and Searching for a Former Clarity don’t even compare to those two. The new songs lack the emotion of the old ones. I don’t feel anything when listening to New Wave except disappointment.

They are still a great live band though. I remember seeing them at a place called the Trasheteria in Guelph, ON and it was one of the best shows I have ever been to. It’s a really small venue, no more than 200 people, and this show was no where near sold out. It was great. I can’t really bring myself to see them again though, I have seen them about three or four times since then but not since they sort of blew up. It would just take away from the old experience.

And as much as I don’t like the new stuff I would and could never compare any band that i used to love, and still love the old stuff, to nickleback…that’s just too harsh, no one deserves that terrible comparison

  11. I thought only SPIN liked this band.
