We took last month off from our Monthly Mix series in favor of our midterm flashback/annual summer jams compilation Cruel Summer, which you should grab if you haven’t. But it is a new month — the last one of Summer 2011 — so here’s a filtered recap of the month’s finest free MP3s. Use it to soundtrack your final rooftop parties, your last picnics, the season’s closing bike rides (though not in NYC you will get a ticket for that shit). M83 to Neon Indian, Drake to Inc., elite gymnastics to Girls, the Rapture, Youth Lagoon. More. It’s here for you:

I’m pretty sure it’s cruel and unusual for m83 to release something as amazing as Midnight City and then make us wait months for the rest of the record.
It would only be cruel if he was releasing a single LP instead of a double.
Thankfully the hard and painful waiting will pay off with 22 m83 tracks. I’m comforted with that.
Also The Field announced a new album for release in October!?!?! Where did that one come from? Awesome.
Putting a song called “July” in an August mix? How… ironic.

Absolutely loving Romantic Streams in particular. Fantastic mix as a whole too.
This is my favorite Monthly mix ever.
I have many memories from listening to this mix during the end of an epic summer..
