The Shins have a new lineup, a new label (Columbia imprint Aural Apothecary), and a handful of new tunes that will appear on the band’s long awaited, Greg Kurstin-produced fourth LP, due next year. Currently backing James Mercer on the road are Richard Swift, Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse), Yuuki Matthews (Crystal Skulls), and Jessica Dobson. Eugene, Oregon’s W.O.W. Hall got the first look and listen to this lineup earlier this week and were treated to an encore of David Bowie’s “Ashes To Ashes.” Last night at the Domno Room in Bend, the band reprised the cover and revisited a woozy ballad James debuted on a recent solo tour. Isn’t this like, The Shins 5.0 at this point?
Either way, “Ashes To Ashes” is one of my favorite Bowie songs, so, nice.
And the new song is great. Glad they’re keeping it simple.
New song is drastically different that Wincing. Unless it’s a grower, it’s slow and boring.
But most of Wincing was drastically different than what they’d done before…okay, not drastic, but still. I think Broken Bells allowed him to get the new-wave stuff out of his system and get back to what he does best. Hopefully I’m not speaking too soon. I like the back-to-basics feel, though.
this isn’t a “new” new song… it’s just a band version of that acoustic song that we heard a couple months back… sounds good though.

When I heard that the Shins lost two of their band members, in favor of, like three new ones, I feared for the worst. That never means that the music gets better. This new (to me) song does nothing to refute that.
