There’s a new set of Girls material to rave about. Father, Son, Holy Ghost comes on the heels of the excellent Broken Dreams Club and the hailed debut LP Album, and today’s talks about its beauty isn’t surprising in the wake of “Vomit.” Chris Owens continues traipsing toward an earned seat at the table of America’s finest working songwriters, grafting his tracks with vulnerability and timeless melody, pairing acoustic ache with more swinging-riff swagger than you maybe expected. (You couldn’t ask for a more illustrative sample of the album’s emotional dimension than its tracklist: “Honey Bunny” to “Die,” “Saying I Love You” to “Vomit,” “My Ma” to “Magic” to “Just A Song.”) It’s about life, art, and heart. The album’s all the talk today, so pre-order it at True Panther, and talk below.

Die is the standout for me. That song just rocks.
Love the album. Can’t choose any stand outs just yet – I’ve only listened to it twice so far – but I do adore “Just a song”
Christopher Owens has done it again.
just a song reminds me so much of belle&sebastian. favorite band for a long time, and this is perfect.
Compared to Album, I’m still a little unsure about how I feel — I love how everything sounds but I miss tracks like God Damned with Owens’ more eccentric vocals. That being said, there are some songs on here I absolutely love. I’ve only listened to the entire thing a few times, and I feel like it will be more rewarding with repeated visits.

not my fault…you have bad taste. Go listen to some LMFAO or some shit

If you don’t already, you should follow Christopher Owens on Twitter – @Chri55yBaby. His tweets are awesome, and he’s done a few Twitter “essays” that are really beautiful and moving.
after one listen, i think its another great album by Girls. everything sounds awesome, and chris’ songwriting is just getting better and better… i also really loved the lyrics on this one, he just sounds so optimistic sometimes, its hard not to smile while listening to it!
definitely feelin the more Floyd-y vibes too
Girls never disappoint!
It’s true, Chris’ songwriting gets better with every song. I do wish there were a few more “rockers” though.
FYI- their EP is called “Broken Dreams Club”
It’s getting to the point where these guys are in the “can do no wrong” category. I’ve never been disappointed by anything Girls has released, and this is no exception.

Loving this, but we are talking about 2nd album here, not album 12…….”Can Do No Wrong” category may be a bit much don’t you think?
Sorry, I forgot I was supposed to be aloof and standoffish about the things I enjoy so as not to seem naive and out of touch. My bad.
apology accepted
Thanks!
ummm where are yall listening to this?
I pre-ordered the LP from the link above, but in the meantime I’m listening to the leaked album I downloaded from bittorrent. Not exactly legal, but I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere online. I figure I’ve already paid for it, so whatevs.
I listened to “Die” for the first time, and I was like “Woah bro, where does that come from?” Really great album.
hey is there anyway to stream it without torrenting it? I torrented it (calm down, I plan on buying it on itunes (calm down again thats how I buy music.)) and I want to let people know where to listen to it without downloading it.
I had to say this…Your comment is hilarious!
After listening to this album I think I need to start becoming a Girls fan.
hey!
yeah you do they are good
Love.. love.. love.. it’s just an amazing album!
Enjoying the music a lot, have to warm up a bit to Christopher’s lyrical style this time around… which is strange since it’s essentially the same as it was before.
:\
I’m probably alone in this, but I really wish I could enjoy his voice more. The songwriting is awesome, “Vomit” and “Forgiveness” are particularly great, but I can’t get into it as much as I’d like. The vocals are so meh.
Does “Die” remind anyone else of “Highway Star” by Deep Purple?
Tell me I’m not crazy.
Yeah, the verse is almost an exact copy. Not knowing the lyrics to “Highway Star” I thought it was a cover at first. The chorus obviously goes in a different direction. I love the last 2 minutes where it changes tempo and slows down. Great song.
The first three songs are fantastic; to reiterate what everyone is saying, “Die” goes so hard
The fourth, fifth, and sixth (“Vomit”) ones too… sheesh this is a really spectacular album
I was really disappointed the first time i listened through the album, but im listening to it again and its seriously soo good
I am so happy that this exists.
a rapidshare link or stream would be good. Not sure what the point of this comment party is, without a link to a source? Is Stereogum condoning piracy then?
As a website that I assume relies on advertising, and traffic to said advertising, then the point of the comment party, I assume, would be to let people who have ‘heard’ the album to discuss the quality of the album while also providing a bump in traffic. It has occurred before with Tyler The Creator, Radiohead, and others. Essentially, if you are the type to download an ‘indie’ genre-ed album, then you most likely will want to express an opinion about the album in some discussion-based setting.
Also, the story explicitly provides a link to the purchasing site, while providing no way of obtaining the leaked product (apart from the ‘its out there’ gesture), thereby not condoning or condemning anything at all.
Therefore, the point of this comment party is to provide a place where people can provide their opinions on a band /album at the point where a majority of readers have heard said band/album.
What he said
Someone broke into my car last night, which I discovered this morning. Nothing was taken, but I felt like shit. Then I listened to this record and everything was ok.
And now “Die” is the theme song for the person who broke into your car!
Sorry about the break-in, crooks blow.
‘Album’ kinda had a 60s feel to it, now ‘FSHG’ has a 70s feel to it. Can we expect an 80s album next
I like the album btw
This one has a lot of that 60′s sound as well, IMO. The 70′s sound is definitely prevalent, though. I can tell you this. Dude listens to a lot of Elvis Costello and the Attractions.
OMG OMG OMG can’t wait
Die = Biggest surprise this year.
It’s so much more different compared to previous releases, I’m glad they’re experimenting.
album of the year
dont even want to talk about the greatness…would rather just listen
i’m curious too whether it’s streaming somewhere or most people are just pirating it for now until it comes out
This album is good. Really, really good. I’m glad I delved into Album and the EP first, because I think listening to the entire Girls output adds to the enjoyment. Their evolution and sonic choices throughout their careers is really interesting. They seem like they’re able to play any genre of rock and rock-pop. It’s pretty masterful.
this album is entirely beautiful.
The first time I heard this band, which was through this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGkdEktvV-k
I knew there was something special! There’s no hype about them at all. They’re simply of a quality and realness in rock music that, frankly, despite all the great music of this decade, hasn’t been touched upon since the 90s.
Without intending to sound confrontational or condescending, Girls is a band that was endlessly hyped circa 2009. However, three excellent releases in and everyone is still just about excited about their music. They have something special and it’s amazing to hear. I think your comment about quality and realness hits it spot on.
In all honesty, i am not quite sold on this album. My biggest problem with this album has to be the production. It dosen’t fall close to either Album or Broken Dreams Club at all. For me at least, i just don’t seem to find it as exciting. It is on a median between lush and simple that i find somewhat uninteresting. The songwriting is great on here and there are two tracks i absolutely love (“Honey Bunny and “Vomit) but i just wish the rest of the songs contained more character. That is just my opinion anyway…
I’m honestly just going to say that I don’t like this album. It’s not that I’m not a fan of Girls’ other work. It’s just me not liking this at all. I’ve given this album hours already and can’t seem to grap but two tracks on it. I don’t understand why they had to put these 6-minute+ songs on here when there isn’t really anything going on in them. It’s almost like they’re a filler, but what are they filling? Not really anything. I’m surprised no one has said anything about hows similar some of the song “Die” sounds to Wolfmother’s “Woman” or the bridge to “Knights of Cydonia” by Muse. Go ahead and tell me I have bad taste because you probably have nothing better to say and you feel attacked. I just don’t understand what they’re going for with this record.
“I just don’t understand what they’re going for with this record.”
It’s a 70s rock record, Girls-style. It makes sense that this isn’t clicking with you, though, since you hear Muse & Wolfmother in “Die” instead of Sabbath and Zeppelin.
“I just don’t understand what they’re going for with this record.”
That’s not surprising, given that you are hearing specific songs by Wolfmother & Muse in “Die” instead of getting an overall vibe of Zeppelin and Sabbath. This is a 70s album, Girls-style.
Riffs similar to the one that opens “Die” are pretty common in hard rock.
To clarify, now – I’m not calling into question your taste, but the limited scope of your references.
yeah, im not sure either. i love Honey Bunny and Alex. Die is just a sub-articsmonkeys dirge. Saying I Love You is teenage fanclub and the start of My Ma reminds me to much of Cat Powers ‘the greatest’… with that said, vomit is great. And the first half of the album sounds great. The second half is too slow and wishy washy….. maybe its a grower – but i dont want a grower, i want a BAM! of an album
love the guitar work…its definitely more of a guitar album. im a huge Girls fan with lots of expectations going into this one…I gotta say i feel the same way about Band of Horses’s Infinite Arms album: too soft, the wrong songs were chosen and greats like “Lysandre” were left off, dead end songs like How Can I Say or Jamie Marie. Stuff like Forgiveness, Vomit, Alex and My Ma have terrific Floydesque guitar that takes the songs through their themes. I just feel stuff like Magic and Die personify my take it or leave it disappointment with this album. JR isnt producing…..somethings been fucked with here and i dont like it. 6/10
serious question — does anyone think the leak is not how the final album will sound? i don’t necessarily mind it, but the mixing makes Chris’ vocals secondary — or perhaps equal — to the instruments. which is interesting, and i’m not necessarily against it, but i’m surprised — his vocals were so front & center on their other output…. so i guess i’m wondering if it’s a mistake in this early leak?
Yeah perhaps this is just something wrong with my copy of the leak, but the songs have excessive breaks. There is a good 10-15 seconds of silence after all music ends on every song.
p.s. i miss the days when stereogum’s premature evaluation WAS the comment party
bring them back!! (TKOL fucked this all up, didn’t it?)
did anyone else hear a weird noise at 5:58 on track 9?
yeah! its like a rewind thing kinda odd
I enjoy the diversity on this disc, however, my favorite tracks are the ones that sound as if they could have been on the last album. “Just a Song” and “Jamie Marie” are my current favorites. Can’t wait to give it repeat listens….Connor Oberst ain’t got shit on Chris Owens.
