R.I.P. Nick Ashford

In an era where songwriters like The-Dream and Dr. Luke step out of the shadows and become their own, high-visibility hit factories, Nick Ashford and wife/writing partner Valerie Simpson were quietly responsible for some of Motown’s most bombastic singles in the late ’60s before breaking out to modest success as performers themselves in the mid-’70s. And, you know, they wrote “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing” which is pretty fucking epic. Ashford has died from throat cancer, with which he’s battled for several years. He was 70 years old.

Check out Ashford & Simpson performing their biggest hit after the jump.
