Jack and Alison’s “Treat Me Like Your Mother” seemed to have seen its most radical redressing when the mercurial pair shot the shit out of each other in a desert, but then somehow Diplo got commissioned to fuck with the track a bit. Good call on that, too. Diplo, in a manner true to his alchemical abilities with samples and sound snatches, builds a solid Major Lazer-ish electro dancehall track on the back of what I find the most annoying part of the original, that make-it-stop “M-A-N-I-P-U-Late” refrain. (OK, well I don’t really like Jack’s “time to manipulate” stuff either. Sorry.) Anyway, the remix is all red light district synths and echoing shout outs, rumbling bass and sexy beats — mostly unrecognizable to the original save the vocal rephrasing and well worth a listen.

An MP3 of the remix is up for free download at RCRD LBL. The Dead Weather’s debut Horehound is out now via Third Man/Warner Bros. Those buying the album via iTunes received the bonus track “Outside,” a rattling and Kinksy garage rocker you can hear here:

  1. If you cherish your ears, please do not download the Diplo remix. Sounds like something Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera would do!

    pretty sick.

  3. well diplo seems to have managed to rape and pillage yet another song to the point of unrecognisability….stick with the original

  4. True, he cuts the original to shreds, recognizable only by the short vocal clips, but he does a great job of fitting those clips into a damn good dance track. I should check out more stuff by this guy, cause his remix of Britney Spears’ “Circus” is sick as well.

For another example of a track getting completely torn apart and something completely engrossing made out of the remnants, check out the Mad Decent remix of “Id Engager” by of Montreal. I love both the original song and the remix for what they are, on their own terms ? not by my preconceived notions of what they should or shouldn’t be.

Ugh. Sorry. Sounds like a everything bagel, there is just way too much going on it does not make sense.

“Oooh, I can’t understand what’s going on, my brain hurts, therefore this song is not good.” Nice reasoning.

Also, the everything bagel is the premiere bagel for the very fact that it has everything.

I gotta say I agree. It’s like he’s trying to prove that he’s a white guy doing all this stuff, but it’s too conscious of that, it ends up messy. I checked out his other stuff too, gave it a shot, it’s the same. I guess every breed needs a poster boy, but I can’t dance to it.
