We posted about Philadelphia post-Hockey Night quintet Free Energy’s catchy classic rock via their James Murphy and Eric Broucek-produced 7″. It’s out now on DFA because it’s nice to dance to ’70s guitar hooks. See, for example, “Dark Trance,” the band’s best song so far, which you’ll find streaming over at MySpace. It’s a pretty instant mix of ’90s slacker-rock, Television’s downtown NYC (via a Strokesian update), and something more Cheap Trick than that suggests. (It’s also not at all dark or trance-like, btw.) The song will appear on their forthcoming Stuck On Nothin’ full-length (more on that soon).

The “Free Energy” 7″ is out via DFA.
