When we suggested the Denver-via-Santa Fe low-tech beat-maker Travis Egedy was a Band To Watch, a number of people took us too literally and fixated on his fashion sense instead of his (I’d say) brilliant sophomore collection Dark Rift. Brilliant? Yes. The guy has true production and compositional skills and has found a uniquely compelling way to merge a deep blend house, noise, synth pop, darkwave, psychedelia, world music, and trippy new age space-time theories into emotionally compelling soundscapes. To go back to the beginning, the guy indeed has personality and his own weirdo style, but what’s wrong with that, Ziggy Stardust? Ponder that while you navigate the prismatic “Cyclical Cyclical (Atlantis)”‘s shiny layers.

Dark Rift is out 8/4 via Lovepump. He’s on tour with labelmates and past remix subjects HEALTH in September:

09/10 – Los Angeles, CA @ The Troubadour
09/10 – San Francisco, CA @ Bottom of the Hill

arguing about fashion is worse than trying really hard to look a certain way.
this dude’s music possesses a lot of fantastic texture and emotion by way of chopping up pre-existing structures and putting them to a new use – i think thats great.

i love how being a stereogum ‘band to watch’ pretty much means you’ll never be heard of again. good luck to this guy though

it does seem like the Band To Watch column is often the first and last time you’ll hear of a band, but they also featured vampire weekend and beirut and a handful of other noteworthy bands in the Band To Watch column in the past. it’s true, they’re lucky if they are batting .250, but they’ve had some good calls in the past.

if you don’t like the bands stereogum praises, why bother reading and commenting on their blog? big ups to travis pictureplane. the album is great, the dude is a truly sincere and wonderful person, and he deserves the praise cos he’s been working hard for years on this stuff.
