There’s a good chance the majority of MGMT’s core audience know nothing about the Clean. This isn’t their fault. They were barely alive during the seminal New Zealand band’s heyday. Still, that didn’t stop Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser from putting their spin on the group’s classic 1981 calling card “Anything Could Happen” at All Points West. Good timing: As we’ve mentioned, the Clean have a gorgeous new album Mister Pop out soon on Merge. Who knows, maybe this will lead MGMT’s minions to David Kilgour & Co. Anything could happen:

what is it with people on here? every few stories i click on i always see someone complaining that its a grab for “indie cred”.
seriously. i dont think most indie artists care what people think of them. Thats what makes them “indie”. The majority of them are great enough musicians to be signed to a major and write catchy pop songs that will give them fame. For them its not about being held in a higher regard among peers or the masses. Its about a pure emotional expression through music.
I think that you guys who keep complaining about bands looking for “indie cred” are the ones who want it. I’ll let you in on a little tip, grasping at it wont get you any.
Ah roofy you’re young. Wait until you get jaded like the rest of us so you realize the word “indie” is absolutely meaningless.
dont forget the kids are always right. I was shocked that the last MGMT record blew up- but you know what? that shit bumps! now they cover the clean – maybe they’re the truth?

Weren’t all the comments in the Jay Reatard thread basically of the same “dude’s an asshole for trying to show how ‘indie’ he is” variety? Because that’s what it looked like. So yeah, the kid has a point.
And MGMT would’ve been better off covering the Tall Dwarfs. They were better.

wow The Clean, I thought these guys couldn’t get any better. Their music knowledge is so top notch, I’d love to just have a conversation with them.
