We saw it with the Shins, now it’s happening again: Either someone at iTunes is enjoying “accidentally” leaking anticipated indie records before street date, or there are a few cracks in the Apple dam that may need inspecting. Today has become Consolers Of The Lonely day, thanks to a gaffe at iTunes that’s allowed a handful of Raconteurs fans to get the record early, even before the P2Ps got to it. If you try now you’ll see this…

…but of course at this point there’s more than one place to grab it. We feel bad, and all — the band tried so hard to surprise us with that out of the blue LP announcement to find the surprise ultimately is on them — but before Jack gets started this time at least he’ll know at least some money exchanged hands on this one.

  1. Fucking itunes. I am staying away from anything about the album. I want to hear it for the first time after I buy it, just like they intended.

Not the first time iTunes has made albums available before their official release date. I bought Writers Block 3+ months before it’s state side release. A couple weeks after my purchase it was removed from the iTunes store. Thanks Apple.

Will O, that’s just lame. do you think the bad gives a living crap about you or when you hear it? is it going to sound any different after you buy it?…no, so what difference does it make? it’s 2008, times have changed and so has how albums are heard.

    • Well, if they don’t give a crap, then why the hell is there so much news recently about albums being leaked? It seems if bands didn’t care, this wouldn’t be an issue.

    • if they didnt care they wouldn’t have made such a ruckus about the sudden release, and their reasons why

you are living up to your name

That’s a bit harsh, dumb, each to their own, surely? I remember feeling crushed when I discovered Zeitgeist had been released early where I live. Granted, everything comes out here on the Friday before the official (UK?) release on a Monday anyway, but since it was meant to be some unusual day like a Tuesday or something, I thought it wouldn’t work that way. It definitely felt less special when I finally got hold of the album, knowing that people had all heard it already when it wasn’t even supposed to have been in the shops, and I was, essentially, late in hearing it.

  5. The only reason bands care about leaks is the money.

  6. I posted about this on my blog (I have to keep one for my English class and post a lot about bands and music news), and I got a comment from “WEB SHERIFF” thanking me for plugging the album and for not posting any links to a pirated copy or something. It was weird. This was only a few days after I got a 3-paragraph long comment written entirely in French. Which was kind of exciting, but unfortunate because I take German as my foreign language. The internet is weird.
And excuse me, but “Web Sheriff?” You’ve got to be kidding me. Their website is kinda hilarious. I guess Jack’s pulling out all the stops to fix this one… lol.

  7. So who is bold enough to admit that this album is just sub par, and that all of Jack’s creativity obviously went into “Icky Thump.” Seriously, this album jumps from one trite and/or cringe-worthy lyric to the next, and after four spins I’ve just accepted that these sessions didn’t produce anymore than three songs that stuck me in the same way their entire debut album did. But alas, I know I’ll be blasted for ragging on Jack White, so bring on the hate fest.

I will take that trip with you Ju Bean. I love Jack White’s music as much as anyone, but I can’t get into this album. There are a couple moments, but that’s it.

    It’s sub-par. Not really a surprise there.

I just can’t wait to see all the positve reviews for it.

    Hi Everyone (& ICanRead – again) ,

On behalf of XL Recordings and Warner Bros Records, many thanks for plugging “Consolers Of The Lonely” and The Ranconteurs’ pioneering, ‘fans-first’ release concept … .. it’s a pity about the early leak via iTunes, but thanks also, on belalf of the labels and the artist, for not posting any pirate links … .. it’s not long to go now until the official release (on Tues), so your patience is much appreciated by all concerned.

    Regards & Happy Easter,

    WEB SHERIFF
