Stereogum has partnered with W Hotels to deliver a series of intimate concert performances from some of our favorite artists. First up is one of Stereogum’s 40 Best New Bands Of 2010, Active Child, who played an exclusive session for us at the W San Francisco. Over the summer Active Child released the delicately woozy debut album You Are All That I See, pushing his gossamer soul-inflected new wave to new heights. He’s collaborated with How To Dress Well, booked a tour with M83, and as you’ll see in the Session, developed a stronger stage presence than almost anyone else in the bedroom-pop game. Watch “Hangin On”:
Now we’re giving away a chance to one lucky reader (US residents only, sorry) and a friend to attend our next Suite Session starring DOM at Washington D.C.’s W Hotel on Tuesday, 11/15/11. Hunny!
I first came across DOM in January of 2010, when I heard a Gobble Gobble remix of song “Jesus” on Get Off The Coast. Soon after, “Burn Bridges” and “Living in America” surfaced… then songs “Bochicha,” “Hunny,” and “Rude as Jude” were released. I loved all of them. Ever since, DOM has been consistent with the material they have released, with my favorite of their newest songs being “Family of Love,” “Damn” and “Things Change.” It has been really cool to see their careers progress from a buzz band in a couple of online blogging circles trying to learn more about the guys, to a nationally recognized buzz band playing across the country.
It is hard for me to pick a favorite song, because I have been listening to them for the past couple of years and I feel as though the lyrics of many of DOM’s songs are applicable to my life as well (maybe a product of being the same age) – but, if I have to pick a favorite I will go back to the song that originally captivated me the most – BURN BRIDGES. Between the lyrics, flow and sound of the song everything is there – in place, and seamless.
I would love to see the guys play live, especially at the W Hotel in Washington, D.C. – the city I was living in, and working in (for Dennis Kucinich) – while originally obsessing over the music. Being in Congress, working for an awesome congressman (at the time of healthcare legislation) while being verbally assaulted by Tea Party supporters – it was a great time for “Living in America” to come into existence in my life.
Burn Bridges, love Dom
