The Beach Boys’ legendary Smile is finally (officially) seeing the light of day, as you might have heard, and today we’re giving out one of the boxes. The Smile Sessions box set includes 5 CDs, 2 LPs, and 2 7” singles as well as a booklet, photographs and other deluxe packaging. To enter, you need be a fan of Stereogum on Facebook and comment with your favorite Beach Boys album via Facebook Connect (do not use your ‘Gum user account on this post — we’ll have to be able to check if you are a fan of Stereogum on FB when the sweepstakes ends). I know it’s cliché but Pet Sounds is my favorite. It’s such a perfect album from start to finish.
So cliche. All of society is laughing at you. It’s a good album. Who cares how many people agree.

I think it’s hard to argue against Pet Sounds, and that’s probably my favorite record. But I’ve still got a soft spot for all the early 60′s cheesy Beach Boys stuff… like seriously, how great is Little Deuce Coup?? Summer Days (And Summer Nights) is a pretty good mix of that and Brian Wilson’s later, artsier stuff… plus it’s got Help Me, Rhonda (my all time favorite BB song), Girl Don’t Tell Me, and California Girls. So good guys.

My favorite Beach Boys album is Pet Sounds. Hey Stereogum, how about you start announcing when a winner to a contest has been chosen and then naming that winner? Sometimes, not doing so is a real inconvenience, like the way that I have been waiting and waiting to know if I have a reason to go ahead and buy the very limited NIRVANA box set. Also, by never providing any evidence that people win these contests, it raises the question of whether anyone does win them.
How could it be anything other than Pet Sounds? It’s as close to perfection as the Beach Boys will get.

Pet Sounds with All Summer Long coming in a close second!
My favorite Beach Boys album is Friends. I know most people will say Pet Sounds or SMiLE, but it’s Friends for me. It’s Brian’s mellow record, a sort of welcome back from bad times. Through that record, you could tell Brian realized he like writing songs again and had fun. It also has some of the first great Dennis tracks. Perfect for a weekend morning.

The album I find myself listening to most these days is “Holland.”
It’s such an unusual collection, and the addition of outside musicians and songwriters makes it quite unique. ‘Big Sur’ and ‘Leaving This Town’ are such great songs.
