On “Thirty One Today,” Aimee Mann sings about a disappointing 31st birthday in that familiar sad and sunny way. It’s the lead track from her forthcoming seventh solo album @#%&! Smilers — which is difficult to remember how to spell correctly. The 13-track collection’s her followup to 2005’s conceptually anchored The Forgotten Arm and 2006’s Christmas disc One More Drifter In The Snow. Here, Easter passes and another birthday arrives. You’ve gotten a little older and nothing’s changed except you’re a little closer to being dead. You know? You don’t? You will.

Old-fashioned, post-Magnolia rock!

@#%&! Smilers is out 6/3 on her own SuperEgo label. You can catch Aimee live, too.

    Kinda catchy.

This song is very middle-of-the-road. Nothing exciting, and verging on mind numbingly boring.
