Die Antwoord

South African rave-rap terrorists Die Antwoord, who became global viral sensations last year and who somehow turned that into an Interscope contract, have parted ways with their major label, claiming that Interscope was doing its best to turn them into something more pop-friendly. Instead, they’re planning to self-release the new album TEN$ION on their own label Zef Recordz. And with that announcement, they’ve given us a new video called “Fok Julle Naaiers,” a title that translates to “Fuck You All.” The black-and-white clip doesn’t have the same eyeball-exploding weirdness that the group’s earlier videos brought, but not a lot would. Instead, the black-and-white video mostly features bare-chested dudes, many of them with bad tattoos and firearms, staring down the camera. There’s also a whole lot of scorpion/tarantula/butterfly/worm action.

With the new video, they’ve also uploaded a new clip in which rat-mustached frontman Ninja explains that they aren’t homophobic and that the elaborately latex-masked DJ Hi-Tek (at least, I hope that’s a mask) is gay. Figure it all out for yourself and watch both videos below.

If you didn’t know, pretty much all of Hi-Tek’s ridiculous and incendiary lyrics are direct quotes from this amazing, perplexing Mike Tyson press conference.

  2. hahaa. You want a group who’s first single off their new album translates to “Fuck all y’all” to tone it down? What did the label expect them to do?

  3. i love ninja’s tattoos. they give a sense of immediacy and sincerity that full color six session tattoos could never deliver.

  4. Amazing how Dj H-Tech has been announced as gay..as a way to state that the band is not homophobic!
You know, the same DJ Hi-Tech that has not featured in any of the main videos…and when he has- has been represented by multiple people.

I am not buying that crap for one moment!
Their previous track ‘Evil Boy’ featured the line; ‘Listen here, you fokken asshole, i don’t want to go to the bush with you, i am not gay’!

An amazing u-turn to declare that their ever-changing DJ is now a gay man!

    • In south africa among the traditional tribal culture there it’s a rite of passage for a young man to go into the bush with an elder and perform a rite in which they do some crazy circumcision thing basically scarring the young man for life. if you don’t go through with this, you are branded as an “evil boy”. that line was a blast on the irony that these tribal people are VERY homophobic despite the fact that they take these kids into the bush to touch their junk. he was making fun of them.

Maybe you’d buy the line if you knew what you were talking about.

      • ^^^^^^Exactly what I would have put. Do the research or stop complaining, Tivert. The depth itself of the song, ‘Evil Boy’, is fantastic- I love Die Antwoord’s orientation and outspoken views.

  5. In “evil boy”s lyrics evil boy (not ninja or yolandi), uses “i don’t want to go to the bush with you” to refer to the older members in the community performing dangerous circumcisions on teen boys to make them “men”. To him, not only does circumcision by an older man with a dirty knife sound risky and painful, but also kinda gay.

  6. Excuse me, but your translation of ‘Fok julle naaiers’ is incorrect. It doesnt simply mean fuck you all. The word ‘naaiers’ actually means people who have sex, or who fuck, more appropriately. But at the same time, a ‘naaier’ can also be a person who is a wanker, an asshole, or something derogatory like that.

So my own translation to English (to get at the proper meaning) would be something like ‘Fuck you wankers’.

  7. Some of best friends are South Africans…

Even if DJ Hi-Tek is gay, and they are best friends, and every one loves every one in South Africa – I still get to be bothered by the word “faggot”. I don’t even have to be gay to do so!

I also tire of the “don’t give words power” ideology – it’s a veiled, loose form of “blaming the victim” (at least with the same logic) that is far more insidious than outright bigotry because it’s frequently adopted by self-proclaimed progressive people.

I’ll admit, I stopped watching the video at DJ Hi-Tek’s part because I really don’t like hearing the word ‘faggot’ repeated – it makes me nervous/anxious. But knowing those were quotes from an interview with Mike Tyson makes me interested again and I wish that was the only explanation and not that lame-duck, half-handed explanation (which it was never touted as an apology but it sort of seemed like a forced one – did they apologize in it? I’m not watching it again.)

  8. Should’ve gotten Max to DJ. Missed opportunity.

  9. these guys are trippin me out man

  10. Halloween already happened right? Only now did I realize that I should have dressed up as Yo-Landi Vi$$er from Die Antwoord. Next year?

  11. Ferns, I think if you’re taking these lyrics and mind fucking them to death, you probably shouldn’t be listening to any music. Unless of course, it has no lyrics or sound more like a pbs morning show for children. It sounds like you need to RELAX. If the word faggot makes you queezy, you’d better stay indoors because it’s still used loosely around the world. Dont be so uptight and quit over-analyzing.Youre ruining it for the rest of us.

  12. Ferns, I’m guessing you’re a cultural studies or sociology student.
I had to smirk at the “I’m not homophobic, my best friend is gay.” Used as a dodge SO often. But my guess is he didn’t think to *not* use those words because it’s exactly the way he described it, maybe people are more relaxed about language in SA.

Having been the victim of homophobic bullying for my entire adolescence, I adopted a similar stance as DJ Hi Tek towards the word. I made it my own too.

  13. It is VERY likely that those lines come from Mike Tyson that had a freakout about 10 years back. Check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pViMzR_ylXg and see how they based it on that.

  14. For those speculating that DJ Hi-Tek’s part are inspired by the Mike Tyson rant, I’d way that DJ Hi-Tek is functionally doing a cover of Mike Tyson.

  15. I am a faggot. I am a cock sucking, shirt lifting, pillow biting queer. Yep, I am a FAGGOT. say it loud y’all, ain’t contagious….F A G G O T! People need to get over themselves, seriously. The whole ‘give words power thing’ is not tired – it’s true. Someone can only make you feel inferior if you give them the power to do so – I grew up in rural right wing South Africa and I’ve never, EVER let anyone have the kind of power of me….so really….everybody get.a.grip! It is, after all – just a word.

  16. Not to be a stickler here, but “they,” as far as I know, DON’T call South Africa “the rainbow nation”…do they?

  17. so, does everyone agree ferns is an idiot. cool.

i think words only have the power of association negative or positive.

and if a word makes you uncomfortable… maybe you need to venture out of your comfort zone a bit.

  18. die antwoord and odd future I can see but Lana Del Rey??? dont see the connection there. PLEASE ODD FUTURE AND DIE ANTWOORD TOUR> FUCK YES PLAY NY AND ILL BE HAPPY AS FUCK

  19. So what if Hi-Tek may or may not be gay? Does it really matter, or change anything at all? Okay.. great, maybe hes gay. Where do we go from here? Anywhere? Or we having a childish game of calling out the faggot?

Seriously I don’t get it, whether or not someone is gay doesn’t change anything at all. No one here considers anyone else’s opinions important to anyone else at all, so why even bother trying? Out of all the shit you could have against this group, you play the “faggot” card.

    Are you that stupid?
