The online blogopolis is abuzz today with the news that David Alien 3 Fincher will be directing an adaptation of Charles Burns’s creepy shoegazehorrorcore graphic novel, Black Hole. This could be really great news, or it could be really Panic Room news. David Fincher is kind of hit or miss. Not to mention the fact that Black Hole, the story about a bizarre sexually transmitted disease that ravages a group of suburban teenagers in the 70s*, is just fucking creepy and weird.
Most websites are calling this David Fincher’s Ghost World, which seems wildly inaccurate. True, both Ghost World and Black Hole are graphic novels about teenagers written by white men within the past decade (give or take), the similarities basically end there. Ghost World is about the quiet space in between hormonal rushes that overtake young people alienated by an incomprehensible social world that has no place for the unique or the individual. Black Hole is about fucking and drugs and eclipses and AIDS and the Apocalypse and the terror of entering adulthood and the ways in which that passage murders the innocence of youth.
Or, you know, whatever.
But so, OK. The only question now is who will Jared Leto play?
*Honestly, even though this is basically an exact match to every other single-sentence synopsis on the blogs, I did actually read Black Hole and know what I am talking about so take it easy. And no, I’m not defensive.
