Coldplay on SNL

Coldplay made their inevitable return to Saturday Night Live on this weekend’s Emma Stone-hosted episode, playing their Mylo Xyloto singles “Paradise” and “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” on a stage covered, for some reason, in multicolored pinwheels. Chris Martin’s dancing, it bears mentioning, gets tougher to figure out as time goes on. And in related Martin news, he also showed up during the show’s Weekend Update segment, playing a backup singer for Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig’s Garth & Kat characters. Watch all three videos below.

Garth & Kat: Still not funny! At all! Of course you may disagree.

  1. It’s actually pretty easy to figure out Chris’ dancing: He’s a white guy. What I never understood however are color-coordinated costume theme thing that they and Arcade Fire seem to enjoy. It’s kind of boy band-ish / Kids Incorporated, no? Also, I have to agree about those pinwheel-dreamcatcher thingys — They definitely take away from everything else going on in the background.

Other than that, “Paradise” sounds better when the tempo is slowed down and Emma Stone will make any fluorescent mess look like calming shades of tranquility.

  2. It’s not on Hulu, but here’s the Crying To Adele sketch while it lasts…

Coldplay briefly cameo in this too.

      • aaawww you remembered : )

It’s funny that pointing out the website’s obvious affection for a band, while not even making a judgment or comment on that band’s quality in any way, just automatically MUST be derisive (well for at least five people)

        • i feel ya<3, i was in the exact same position when you put me in my place last week!

hahaha*cough*hahahahahahah*ccough*hahhaha*cough. i am literally DIYING over the irony at play here!

  4. Just when you think SNL is gonna be funny again, they go and do something like that. At least Emma and Coldplay were alright.

  5. I love that the drummer has to play a guitar because Chris Martin has to dance like that.

  6. i’m getting really irritated with Coldplay leaning on pre-recorded audio. A bit here and there for enhancement is ok, but seriously….even the Killers and Interpol hired some guy to play extra parts. If you care about the world so much, Chris, give a guy a job.

  7. It really makes you respect the frontman, and it shows while singers sans instruments don’t really exist anymore. That shit is hard to do in a rock band. Every semi-awkward move Bono has ever made looks like gold now.

  8. Thom Yorke is a much better dancer.

  9. coldplay is so white bread it’s almost funny. ALMOST

  10. i like seeing guests on SNL try to hide their laughter. :)
