The new video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers track “Monarchy Of Roses” is a chopped-up, animated, mostly black-and-white affair, in which the Chili Peppers inhabit environments taken directly from the drawings of a particular artist, the great Black Flag-affiliated pen-and-ink brutalist Raymond Pettibon. Marc Klasfeld directed the video, but it’s credited as being “inspired by the work of” Pettibon. I hope that means they broke him off with some paper, though I guess Raymond Pettibon isn’t exactly hurting for money. Watch the clip below.
The Chili Peppers’ album I’m With You is out now on Warner Bros.

What I find weird about this is that Pettibon is still actively making art for musicians (Crystal Antlers, OFF!, Cerebral Ballzy) so why didn’t they just get Pettibon himself to make their video if they enjoy his work so much? Something tells me that the Chili Peppers love the art of hardcore, but it doesn’t love them back…
He heard the hook and said no.
