When Nirvana performed on Saturday Night Live in 1992, Kurt Cobain wore a Flipper shirt that he made with a magic marker. As Vol. 1 Brooklyn points out, a version of that same shirt now retails at Forever 21 for $16.90. How does shit like this even happen? Someone better be getting paid for this.

This is kind of depressing to see, but it may have something to do with a licensing of the logo or design. There’s this Etsy store (http://www.etsy.com/shop/LostRecords) that sells some really great looking band t-shirts of Big Black, Shellac, Minutemen, Pere Ubu, This Heat – basically the awesomest of bands who you can never find shirts of — and they sell a similar Flipper one. Either the screen prints are loosely licensed, or everyone is ripping off the punks.
I don’t know much (anything) about etsy, but those shirts look suspect
What’s worse is that they don’t even look like they’re printed on fitted tees, either.
Keepin’ it real
And let’s not forget — This isn’t Forever 21′s first attempt at commercializing punk and hardcore: http://stereogum.com/57382/dischord_reponds_to_forever_21_bootleg_minor_threa/news/

hey guys great news manufacturing
Good Eye Punk Purists- you can barely see the Flipper t-shirt in the SNL video– thanks to a stupid grey sweater. Now Courtney Love will sue and have more money to meltodwn.
Actually, there’s lot of pictures of him wearing it. One of them is even in the In Utero booklet.
Cue Courtney Love blaming Dave Grohl in 3… 2… 1…
