Sub Pop has just published a massive compendiums of year-end lists from its bands on the label’s website. Some of those top-10 lists cover the year’s music, but just as many of them just list out absolutely random things. Shabazz Palaces’ Ishmael Butler, for example, gives special consideration to “he alien i saw working in a kebab shop in berlin,” and then goes on to describe that alien in great detail. And in that spirit, we present to you the list that Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold gave, which includes some music and some random stuff, though none of the random stuff is quite as random as the kebab-shop alien.
01 Kurt Vile – Smoke Ring For My Halo & Bill Callahan – Apocalypse – “I got… runner ups… YEEEAAH!” and the part in “Universal Applicant” where Bill does the flare gun sound effects.
02 The license plate that said “SNUTS”
03 The section of “Codex” by Radiohead where he sings “Jump off the end” and the piano ascends but the vocal melody descends. And the drum sound that’s like tapping your finger on a chair at the airport.
04 Portishead in Poznan, Poland & Bill Callahan in Chorzow, Poland.
05 The Walkmen playing horns together in the basement of the Masonic Temple in Cleveland, recording it on my phone, and then watching it all the time.
06 Van Dyke Parks’ business card
07 The album To My Long Lost Love by an anonymous Portland musician. Easily the new album I’ve listened to most.
08 The show Breaking Bad
09 Etta James’ version of “God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind)” by Randy Newman
10 William Tyler, BEHOLD THE SPIRIT! So awesome.

Pecknold also made a Spotify playlist.

cute
the list, i mean
I’d take this list over any other I’ve read so far this year…
I’d rather stare at said “SNUTS” license plate for hours on an end than listen to Bon Iver.
Yeah, totally…….(?)
Uhhhh, Where’s Bon Iver?
Best list so far…
ROBIN PECKNOLD LIKES BREAKING BAD I’M SOLD
Breaking Bad should be at the top of every year-end music list.
