One billion comments! We did it! OK, we did not get a billion comments this year, but we did log more than twice as many this month as we did last December. And that’s all thanks to your intelligent discourse, inside jokes, and kitten covers, just like I hoped for when I ripped this column off from Videogum’s Monsters’ Ball. So thanks for playing along. Now that you’ve survived Christmas and are dry cleaning your $5k Drake jacket for New Year’s, it’s the best time to take a look back at all the fun we’ve had giving each other thumbs up and down in the comments section over the past 12 months. Seems like only yesterday we were sweating our CMJ badges off with Titus Andronicus at Glasslands. Isn’t that right, Patrick Stickles?…

So below, please enjoy this list of the 50 highest ranked comments of the year. We’ll keep this post positive and leave off the 50 worst, but trust that they were mostly misguided folks linking to their band sites apropos of nothing. As for Editor’s Choice, I choose you ALL.

    I can’t believe I have been reading this site for a decade. It seems like just yesterday that I was a post-millennial post-hardcore listener discovering Xiu Xiu for the first time.

    Despite the fact I had a constant presence in the comments section on a daily basis and probably sent way too many tips into their inbox yet got totally shafted in this year’s Top 50 list, 2012 should be a great year for Stereogum. You know, since they’re moving forward on plans to cover Ceremony and all…

    That Drake photoshop still gives me chills.

    If you have two minutes – I recorded my girlfriend a song for christmas (don’t worry, it’s not lame) and I can’t really release it anywhere, but if there’s an appropriate place to share it, this is probably it.

    The story is that she got me a vocal processor for my birthday, which happens to be in December. And we were stoned playing around with the settings, and there is a preset called “Robot” which is brilliant in that it pitch corrects you to a monotone voice an octave down with some sort of flange and sounds hilarious. And it drove her nuts.

    Then I came back from a rehearsal a few days later, and was listening to a recording of it. In particular, an improvised number I had done with a drummer I’m working with where I employed the “Robot” setting in full effect. And she overheard me listening to it, and this drove her nuts as well.

    And so I spent the entire week leading up to christmas recording and mixing the song, and slapped a website together for her with a link to this bandcamp page.

    Anyways, the lesson of the story is that the best gifts are free except for scotch, and probably for some girls, diamonds, and for the most part, actually, free gifts are terrible, but this song turned out okay.

    Aw man. This site just keeps getting worse and worse… Why the snub to djfreshie? He’s given us consistently great -and memorable- releases all year long. He deserved the first prize, hands down… I guess he wasn’t “fresh” enough (see what i did there?). Andy Johnson was just an end of the year sensation. Just because he got a lot (109) of great reviews does it mean he’s the best? You guys really buy all the hype…

    I’m just gonna tell you one thing Andy Johnson: remember James Blake.
