I got there at about 6 to try to beat the crowds and was one of the first twenty people on line, right up there with the die-hards, who were all stereotypical crazy liberals. The woman behind me kept talking about how she’s been on federal watch lists “ever since I got my picture taken with Michael Moore 12 years ago.” For the two hours we waited on line, the one topic of conversation was George Bush and how stupid/horrible/misguided/evil he is. I tried to tune all that out and sit there and read the book.At 8:00 on the dot Jon came out (I’ve gotta give him credit – having been to a lot of these things, I can say that’s it’s pretty rare for someone of his celebrity caliber to actually show up on time).
By the way, the book’s hysterical.

I don’t necessarily dislike Jon Stewart, but I HATE the Daily Show. It’s not funny, it’s not informative: it’s pointless. Although last night when the Bush campaign manager said they were trying to focus on the positive, the entire audience laughed without Jon Stewart making a “joke”, so that was hilarious.

I remember one funny thing with Thomas Lennon (I think) playing Fred Schneider … but otherwise, it wasn’t nearly as funny as THE STATE series.
I actually preferrd the Daily Show when Kilborn hosted.
I also preferred the Kilby version for Stewart’s first six months; but once he settled in and made the show his, it became so much greater.
Now that it’s bigger than ever, it’s less funny than in recent years. Is Stewart grooming himself for the transition to network tv?
I’ve said it here before, Jon Stewart is quite possibly the funniest man on TV right now. (Dave Chapelle is about the only one I can think of who’s even close.)
There is never a Daily Show that goes by that we don’t laugh our asses off, and marvel at how quick witted he is. He also does fantastic, respectful interviews with people whose politics he obviously disagrees with, and I think that’s how he gets the caliber of guests he gets. For crying out loud, he got Bill Clinton to appear! Not bad for a cable channel faux-news comedy show!
I really hope he’s not gearing up for a hop to the networks, because this show is perfect for him. If Comedy Central can hang on to him, he can bring the Daily Show some serious attention.
I just read the O’Reilly interview. Christ, what a putz he is. Jon was totally nice and friendly, and O’Reilly was a mean-spirited, insulting toad. But what would I know? I’m just a stoned slacker.

I LOVE THE STATE. Why, of all the shows in the WORLD, did the state not thrive? I remember they were all ready to put it on network, and then all of a sudden… poof! Now we have to get our Showalter, Michael Ian Black, Thomas Lennon, et al. anywhere we can. Seeing Kerri Kenney play a “chef” in a dishwashing liquid commercial almost broke my heart; Lennon in the Snickers commercial was not as bad. I consoled myself with knowing that KK was acting cutesy, like to her it was all a big joke; she was laughing on the inside. The STATE should be on DVD if any show ever was.
I totally saw Kerri’s band CAKE LIKE at the HORDE festival ten years ago. They weren’t bad! Bizarre when I think about it now. I’m glad she’s back on TV these days. Maybe I should do a big post about Michael Ian Black ’cause I have some good stories about him.
I didn’t even know she was in a band. I think she’s great. I watch Reno 911 on occasion just because I am glad she and TL have a show still. They deserve to make $$.
Karen, have you seen Wet Hot American Summer? It’s pretty much a State reunion (except Chris Meloni from L&O:SVU actually steals the show).
Did anyone see the end of Primetime Live on ABC last night? They did some crappy bit called “That Was The Week That Was” which was apparently supposed to be funny. I think THAT is the evidence that Stewart has an effect. Unfortunately, it has produced complete crap.

Jon Stewart is great (Dull politics -> Hi-Larious comedy? i thouht it couldn’t be done!) and from what I saw of Kilborn (the Late late show) I can tell that Stewart is much funnier. I cant wait to read the new book, it says writers from the show contibute as well.

i love jon stewart. i love the daily show. i love stephen colbert the most though- especially in strangers with candy. you don’t have to be ultra liberal to respect their jokes, but it helps

O’Reilly said, “You know what’s really frightening? You actually have an influence on this presidential election. That is scary, but it’s true. You’ve got stoned slackers watching your dopey show every night and they can vote.” But in fact, O’Reilly has it all wrong. Data released by Comedy Central shows that The Daily Show viewers are 78 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education and 74 percent more likely than the average adult to have a household income of greater than 75-thousand dollars and an occupation of “professional, owner or manager.” According to the same Comedy Central study, The O’Reilly Factor viewers, on the other hand, are only 24 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education and, amazingly, are 15 percent less likely than the average adult to have a household income of greater than 75-thousand dollars and an occupation of “professional, owner or manager.” O’Reilly can apologize if he wants when he’s a guest on The Daily Show a week from tomorrow.

I am not a fan of the Daily Show. Jon Stewart is OK. I think Tough Crowd w/Colin Quin (not sure I am spelling his last name correctly) is extremely funny. It’s a shame, it is being cancelled. Tough Crowd is very honest, and I guess poeple could not handle the straight forward dialogue…
O’Reilley was, no matter how it may look in the transcript, actually fairly civil to Jon Stewart on his show and it looked to me like he may actually respect Jon as a person. The two of them actually seemed to have fun and enjoy their conversations on both shows.
That brought Bill a little closer to human, in my eyes, and it only made me respect Jon that much more.
Mr Stewart’s protestations to the contrary – and as sad a statement on US media as it may be – the Daily Show is the only “news” program that cuts through the “spin” (aka: BS by hacks on both sides of the aisle) to the true story… Oh, if only the “real reporters” on “real news programs” had the integrity to point out the misstatements and blatant LIES of politicians like the “fake” show that Jon hosts.
God bless Jon Stewart and keep him well. We need someone to point out the BS in political discourse, even if only to get laughs.

How could anyone not love the way he handled Crossfire? He told the truth to their faces, calling them “theater,” denying that they have “debates,” and he was funny even when refusing to be funny for them, telling Tucker he wasn’t going to be his “monkey!”

Personally, I find Bill O’Reilly’s show funnier. There’s nothing like watching a red-faced, former gossip TV show host taking himself seriously- especially while he’s furiously misquoting data during a segment called “the no-spin zone.” Comedy GOLD. Sorry, Jon.
