It’s been a long, long time since Van Halen released an album with their cartoonishly awesome first frontman David Lee Roth. Diamond Dave and the band parted ways spitefully after they released the 1984 album 1984, and then the band went on to make a bunch of bullshit with Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone replacing Dave. A couple of years ago, though, Roth and Van Halen reunited for a long arena tour, and now they’ve finally made another album. It’s called A Different Kind Of Truth, and it drops 2/7 on Interscope. The single “Tattoo” arrives Tuesday.
Last night, the band got together — with Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgang once again lamely replacing original bassist Michael Anthony — to play a small show at New York’s Café Wha?, and they’ve got a whole bunch of much larger arena shows coming up. In February, the band will head out on a bigass North American tour. Kool & The Gang, awesomely enough, will open some of the dates. We’ve got their itinerary below, along with some video of last night’s “Panama,” video.

No one under the age of, at the very least, 40 can appreciate just what a tidal change “Van Halen” marked in all of pop and rock music. In a era marked by Player, Pablo Cruise, the soundtrack to “Grease,” Gerry Rafferty and Tuxedo Junction, Van Halen’s debut was EVERY LAST SINGLE BIT as much of a cataclysmic seismic change as “Pink Flag” or “Another Music In A Different Kitchen.” The debut, at the very least, deserves to be listened to with fresh ears by anyone with even a passing interest in pop and rock and their history.
Whoa, dude. Are you Harry Potter?
Agreed. But for such a massively influential band, they’re unique in that to a first approximation, everybody they influenced sucked.
But holy crap, that first album was really something at the time. Right from that spaceship landing noise in the intro to “Running with the Devil”. Even now. Pure fucking rock’n'roll.
you can rehire dave as many times as you want, it ain’t a van halen reunion without michael anthony
Saw them last time around with my dad. Decided it’s not worth it this time around.
PANAMA!
