St. Vincent Covers Pearl Jam's "Black"

While Friday night’s Williamsburg incarnation of the Portlandia Tour featured the likes of Adam Horovitz and Hugh Cornwell (of the Stranglers), St. Vincent’s Annie Clark showed up at Saturday’s stop at the Bowery Ballroom, where she performed Pearl Jam’s “Black.” When Carrie and Fred said that every night’s show would be different, so they ain’t lyin’ bout that (BV Chicago reports that that city’s show featured Sam and Spencer Tweedy as well as Rookie editor/wunderkind Tavi Gevinson and the Mekons’ Sally Timms).       Sadly enough Pearl Jam, although original for the time, have become gentrified in the late 90s and early 00s, so they are sadly associated with bands like Nickelback and Creed (part of the reason the crowd was not so into it).

      Also St. Vincent is extraordinarily good. I did not like the cover on the first, but it really grew on me quickly towards the end.

    Too bad she blabbers through the most powerful part of the song. A classic rock masterpiece ruined. Bummer.
