This is the sound of Coldplay trying to grow some balls. The long awaited introduction to Eno-fied Coldplay comes today, via previously announced FREE MP3 (for just one week, because major labels can’t have a good idea without saddling it with a bad one). Don’t let the atmospheric and ambient noise swell out front scare you too much, “Violet Hill” is a rocker’s march, with Eno dialing Buckland’s guitars into a more biting/less delayed crunch than A Rush Of Blood and X&Y (check the alarm siren bends, etc.). On the other hand, it looks like Brian’s still OK with Mr. Martin’s favored outro trick of gentle voice/piano chorus reprise. Two listen verdict: definitely less likely to put you to sleep. A few more notes to that guitar solo might’ve helped. Download it here or stream below.
Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends is out 6/17 via Parlophone in the UK and Capitol in the US.

First……
you’re on the wrong site, dude
I liked the first two coldplay albums and thought the third had some good moments. but after a couple listens ‘violet hil’l just sounds awkward. I hope the rest of the album is better than this
As a pretty big fan of Coldplay, I’m a bit disappointed. The jury is still out for me on this one. I think the song really leans on the mix and the droning guitars/synth pads. Strip away all of the production and I’m not sure if you’ll find anything special here.
i like it. much stronger single than i was expecting. guitar sounds kind of cheesy but drums are really nice. im excited to hear the rest now.
first? really? on stereogum? i’m going to go back in time, find your mother, and abort you.
Like most Coldplay singles this will probably grow on me. I like the guitars
I like it a lot. But honestly, without the guitar, this would pretty much be the same ol’ Radioheadesque Coldplay we know and (secretly) love. The beginning reminds me of Videotape.
It’s a step in the right direction, not the same beat as Clocks that plagued like all of X&Y, and sounds kind of built for giant concerts. With all that said, I still can’t figure out if I like it or not…
lol @ mitt romney
i like it. nothing ground breaking or not near as great as the Scientist… but it’s good.
i still don’t know why i listen to this. i still hold on to the parachutes days. thoroughly unimpressed.
am i totally off base in saying that it reminds me of a charlatans song later in their career? a decent song from a band we recognize and used to love (albeit secretly in this case), but there’s just no passion or reason to listen to it more than 4 times.
if i were in a band, i wouldn’t want this song to be my first exposure to the public from an upcoming album.
they seem to have lifted some lyrics from U2′s “Playboy Mansion” from the POP album. something about the “banks become cathedrals” or something like that.

Ah, the “banks and cathedrals” bit was originally in “Lemon from Zooropa. Good song, good song. (And I’m diggin’ the new Coldplay, too. Like ben said, stronger than expected!)
Not to out-U2 geek you, but it’s actually “the banks feel like Cathedrals ’cause casinos took their place” from Playboy Mansion.
chili peppers + poser thom yorke voice = new coldplay
and that cover art is an insult
An insult… to Delacroix?
Agreed, the album art is awful
I think the song is a great step in the right direction for this album. It is a move away from Rush of Blood or X&Y. It shows the Brian Eno influence.
And honestly, what gives with the album art knock? First of all, would it matter what it looked like? It would still be criticized b/c it seems to be “cool” to hate on Coldplay. Secondly, I find it to be a pleasant change from the previous three album covers that all look the same. Change is good. This is clearly an attempt to follow a Beatles’s type path – not that I am saying this is in the same level, but that is clearly what they are trying to do.
Honestly, judging by recent comments, whenever a band posts it’s album art; it’s awful.
Song is fantastic step for coldplay. Better than all but three songs from X&Y. The lyrics actually are engaging. Give this album a chance. It’s cool to hate on Coldplay, but I’d be stoked to hear this song performed live.
Wanna know how I know you’re gay?
You like Coldplay.
hmmm..christmas version of Violet Hill? http://s3.amazonaws.com/thejingler/75d9a545f090f93bdca93571d87f0943.jingle.mp3
wow, that version is better than the original. A little bit random, though…
reminds you of videotape…?
coldplay wont ever be on the same level musically as radiohead
some one else said it, strip away the production the bare bones of this song are about as average as it comes
couldn’t agree more. coldplay are nothing more than cheap knock-offs of radiohead and U2. they are virtually passionless and downright boring.
reminds you of videotape…?

thats outrageous, coldplay will never be on the level that radiohead is on musically
personally i hope radiohead never reaches the fan boy status of coldplay
and the cover art as well as the crappy name for that album are almost embarassing

i know someone said it, but this song without the eno production is sub par
dude guys coldplay is the dumbest gayest faggiest band in the universe. anyone who likes them is gay and likes look at boys. theyre like a ripoff of every great band ever.
Alright, so I’ve gone up a little on the indie respect ladder now, right? Quit trying to look cool to all these random people you don’t even know.
ohyeah, just because the music is reminiscent of radiohead doesn’t mean they are on the same level.
on another note, the whole e-mailing system of the single sucks, and the album art is absurd. hopefully the song makes up for that.
If someone would like to post the MP3 on here, that’d be great. For some reason I’m not getting the email.
The song isn’t awful, but hasn’t grown on my yet. The album art is fucking terrible, though then again, I liked X&Y’s art (not the music itself).
I really hope these guys grow in this one.
Coldplay could put out the album of the decade, a masterpiece on par with Ok Computer/in The Aeroplane Over The Sea/etc etc
And hipsters would never admit it nor give it a chance.
And it’d sell millions of copies.
Looks like Chris Martin and crew get the last laugh.
they could? really?
it’s honestly hard to believe that you like neutral milk hotel. if you have something that good to listen to, why bother with mindbogglingly mediocre crap like coldplay?
I’m sure hipsters in ’93-’94 were scoffing at Radiohead. What, with Thom’s ridiculous hairstyle, and Ed’s stupid pirate shirts. If there was a Stereogum then they’d all be saying how badly Radiohead sucked based on “Pablo Honey.” But then they dropped “The Bends”, and the rest is history. So yeah, if Coldplay ever released something good, I would not be ashamed to like it. But they haven’t. And they probably never will this late in their careers. Sorry.

Yes, Coldplay could make the album of the decade. And I LOVE Neutral Milk Hotel. Just because Coldplay aren’t interested in hiding behind a facade in their music and actually putting themselves out there, does not make them crap. It makes them REAL artists. Whether you legitimately love or hate this song, please shut the fuck up about their talent. There’s a reason why whenever anything is posted about them on this website that it always ended up being the most commented on. No one would give a shit to take time to write a comment about the inane “fuck buttons” or any other random band that no one will remember the name of this time in oh.. 2 monhths. Coldplay have at least proven that they’ve got lasting power. Beat that.
coldplay have staying power because they follow a formula that pretty much everyone likes. they bore me. i have yet to hear anything original from them, and until i do, i am not going to bow down to them.
@ DJ Max Power: It’s only funny when you ask the first part and let somebody else answer. Just a tip.
The new song is all right. Better than X&Y, I agree. And while the influence of recent Radiohead is clear, it’s not that annoying when Coldplay-ized, surprisingly. And do I dare detect an improvement in Chris Martin’s lyrics?
So what’s the problem, then? Well, it’s that Chris Martin still tends to rely too much on his falsetto moments and the same vocal riffs. Everything is well constructed, but what will always set Coldplay part from, say, Radiohead (and here, let us end the comparison) is that they will never be as daring in their sheer musicality. Chris Martin at least 75% of the time goes for the cheap and easy hooks. Rush of Blood had the least number of easy melodic resolutions, and that’s why it is still their best album, musically. (Parachutes is their best lyrically, in my opinion.)
This song shows promise for the album. Cross your fingers and all that.
I would just like to say how refreshing the recent comments about Coldplay have been. Someone referred to a “backlash to the backlash”, but I think the almost overwhelmingly positive (or at least, not negative) response represents an open-mindedness and honesty that has been traditionally absent in the blogosphere. I don’t know if it’s a fluke or a sea change, but it’s going to keep me coming back to Stereogum if I feel it’s a community of individuals who listen and then judge, as opposed to the other way around. Cheers!
Second listen better than the first.
The song has more of a kick to it, a la Rush of Blood. That’s good.
It may be the typical Chris Martin trick of quiet piano outro, but this time the chords and rhythm of the piano are more complex. Kudos for that.
re: the Radiohead influence – Let’s be honest, is there any British rock band formed within the last twelve years that doesn’t have some kind of Radiohead influence? Or at least record every album under Radiohead’s shadow?
You radiohead fans have got your heads so far up Thom Yorke’s rear you can’t hear any other music.
That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard. ^ I would gladly choose Thom Yorke or Chris Martin,
I think Brian Eno is the best thing that could happen to that band. He transformed their potential from “well, me auntie likes it so…” to a band actually worth listening to.
And to answer Chris… yes, there’s about a thousand british bands that were formed in the last twevle years that don’t have “some kind of Radiohead influence”…
i can see how this shows that coldplay is growing as a band, but it isn’t doing it for me. you know it’s bad when the song repeats the second time, and you want the beginning ambients to continue and don’t want the real song to begin.
coldplay are reallyyyyy predictable and to be honest i think this sounds ALOT like tracks from the last album, but it’s still catchy and decent and worth releasing.
Nice introduction to their new album. Not as stunning as previous singles though…
This is the best Coldplay song I’ve ever heard. Then again, I’ve forcibly blocked all other Coldplay songs from my memory.
i don’t know. this sounds pretty gay.
I like this song. Classic Coldplay hook, good rythym. The solo is hurtin’ but everything else I like. Should translate extermely well live. Im very excited to see what else is coming.
This song is amazing. I love it. It’s going to be absolutely incredible live, too. I don’t get why everyone hates Coldplay – they’re actually amazing. And yes, they may be Radiohead influenced, but that doesn’t mean they’re trying to be Radiohead. So comparing Chris Martin to Thom Yorke is rather pointless. It’s possible to like Coldplay and Radiohead, you know.
So it seems everyone’s opinion of Coldplay involves some variation of one of the following; (1) omg best band ever, (2) they’re not as good as when i used to like them, or (3) homophobic putdown/not as good as (best band commenter can think of).
Coldplay is apparently the hipster Dave Matthews Band.
radiohead fans dont have there fans so far up thom yorkes ass
radiohead makes quality music. coldplay has talent, its just not on par with radioheas. stop getting so offended over it. sadly the only way that you’d understand is if you got a group of your pals together and tried covering a bunch of radiohead songs, then you’d realize how intricate they are. then try covering some coldplay songs and you’ll find it considerably easier. maybe if you understood how to write, read or play music you’d understand the genius of radiohead. one more thing… coldplay could never make an album on par with ok computer, kid a, amnesiac, or in rainbows…keep dreaming and stop comparing because its not even close.
bands i like that are cooler than coldplay: radiohead; neutral milk hotel; sade.
bands i like that are not cooler than coldplay: john denver.
if x= john denver and y= coldplay, and z= sade, and you take x over y and add how much bullshit i’m full of, i’m sure you’ll come up with something.
the level of difficulty of playing a song does not make it better or worse than another song. Many of the greatest songs are simple (and easy to play)!
I think we can all agree that the argument boils down to Radiohead > Coldplay > John Denver.
Truce.
that’s fucking hysterical.
NOW AY!
John Denver the Baptist > Salome > Radioplay
to kevin:
do you even know how to play a coldplay song? because if you did you would know that the majority of their songs use complex chords. i know because i own all the official tab books, not just reading the shitty transcriptions of their songs done by kurt cobain wannabes on the internet who don’t know how to play anything besides a major power chord.
i would say that more songs than not by coldplay are in alternate tunings… i learned countless of amazing tunings thanks to liking coldplay. they also have a tendency to use really complex and jazzy chords….like maj7th, aug4th, add9ths, etc etc etc….
dont get me wrong, they have some simple songs too. and i love radiohead as well and they have very nice chords. but before you go running your mouth on about how simple coldplay is, just because of the fact they like to write catchier and more “mainstream” sounding melodies than radiohead, know what you’re talking about. to be totally honest i think radiohead gets way too much credit as being “avant garde geniuses” because thom yorke likes to make mumbling vocal lines.
first, in response to anonymous, know what you’re talking about before you tell anybody else to know what they’re talking about.
that said, I don’t think anybody here should be ashamed of listening to Coldplay. They make a certain type of music that is more accessible than some people’s tastes. I prefer more “avant garde genius” music myself, but there was a time when Coldplay was in my rotation too, circa Rush of Blood. No reason to shit on somebody for listening to this band once in a while. I’m sure everybody here has a pretty wide pallet of music they dig into once in a while.
Besides, I’d personally rather know that mainstream music is being defined by bands like Coldplay that write and perform their own material than boy bands or pop divas. Am I alone there?
minorrockstar,
what about my paragraph implied i didnt know what i was talking about? i’d love to hear your response….because i’m sure i know much more about music theory than you do, if you think coldplay doesn’t use some complex & unique chord structures and changes
OMG!! You know how to play an aug4th AAAND an add 9th?! Did you keep your name anonymous possibly because your name is WOLFGANG FUCKING AMADEUS MOZART?? (or are you just Chris Martin trying to stick up for yourself? that would at least explain owning all the official chord books…)
well i was just going to tell you that i was too lazy to make an account….but you got me. yes, i REALLY am fucking mozart. i’ve come back from the dead to tell you that the music you’re currently listening to is trite shit . i’m going to shove a clap your hands say yeah cd up your ass, since i heard they make great butt plugs.
FUCK ADAM CAGLEY!!!!!!
coldplay is not even close
and congratulations for owning all the coldplay tab books, and sorry for not being more clear
i was talking about arrangement, thats why i said get your pals together
oh and calling radiohead avante garde is way off…listen to like ecstatic sunshine if you want that
plus coldplay plays the same set list every show of their tour with like one or two variations
thats embarrassing for the “best band in the world”
what a joke
they mideswell be a boy band who lip syncs and doesn’t write their own music when they put on that kind of a show
Most bands, I think, draw from smaller pool of material for their live shows, and I think a lot of bands have one set list that works through their whole tour. If you play completely different music every night, how will rotating, road-only band members and lighting and sound guys keep up? And I’m not only talking about arena acts (although an arena show like Coldplay or – dare I make the comparison – Radiohead certainly comes with a huge assortment of stagehands and technical logistics that would make it a nightmare to play something new on a whim), but smaller, stereogum-friendly indie acts as well. Just this year I’ve seen Throw Me The Statue and John Vanderslice turn down audience requests from the stage because they simply haven’t rehearsed something. And I don’t hold it against these guys; that’s just the way it is.
That said, how many Coldplay shows have you been to, Kevin? I’ve seen them six times, and for the record, I’ve never seen the same set list twice. Of course they’ve always played In My Place, and they’ve closed with Fix You since X&Y came out. But I’ve seen them do new songs, and I’ve seen them omit hits like Yellow or The Scientist in favor of something they hadn’t played in a while like A Rush Of Blood to the Head or Green Eyes.
If you’re aiming to provoke, congratulations. But if you’re honestly trying to make an argument, man, pick your battles. I know the internet is free and un-policed, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t filter yourself and try not to contribute to the glut.
I thought the chorus to this song sounded rather close to Sam Roberts “Bridge to Nowhere”, the “I dont wanna breathe this chemical breeze no more.” part. Curiously close actually.
Nice Sam Robers catch there, thats pretty much as close as it gets. Though I would be surprised if Coldplay were influenced by a band like them, as rocking as they are, as theyre pretty straightforward and not really exploring any new territory. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ashamed to say Chemical City was one of my faves back then, but in terms of an influential band I’d say SRB is more influenced that influential. But who knows!
What? Coldplay does play the exact same setlist every show. I don’t want to get in the middle of this painfully predictable blog debate but whatever guy said that he has seen them six times and never seen the same setlist is just lying. They may have thrown in an extra song at some shows last tour like “KIngdom Come” but it was pretty much the same thing: Square One opener, In My Place encore and an overwhelming amount of white people watch Chris Martin “brilliantly informing us that the stars in the sky are in fact yellow”.
This thread is way off. Coldplay does not want to be Radiohead any more than any other band. People associate them with Radiohead because both started out as brit pop acts.
Coldplay really wants to be U2. The Eno production on this album is a dead giveaway (he has worked on every U2 album since The Unforgettable File), in addition to the fact that the last album had U2 written all over it.
Plus Chris Martin is becoming a bigger self righteous tool every day, like Bono.
Still not as good as U2, of course.

Omigosh what’s with the artwork? Delacroix so wants to be Radiohead.
Coldplay is such wussy, lifestyle music that only soccer moms listen to. I only listen to avant nearly unlistenable shit like the Shins, Belle and Sebastian, and the Smiths.
Coldplay and radiohead are two totally different bands. How can you compare them? They both good at what they do. You guys are like a bunch of kindergarteners fighting over whether the square or circle is better.
Circle, motherfucker!
Here’s something to ponder. If so many people on this website hate Coldplay – with such vehemence – why the F is this the most commented on story at Stereogum?
What’s with these expectations? Why the comments? If you truly hate something, you ignore it, you put it out of your head completely. Nobody’s listening to the new Nickleback song because they just don’t give a shit about the band… but Coldplay is different.
The fact is, no one commenting on here TRULY hates this band?
Indie hipsters WANT Coldplay to put something out that will give them a reason to say that they like their music, something that gives them indie cred… so shitheads can say, “I used to hate Coldplay, but then they put out ‘Viva la vida’ and they totally blew my mind and expectations.” Then these same people can put on the new MSTRKRFT remix of ?Violet Hill? and rock out at with their other frat-boy friendos while drinking keystone light and railing lines of coke in their nudie jeans.
Figuring out why the indie-kids have these expectations for Chris Martin and his buddies is what should be debated. Not how good or how bad their music is.
That being said, where’s my copy of A Rush of Blood… I’ve got some beirut to play… and Gulag Orkestar just doesn?t get me pumped up like ?The Scientist?.
P.S. Martin really lucked out that he was born with an English accent… that’s really the only thing that’s keeping this debate going.
so wait, no one can possibly say anything at all about something they hate? did i miss something? are ALL statements merely statements of adoration?
forgive me, but i don’t ignore things i hate; i rant about them. i ignore things that don’t spark any interest – positive or negative – in me at all. with coldplay, i thought they sounded fine for a while, but they easily became tiresome and redundant. the more popular they got, the more i heard them, and the more i started to dislike them. i think that it’s very possible to speak about things one doesn’t like.
… i just realized i hadn’t even gotten all the way through your post, which apparently only got more and more ridiculous. um, what kind of “hipsters” do coke, listen to coldplay, and belong to fraternities? what in the world are you talking about?
furthermore, one isn’t BORN with a particular accent. are you trying to say that if an russian couple had a child then dropped him/her off in america, the baby, surrounded by english-speaking people, would speak russian?
Here’s something to ponder. If so many people on this website hate Coldplay – with such vehemence – why the F is this the most commented on story at Stereogum?

Nobody’s listening to the new Nickleback song because they just don’t give a shit about the band… but Coldplay is different. People go out of their way to hear the new Coldplay song… this is not the case for someone… say… like… Good Charlotte (yikes, that might be the first time they’ve been mentioned here).
The fact is, no one commenting on here TRULY hates this band?

I think this bodes very well for the new album. Tonally interesting, and the range he uses sounds much more fragile and tender than his voice normally is. I’m really excited to hear what they’ll do!
i’m still trying to figure out what radiohead has to do with this
A huge Radiohead fan for close to fifteen years, I have wanted to like Coldplay since their first record. I thought it had some good tunes, and I thought Rush of Blood was a bit better. In the end, one should realize you can’t deny good songs, and Coldplay has written several and utilized good production. I finally had the chance to see them a couple years ago though, and I have to say, it was horrible. Very boring, and very overpriced. They didn’t even play for 90 minutes, and used backing tracks the whole time that didn’t even appear self generated to mimic their studio efforts. I was very disappointed, and could not care less about this album.
anyone else think he sounds exactly like randy newman, or at least a randy newman impersonator, during the last word of each line in the verse?
i love the people that post comments about the song itself instead of getting involved in the lame argument. what are you tools THINKING?
I’m quite excited about this album… they just started sucking in everyway after A Rush, they got huge egos, played lame shows, put out a horrible album… but I’m giving this one a chance. This single is very promising, I love the cover art, and if it forget X&Y was ever made there’s quite a bit of hope.
this is the gayest song ever. coldplay as shitty cowboys, leaning too much on a crappy johnny cash influence. congratulations.
Last.
Everyone on this thread is so full of shit. None of you have done a decent job of backing up your lame-ass arguments. X & Y was at least a decent album.
Their new single sounds like the Alarm from the 90s or is it the ’80s?! Come one boys!
the melody for the first two lines sounds like ted leo’s “counting down the hours.” anyone else hear that?
anyway, i can’t wait to hear this song again the next time i have a dentist’s appointment.
not to get involved in any debate;
but the beauty of music is that two people can hear completely different things.
metal is a great example,
some people hear sweet beats and passionate screaming while others hear loud noise and mindless pig squeals.
the same concept applies with all music.
Perspective.
and now to actually say something about the new song.
to me half the problem of this new song is the mixing of it.
whatever they were trying to do with his voice this time around doesn’t work for him.
the song really has no dynamics, and that seems to be most of the peoples problems.
from My Perspective,
Fix you is brilliant song, because they were able to break out of their “musical dullness” (some would call it). That was also in my opinion, one of their best mixed songs. and i hear from everyone who has ever seen them that they are amazing live.
i believe this is most likely due to their lack of energy on their albums.
you can decide for yourself.
Like Violet a bit, but the intro is a bit too long. Also I agree with the other people who say that the album art is terrible, I like the painting, but it just doesn’t fit with a Coldplay album.

I really don’t mind this song, and since I have no allegiance to Coldplay, what I’m going to say next doesn’t really bother me all that much: Ok, listen to the Billy Joel song “The Stranger,” then listen to the 80′s hairband one-hit-wonder Kix’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” What you have is Coldplay’s “The Stranger not Closing his Eyes” aka “Violet Hll.” Sorry, but what a ripoff.
Phil Collins.
What an amazing song! It’s so mesmerizing I could hear over & over! Coldplay truly is a gift for our souls. Anyone picking it apart, figures and what do you do for a living? Yeah, I know you don’t even work! Zero talent and yet being a critic….and that’s a wrap folks!!!!!
