Zooey Deschanel hosted SNL over the weekend with musical guest Karmin (I won’t even get into that) and overall, she did a pretty nice job. The show featured Nasim Pedrad’s M.I.A. impression for a parody episode of Piers Morgan Tonight investigating the Super Bowl Halftime “scandal” as well as Abby Elliot’s own Zooey Deschanel impression for “Bein’ Quirky With Zooey Deschanel.” Watch the sketches below.

I know we get all excited when we hear Bon Iver and Sleigh Bells are getting musical guest slots on SNL, but after Lana-gate and whoever these Karmin people are (I had to look them up, never in my life heard of them and made the mistake of watching some of their performance — They kind of look like a parody of Sleigh Bells, especially the guy half of the “band”) it makes you humbly aware that it’s not entirely a huge honor anymore. Seems to me whoever is doing the bookings is more concerned with getting the “first” on these bands and not so much whether their worth the TV time. Then again, for every Radiohead booking, there’s an Ashlee Simpson or Silverchair appearance.
You’d think they’d book a better musical guest, too, seeing the host has more music-making talent.
Karmin got internet-famous by “rapping” popular songs. She’s got more talent than Deschanel, but she uses it in just horrifying ways.
silverchair weren’t THAT bad man
Yeah, I had the same thought about Sleigh Bells when watching Karmin’s “I Told You So” performance. Yiiikes.
And for a moment there I was almost like “Boston represent!” (I’m pretty sure they’re from here), but then I remembered a little more about who they were… : |

I pushed it through. WordPress will hold any comment will more than one link in the moderation queue, FYI.
Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarification. Sorry I didn’t reply sooner, I forgot.
The girl playing Olsen actually looked a lot more like Zooey than the other girl. Blue eyes necessary
umm…
Karmin was terrible. It would have made much more sense to have She & Him fill that slot since half the band was already hosting.
The Bein’ Quirky sketch was by far the best sketch of the episode.
M.I.A. is the coolest. all I gots t’say.
Also, how great was that Nic Cage bit?
“Pretty great!” – Everybody.
Karmin was OK. Not amazing, but I’ve definitely heard worse music from “cooler” bands. I’d rather listen to this than She & Him, honestly.
