Today, my former employers over at Pitchfork announced the initial lineup for this summer’s Pitchfork Music Festival, which comes to Chicago’s Union Park 7/13-15. Every year, Pitchfork announces all the bands at the festival in a few different installments, so this isn’t the complete lineup, but here’s who the festival has lined up already: Vampire Weekend, Feist, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hot Chip, AraabMuzik, ASAP Rocky, the Field, Liturgy, Kendrick Lamar, Grimes, Cloud Nothings, Tim Hecker, and Willis Earl Beal. Some of the bands, like Vampire Weekend and the Field, have played the festival before, but most of them are new to it. And as someone who’s been to every one of these things, it looks like the beginnings of a strong, deep bill. But what do you guys think?

What the hell is the point is seeing Tim Hecker at an outdoor festival?
same with willis earl beal. confused…
last year’s festival filled out nicely though so we’ll see
As much as I think the lineup is gonna be great, until Shabazz Palaces is confirmed I don’t think I would go.
They played last year, so I wouldn’t expect them this time around. Only person ever to do two in a row was Diplo, at the first two festivals, and I don’t think that’ll ever happen again.
Yeah Shabazz Palaces is like the Haley’s Comet of doing things.
shabazz is like jesus christ of music
Shabazz is Jesus Christ***
i feel shame
you’re wrong. kurt vile ’10 and ’11
I would be awesome to see The Field, Grimes, and Cloud Nothings, but I really need to see the rest of the line up before I would consider it. GY!BE is the only other group I would excited to see, and I will be seeing them at Coachella. On the positive side, limiting GY!BE to a 45 – 50 minute set is pretty ideal. I saw them a year ago and the show went on for 2.5 hours, which sounds amazing until you realize that you just listened to GY!BE for 2.5 hours and that is just a lot of fucking static to handle.
*It would be awesome. I should start editing my post before submitting them.
“until you realize that you just listened to GY!BE for 2.5 hours” — hahaha, very similar to my experience last year as well. I was also wayyyyyy too inebriated and drunk jesus gets antsy and distracted easily — not good at a slow-moving show like Godspeed.
Really hoping their Coachella performance can even it out for me. Pretty neat they’re on the Pitchfork line-up too.
Really wanna see The Field perform Looping State of Mind tracks… or at all. Never seen him and he’s one of my favorites. Really hoping this isn’t a one off show for The Field.
I see Grimes in two days ^_^
I’m doing Pitchfork for the first time this year (although only one day) and from what I see here I am really interested in seeing Grimes and AraabMuzik. Really looking forward to the rest of the bill
If you asked me who I would have predicted would be headlining, I would have guessed Grizzly Bear (new album) and Jeff Mangum. There was also a strong rumor that PJ Harvey would be headlining as well. If memory serves correct, they announce the headliners right off the bat, so does this mean Vampire Weekend, GSY!BE and Feist are them? It’s nice to see VW back in action (hopefully it means new album,) and the other two are solid, but when I look at how AnCo, TVOTR and Fleet Foxes topped last year’s bill, and Pavement, LCD and Modest Mouse the year before, I have to say the assumed headliners are a bit more polarizing.
And yes, as Jonas above stated, the lineup has great bands but not all of them translate well to an outdoor festival stage.
Constructive criticism: I would have titled this post “Poopfart Mucus Fartivenereal 2012 Ballcup”

Ugh. So far I’m very unimpressed. I suppose it at least gives me new stuff to listen to. I’ll get tickets again, because I get tickets every year, but hopefully this won’t be like 2008, where I think I went for about an hour.
Pretty indifferent to Kendrick Lamar and Willis Earl Beal, and while I like all the other acts quite a bit, I still feel this is kind of an underwhelming lineup. There’s no chance I will be able to go, anyways, though haha
disapointing lineup. pitchfork only chooses bands that it has BNM’d in that year so it can gain more clout.
If that is true, I would consider going to see Perfume Genius live.
i saw him open for beirut in november and he just seemed all around nervous and didn’t seem to know how to end each track, let alone start it. I’d pass on seeing him again, but the new album is great.
I know that they usually list the headliners in the first batch, but I would guess they haven’t all been announced yet.
I wonder if Pitchfork purposefully gives high album scores to artists they know they can get to their festival for sure..good lineup though
Shabazz Palaces are playing Lincoln Hall in April. I would suggest picking up tickets. 500 people vs. 10,000. Just saying.
