During the Q&A session that accompanied the Flaming Lips’ pop-up store/show thing in Los Angeles last week, Wayne “let it slip” that the band had joined forces with Stardeath And White Dwarfs to cover the entire Dark Side Of The Moon LP, featuring guest spots from Peaches and Henry Rollins. At their Friday morning stop at KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Coyne filled in the gaps a bit — Rollins is doing the voice overs, Peaches offers the “orgasmic” vocal on “The Great Gig In The Sky” — before performing the ’73 classic’s closing piece, “Eclipse.” Skip to 28:30 to hear some of the project’s backstory and that song, or watch the whole thing for performances of “Watching the Planets,” “Convinced of the Hex,” and “I Can Be A Frog.” Wayne does the Rollins bit (“There’s no dark side of the moon really…”), admittedly sounding more like Jimmy Stewart than a Black Flag singer, using lyrics sheets to remind himself of Roger Waters’s lyrics. After that, you get “Enthusiasm For Life Defeats Existential Fear.”
Embryonic is out, and the Lips’ take on Dark Side Of The Moon will be out one day.

Underwhelming.
lame. . . i love the flaming lips and Dark Side might be my favourite record….. . .. this idea is HORRIBLE
weak
Whatever, I’ll give it a listen when it comes out. And I’ll probably enjoy it. Then I’ll never listen to it again except maybe as a novelty.
It’s not like anyone who reads this blog would even imagine spending money on it anyway.
I’m personally pretty excited to hear Peaches sing Great Gig in the Sky.
eh.
why hate on this? it’s just a fun novelty thing. it’s not supposed to be them trying to make a superior Dark Side or anything.
Just awful. Love the Lips, but really? Wayne doesn’t know the words to Eclipse? Who doesn’t know the words to Eclipse. Phish covered Dark Side back in ’98 and it was awesome. Whole album, live, cover to cover. Check that out.
I’m pretty sure this is just something they did for fun, so try not to get too worked up. Would you prefer it if Nickleback covered it? I think not.
Bands love doing covers because it’s fun, not because they think they’ll have a top 10 Billboard hit.
I’m going to listen to it and probably enjoy it. If anyone can cover Dark Side of the Moon it’s the Flaming Lips. Give it a chance and save your judgments until you’ve heard the entire thing!
Lame. Hearing “Eclipse” without “Brain Damage” as a lead-in is like hearing “Living Loving Maid” without “Heartbreaker,” “We Are the Champions” without “We Will Rock You,” “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2″ without “The Happiest Days or Our Lives,” or “I Got You (At the End of the Century)” without “Red-eyed and Blue.” There’s now way Roger Waters is OK with this.
pretty boring… they could really do better. pink floyd’s version is so layered and interesting… this seems pale.
I hope their final version is more grand than this one.
I actually watched the whole video.. eclipse was certainly the most underwhelming part. However, He explains that “someone he can’t quite yet reveal” (paraphrasing) asked them to cover an album of their choice and they chose Dark Side… and asked Rollins and Peaches to collaborate. It’s all in good fun.., fun for the band and fun for the fans. Nothing more.
No need to hate!!
That said.. I’m 3 songs into Embryonic as I type this… wish me luck
I think this is rad! Why not have a little fun covering an album? I am sure beck is behind it with the VU covers album he did.
I’m sure this will be good. It’s just one band paying tribute to another band in their own style.
Not about comparing it to the original as this is something different in its own approach.
I don’t understand why people are booing this.
was anyone at the LIps show at Bonnaroo 2003??…late night Dark Side interlude…that was pretty friggin’ awesome
I was at Bonnaroo ’03 but unfortunately I missed the Flaming Lips show : (
I think this is the best thing to happen in all of my days, to listen to this album covered by my favorite band is an amazing thing… But to see it live, following their New Years show.. Now that is Epic!! You suckers can hate if you want but I will be at the show in sheer amazement and in celebration of this amazing moment.
