While team Stereogum was otherwise engaged in the Studio, photographer Natasha Ryan headed downtown to capture the sights at LPR last night. Bradford Cox celebrated his album release day with openers the Selmanaires as his backing band, but as we’ve seen in the past, he’s most compelling when he strips things down and handles Logos on his own. It’s the appropriate presentation for a project born alone in a bedroom. He, in turn, via humor and disarming honesty, can make even a packed Music Hall Of Williamsburg feel like that intimate personal space. As for Broadcast’s triumphant return, Trish Keenan and James Cargill played in complete darkness with various projections: It took some time for them to dig into recognizable pieces, as if they were doing My Bloody Valentine’s thing in reverse.

Broadcast was good, but a little underwhelming. The visual aspect of their performance relied solely on their mod psychedelic projections which where awesome, but I wished they were more involved. At some point I was hoping Trish would come bouncing across the stage singing in front of the projections, but they just stood off to the side the entire time. Their set was short too. That being said I would see them again.

broadcast was far too avant garde. i only recognized two songs, despite owning 3 albums. the patterned background was cool, but couldn’t save the show. the vocal effects on her mic were so cheap sounding and made her lovely voice sound terrible and low grade. i was sad, because i was so looking forward to finally seeing them. i think the last time i “saw” them was in 2000 when they played a satellite broadcast for capitol at CMJ…i think?
