More people can identify Mike Patton than they can Wolfmother. I love how some people think just because Patton’s not in a high-profile band that he isn’t as famous as Wolfmother.
Go to any college campus and survey all the kids you can find–most of them will probably not only know Patton over Wolfmother, they can tell you all about his side projects and his work with John Zorn.

i’d like to tell you all about my new band peeping wolf. we are like a cross between black sabbath and faith no more. actually, we sound more like wolf mother with mike patton-like vocals. our main goal is to bring the fans of wolfmother and mike patton together. thus, forcing everyone to rate us favorably if anyone happens to take a poll about us on a college campus. we also hope to one day play at lollapalooza. i think we will be a relevant band for years to come.
I’m not the biggest fan of Wolfmother. But at the same time, as far as “the kids” are concerned, I’d rather that’s what they get into than some horrible nu-emo garbage. Listening to Wolfmother would likely lead a young, impressionable music fan down an influence trail that would eventually point to Sabbath and Zeppelin. But what would listening to Panic at the Disco or My Chemical Romance lead to? What informs the sound of that sort of band other than similar bland, mall-punk crap?

This is seriously silly stuff. Comparing these two acts is like comparing Madonna with Britney Spears. One has an on-going career, influences genres and fans, constantly re-invents him/her-self and has been in the business for years. Not to mention running a label, collaborating and recording with other hugely influential artists spanning from all genres and seemingly not giving a shit what any one thinks in the process. To say that the ?kids? of today don?t know who Mike Patton is, is both irrelevant and bares little weight in ones artistic merit. Half the bands people mention on this board are unknowns in the big scheme of things. The day that I, or any of you for that matter, base tastes, interests and validity on numbers is the day you are lying to yourself and everyone else. If this is going to be based on something as shallow as popularity well it ends up being the same result anyway since one artist has sold millions of records in one incarnation or another while the other is new to the game. I remember seeing Faith No More, before their big “hit” open for the RHCP (in their first incarnation) at the Orpheum in Boston. They closed their set with not one, but two Black Sabbath covers.
Don’t know Wolfmother; don’t follow Patton’s career. And while I tend to agree we with him, it’s not like he was always on the vanguard.
People who only mention Faith No More need to do their research. Even disregarding Pattons numerous other projects, FNM’s Angel Dust still blows away Wolfmother.

Faith No More, at one time, was on top of the world.
They could have done what RHCP did, and sell out after they got popular, but FNM did the exact opposite, and made an album that was way ahead of it’s time.

I’d never heard of Wolfmother before I saw this, so I can’t really talk about them, but from what I heard an infant crying> Wolfmother.
Patton turned down INXS when they asked him to be their singer.

Patton turned down Korn when they asked Peeping Tom to play the Family Values tour.

Reducing Mike Patton to his work with Faith No More is like thinking of Radiohead as the band that did “Creep.” Sure, he may not have had huge commercial success with his later stuff, but it’s always challenging, new music.

This bitchiness sounds like high school, when the debate was whether Iron Maiden kicked Judas Priest’s ass, or if AC/DC would beat the snot out of Ozzy. I haven’t heard Wolfmother, nor am I really jonesing to. Peeping Tom is disappointing, primarily because that was the running title for the Patton / Zorn collaboration. This ain’t that.
But Faith No More was more than the progenitor of nu-metal, Tomahawk is good stuff and Fantomas is really incredible in the field of experimental rock. I give Patton credibility points overall. Does his opinion ultimately influence me? Not really. Neither do the endless debates over who “rock” and who “suck”. Hollow dismissal means very little without some factual claim support.

Also, what’s with the hate for FNM? Patton is largely responsible for their huge maturation between The Real Thing and Angel Dust. As for Mr. Bungle, they were incredible, end of story.

Wolfmother just sounds like a group that wants to play heavy and hard and get laid at the end of the night by many hot chicks. They are sexual, evil, doomy and nostalgic.
Fuck any of you, Mike Patton included, that spew cynicism just to try and prove to yourself you’re not trendy and you’re some kind of musical conniseur. If he wants to sell records, reunite Faith No More. Otherwise he should keep making obscure, progressive music and those of us who don’t read Rolling Stone or Spin or watch MTV will support him because he is a musical genius. And then those of us who just want to rock sometimes will also support Wolfmother and Jack White and respect you if you don’t.
Hey I’m not a Wolfmother fan but they sound good. Of course it sounds like classic rock Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath, but who cares since rock has been dead for how many years now? Better than nothing. The music channels don’t know what to play so all they do is play hip-hop. And the rock stations don’t know what new stuff to play either so they keep playing old stuff like Nirvana or whatever. My gripe with Wolfmother is the singer’s appearance and the video they made for their hit single. Does he really think he’s in the 70′s? Does he really think it looks cool?
Wolfmother probably isn’t even aware Mike Patton still exists so it doesn’t matter. No one cares. He can say whatever he wants, he has been lost into obscurity. If you told Wolfmother “hey the former lead singer of Faith No More Mike Patton dissed you on tv” they would probably get offended but probably wouldn’t even know that he makes music 1,000 times worst than them now. They’d probably go “who the hell is he to criticize us!!”. In the clip Mike Patton says they suck almost like he’s still in a top band like Faith No More. Not like he’s one of the worst artists the world has ever seen. Ok, one of the worst artists that used to be in a great band the world has ever seen. I don’t know if that clip showed up on tv (is that “thee” G4 channel, I didn’t know they covered music).
Patton deserves to be in the Guiness Book of World Records for how many collaborations he’s been in and bad unlistenable music he’s made. The only reason he even gets an interview is because he was once the singer for Faith No More. Like FNM’s drummer Mike Bordin once said “he can collaborate with all the bands he wants, but he will always be known as the former lead singer of Faith No More”. hahaha

When I look at that picture of Mike Patton at the top of this page with him poining at the camera (that’s where he’s saying “Wolfmother you suck”), I can’t help to think right after that he should’ve pointed to himself and said “and I suck even worse”.
Faith no More isn’t the only reason Mike Patton’s remembered…Hell, this was taken at lalafuckingpalooza, and what band was featured playing there? None other than Peeping Tom. Which, by the way, has Mr. Patton as the singer.
I’m SURE you’re not even comparing Peeping Tom with Faith No More. Lalapalooza hasn’t had anybody good to play there in a very long time so nowadays they just pick any bands from the street they can find and ask em if they want to play. Most of them say “NO, hell no”. I’ll admit Peeping Tom isn’t that terribly bad compared to the other sh*t he’s made for years, but he was probably offered a place in the line-up because he used to be in Faith No More is somewhat known, and also known for acting whacky sometimes which makes for a good show. You still can’t say Mike Patton is remembered or known cause of Peeping Tom. He will always be remembered cause of Faith No More, just like FNM’s drummer Mike Bordin said. He’s lucky he was in Faith No More or else his Peeping Tom would only be featured on a poster in front of a toilet in the bathroom at Lalapalooza. I hear Mike Patton cruises the streets at Sunset Blvd. nowadays with a sign saying “Will play music for food” lol

Actually he’s been known to go upstage and do standup. I don’t know how much but from the interviews I’ve read there were two occasions. He of course has to give the bar owner a bl*wjob and then he gets the go ahead, something he’s said he doesn’t mind doing, and rather enjoys.
Dissing a band in front of your friends is fine but on national tv? He must want some controversy for his sh*tty Peeping Tom. I don’t know if this aired on tv but it’s not cool. Plus these guys are playing with him right there at Lalapalooza. Not cool. For those of you who think that Wolfmother rip off BS and Zep, you’d be right.
But wakey wakey and open your ears kids, everything is influenced by something else, nothing is original. At least Mike Patton left Faith No More at its peak to become more left of centre and out of the limelight, he likes it that way.
And as for Wolfmother, I saw them play here in Sydney at one of their first gigs ever, in this tiny club and they rocked. Even if the album is overproduced shite. But good luck to em, its all about selling albums and screwing groupies.
Each to their own I say. Personal taste is something that offers us the opportunity to listen to music we like, and allows new bands to form and music to be born and live.
