Korn announced the release of their MTV Unplugged album back in November, but we had no idea they were angling for our hearts and minds by covering The Cure (with Robert!) and covering Radiohead. Via FMQB:
Recorded in New York on December 9, the Unplugged disc features appearances by Amy Lee of Evanescence and Robert Smith of The Cure. Lee contributes to the performance of “Freak On A Leash” and Smith appears on a version of his own “In Between Days.” KoRn also covered Radiohead’s “Creep” for the disc, which will be released on February 20. The Unplugged special is slated to debut online first on February 10, then on MTV on February 17.
Sorry Korn, still not enough; we blame you for music in the late ’90s. Jonathan Davis and Robert Smith together, we could see that; Robert likes Peen Wentz, after all. But oh man that “Creep” is gonna be great! “‘Cause I’m a … DHOOM-da-dha-DHOOM-da-dha-EEMA.” Get psyched.

Fitting that Radiohead has basically disowned “Creep”, no?

Don’t get me wrong. “Creep” is a good song but when it’s a sad choice of a Radiohead cover. For god’s sake, if you can’t swallow the new Radiohead-as-radio-friendly-Autechre [and it's not my cuppa tea], do something off OK Computer. But “Creep”? What the hell are you doing here??

rsl, you have to be aware that this is korn and that them doing say subterranean homesick alien would be a huge mistake since it wouldn’t work with their style of music whereas creep lyrically could be a korn song- not that I’m insulting the lyrical quality of radiohead songs b/c that would be a ridiculous statement.

Not that Korn had anything important to say, but this is downright pathetic. Why don’t they just work the glory holes down at the local fuck book store?
Way back when, I worked for a college radio station and interviewed Korn during their first major label tour. When I asked them the prerequisite “influences” question, they rambled off bands like Duran Duran and My Bloody Valentine (and Dr. Dre). They had basically never heard of the bands they were touring with. I’m not sure how much truth there is to this, but they seemed genuine, and were able to answer some trivial questions about those bands. Oh, and they use Tom’s Of Maine toothpaste.
On a side note — who knew that unplugged was still around? Plugged (?) versions of these songs would be torture enough. Ugh, I pray they don’t slow down the tempo of creep and sing with their eyes closed. Korn emoting makes me throw up in my mouth.
Is it just me, or does it seem like EVERYONE’s hate for Korn stems from the bands they spawned rather than from their music itself? Personally, I still think everything up to and including Follow the Leader is pretty classic as far as metal is concerned. Give it 10-15 years and I suspect history will validate me.
The only question in my mind is whether their butchering of Creep will be more or less hilarious than anything on Twisted Sister’s christmas album.

No. My hate for Korn stems from the hillbilly roommate I was forced to live with my freshman year of college. I remember one song in particular, I think it was called “Faggot”. And the hick thought the song was about killing godless queers. He would play it on repeat and at maximum volume as some sort of defense sheild against me and my “fudgepacker friends”.
Say what you will about what Korn has become, but few songs are as cathartic after a bad day as Ball Tongue.

Is it at all possible for anybody or any band to cover a Radiohead song and it NOT be Creep?
I hope Robert Smith didn’t think that appearing with Korn provided some sort of relevance to new, young, hip audiences.

Korn and Evenesence? Preforming the most trite Radiohead song conceivable? This is history in the making.
Well it makes me laugh really. Basically whats happening is the people who loved Korn in the 90′s have now grown up in their years and are into new stuff, its natural… now they’re embarrased to admit they were ever fans, because its not cool to do so…music is a bit like a fashion really; what goes around comes around. Admitedly, Korn arent the same since Head left, and on their last album they pretty much sold themselves out…but then look at Metallica, they will reinvent themselves…. these ‘past fans’ who now slate them off…reminds me of people who keep going on about gays, saying how much they hate them..and then turn out to be gays themselves.
Music isn’t a fashion to the people who are born with rythmn…

Korn and the Cure share a common producer, Ross Robinson.. he’s really branched out. He is now doing indie bands like Repeater ( http://www.myspace.com/repeaterband ) and trying to get the ‘new new new wave’ out there like he did to the ‘Nu metal’.
