The rate at which school kids are covering Yellow House jam “Knife” is alarming; a couple of months ago it was just some kids down in Atlanta, and now the amount of student cover love has gone and doubled courtesy of this a cappella version of the song, by The Carleton Singing Knights of Carleton College in Northfield, MN. (Adjust your woofer settings for the bass in the “Can’t you feel the knife” section.)
So nice they did it twice (this time as some street clothed final exam procrastination). We’ve always enjoyed us some good indie rock a cappella, and “Knife”‘s doo-wop swing makes it an obvious candidate for the unaccompanied vocal treatment. Now that school’s almost out, hear any good indierockapella this semester?

I like the back section of the choir singing the counterpoint, “Slow news day, folks?”

Knowing the Carls (I went to the other college in that town) they probably were very pleased and there was much patting on the back down at the Cow after these performances.
Color me not impressed.
The Limestones ftw.
my high school’s a capella group did a pretty sweet version of such great heights. plus they did the numa song.
word is they might attempt jeff buckley’s grace.
you forgot their cover of Patrik Wolf!
ooh these are kind of old but good:

I am pretty sure that Grizzly Bear themself did a pretty good acapella version of the song…
I am pretty sure that Grizzly Bear themself did a pretty good acapella version of the song…
oh i just realized chicago was done by them too. score!

fucking awesome.
If you all think “Knife” is interesting you should see these same guys do “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”.
The video is shitty, and I still can’t decide if I like this one or not but here it is:

my vocal jazz group did chicago woo
I think I sense some St. Olaf jealousy emanating from Sarah up there…
Is that dude on the extreme left holding a phone?
I want to see a high school marching band do a version of Sufjan’s No Man’s Land.
I’ll admit I’m jealous of the song choice(s), Kyle.
But I won’t conceed on my belief that Olaf has the upper hand with the vocal quality.
Choral quality, definitely, but you’ve got nothing on the Knights. The Limestones sit as nicely with me and most rational listeners as their namesake would with some hydrchloric acid.
Super-bonus nerd points go to Olaf Sucks!
