Porn auditions serve as the sleazy set-up for Rilo Kiley’s 18+ clip from Under The Blacklight, out 8/21. Hit themoneymake.com, wait out nine minutes of vérité, and you’ll be rewarded with a proper music video for “The Moneymaker.” Bluer than “Portions Of Foxes,” sure, but no more hardcore than most of what you see on MTV these days, so we’re giving this clip a SFW! Props to camp Rilo for the funky slap bass/slinky riff combo, and for enabling the SEO-friendly post title.

After the jump we visit Jenny Lewis’s hat collection circa 1991. Wholesome!

UPDATE: Just the music video part:

  1. How many responses of “Wait, what??” will that subject header get?

  2. Julie  |   Posted on Jul 1st, 2007

    …I really like the song.

  3. This is so fucking terrible, my god.

It’s like Maroon 5 meets grunge. What happened?

  4. I like the song, Faye Runaway, what a great porn name…

  5. The Other Matthew  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

I usually hate Rilo Kiley. I like this. Not a lot, but I like it.

  6. jljames  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Hmm. Not sure why they’ve tried to drop the cutesy and go sexy. I don’t think it works.

  7. I think they tried to “drop the cutesy and go sexy” because somebody at their label realized that “indie” yuppie men are obsessed with Jenny Lewis’s canz.

  8. What a horrendous song. Sounds like a bad Joan Jett outtake.

  9. Mike  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Could Jenny Lewis get any more phony? Her whole country thing was phony, this whole funk thing is phony. I don’t for a second believe a thing she does.

  10. after basically staying within the same sonic palette for the last three albums, it’s great that rk is doing something so different. it’s not a masterpiece, but i give them credit for exploring new territory. though the interviews with the porn stars was more interesting than the music video.

  11. Oh GOD, that Teen Set video was so horrible.
“Without the planet, we wouldn’t be here.” Way to go, Jenny!

  12. Wow. I hope this is a joke. Jenny, please tell me this is a joke.

  13. annie onymous  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

    interesting.

the song was ok…it wasnt anything special but it was good. itll be interesting to hear the rest of the album now and hear what kind of a feel we get.

i skipped past all the porn star interviews to the video and the video was…also…interesting. but one thing is for sure…jenny still looked smokin’.

  14. Ethan  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

    wtf? bad bad bad!

  15. Paul  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Finally, a Rilo Kiley song I can wrap my head around. The rest of their catalogue has been completely flat and boring.

  16. chris  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

    Okay, for real, people?

That was possibly the worst song I’ve ever heard. What happened to this band?????

  17. Sean  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Wow. I’m actually a big RK fan, and this is absolutely horrible. What in the hell? The last album had such great lyrics and country twang, and now this? Barf. I couldn’t even watch it all.

  18. i love Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis and i pretty much will. but i’ll be honest, if this wasn’t RK, i wouldn’t give a shit about the song. i mean wtf at the lyrics?!

and the video…i don’t care about some pornstars breakthrough. but whatever. hopefully the rest of the songs are a lot better than this.

  19. Alex  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Did anybody else notice that the heavy part lifts the chorus melody from “JukeBox Hero” almost note for note?

  20. “…and for enabling the SEO-friendly post title.”

What does SEO stand for? [guesses] Search engine optimizer?

  21. Al Knut  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

You guys are aware this song is ironic right? It compares writing a hit song to the porn industry. Believe it or not Rilo Kiley isn’t adopting a new stage persona.

  22. chris  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

“Ironic” is not the right word for this.

  23. Ju Bean  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Slightly vapid…yes, bad song…not at all.

Rilo Kiley has three albums under their belt, if they want to change stylistically, especially after giving their fans more of the same, they’re entitled to do so.

  24. Absolutely fucking putrid. Give me “Plane Crash In C” over this crap anyday.

  25. Le Beouf  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

    The video is too long.

The song is not short enough.

  26. I like RK and Jenny Lewis, but man that was so bad.

  27. i dont even know what to say about this, just dreadful.

  28. mf McNutt  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Excellent screen grab from that truly awful video — She looks like a blow-up doll.

  29. benazona  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Alright, that guitar riff is almost a note for note rip off of “Moving in Stereo” by The Cars.

The Wizard was a rad movie though.

  30. Freddy  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

The song was ok until the weak money shot chorus. Don’t build that long unless you have a pay-off. I think I like the twinned guitar sound.

Sounds like they were going for a spiky funk sound like the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Phenomena.”

Wow, was that some lossy audio… hard to sell a song when it sounds that bad.

Ex-child star rocker identifying with porn noobs? Didn’t see that coming…

  31. chris  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

hey am I the only one who thinks the hook sounds exactly like “Jukebox Hero” by Foreigner???? Foreigner for Christ’s Sake!!!

  32. raklosen  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

i like how at the end of the 1991 video she goes from jumping on the trampoline with her mom, to telling all of her young admirers to recycle more. hot AND ahead of her time way back in ’91!

  33. benj  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

why did anyone like rilo kiley? one of the worst bands i’ve heard in years. i had no idea she had lg. boobs, never seen a pic. but it certainly doesn’t help her music suck less…

  34. Is this the same band that did The Frug?

  35. Chris  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

How exactly is this safe for work? I know there’s no actual nudity or anything, but if any regular boss walked by your computer playing this, it wouldn’t matter what he *didn’t* see.

    NSFW!!!

  36. ^Yes

  37. I knew that guitar line was familiar from somewhere. Also, are the “Ah ah aahhs” a conscious homage to Led Zeppelin?

  38. > Excellent screen grab from that truly
    > awful video — She looks like a blow-up doll.

Thanks. It took me like 20 minutes. :)

    > How exactly is this safe for work? I know
    > there’s no actual nudity or anything, but
    > if any regular boss walked by your
    > computer playing this, it wouldn’t matter
    > what he *didn’t* see.

OK, fair enough. I figured if you’re watching the post-interview part, 98% of it features a band performing so it’s clear it’s a music video. But yeah, it’s not Pancake Mountain or anything.

  39. To the guy that made the comment about Jenny Lewis being phony:

What the f u c k are you talking about? Does she have to have been born in a shotgun shack and married to her brother to sing country music? Does she have to be from the south? What exactly makes her phony? Maybe you can explain what kind of music she should be playing.

Authenticity expectation to have for music. The term means something different to everyone. How about judging music by whether it’s good or not. Granted this is subjective as well, but at least it’s an attempt to rate something based on quality. Authenticity and quality are not causally related.

A songwriter is still a writer. Would you ever think of calling Steven King inauthentic if he wrote a novel that wasn’t in the horror genre?

  40. Sorry, in the third paragraph i meant to say “Authenticity is a bad expectation to have for music.”

  41. is it just coincidence that there’s an ad for this video and single on the right side of this page?

    just wondering.

  42. bull-fucking-shit

but I’m still in love with jenny lewis

  43. dannygutters  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

SJ: Gillian Welch is currently the most authentic artist in country and she’s from pitsburg. So you’re right.

  44. andy  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Wow. I mean, I thought I’d left all my punkish “Sell-out” pretension behind, but, ummm, damn. I mean it’s not like this band was ever THAT deep, but still, wow…

  45. I heart Jenny forever. That’s all I have to say.

    DwD

  46. Jeff  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

I feel stupider for having read the majority of the comments. Pricks

  47. Erin  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Song was OK, I like the new sound, but jeez couldn’t they have picked a better-looking guy to be in the “porno?” Like the drummer for instance… :)

  48. I hope there is some sort of satire, tongue-in-cheek, spoof going on with this song that
    I’m not privy to.
please tell me there’s more to this than meets the eye!?!?

If Rilo Kiley are being serious, then I’m just disappointed.

If this weren’t RK I wouldn’t have even considered trying to like it.

  49. christian  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

first off to paul: there is nothing “flat” about RK. DAMN. [sorry i had to go there].

second of all: IS THIS A JOKE!?!?!?!

they can make a statement without shitty genre hopping. if they are trying to be ironic, it was a bad, bad move.

first the decemberists record “a perfect crime” and now this!?! what is going on people?!?!

it’s like with jenny lewis’ solo career and the elected taking off a bit, nobody cares about RK anymore so they just screw around…and this happens…so help me if this blows up and becomes the next big thing….i don’t know…this is just a disaster.

  50. Sorry to sound like an optimist. It’s so unlike me. But frankly, it’s one song and Rilo Kiley’s track record is pretty solid. It strikes me like that “Ghost Of You Lingers” track from the new Spoon strikes me: that is is not necessarily emblematic of the entire recording.

    And I still heart Jenny.

  51. seth  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

i don’t mind the song at all.

however, jenny lewis in that video = when your mum has a dinner party and her drunk friends hit on you.

  52. Dirk Diggler  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

I’d love to show her my big gun.

  53. trashcansanta  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

It doesn’t sound like Led Zeppelin. It doesn’t sound like Steppenwolf (go listen to the damn song before you post again). It doesn’t really sound that much like the cars (considering the instrumentation and tempo change). It’s just a mediocre single that is pretty clearly tongue-in-cheek.

Seth, if your mom has friends that look like Jenny Lewis and get drunk and hit on you, I’m moving in.

  54. Stephan Wolfe  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Who said anything about Steppenwolf? There have been two mentions of Foreigner (“Juke Box Hero”).

  55. trashcansanta  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

The sad part is that you had ten minutes to post that before my internet could even reload the page for me. Hooray, crappy wireless.

My bad. Still, It doesn’t sound like Foreigner. Not sure where Steppenwolf came from. You must be a fan.

  56. dave  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

Sounds like David Bowie’s “Fame.” Only much shittier.

  57. deliri  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

This band is wildly over-hyped. I actually enjoyed “It’s a Hit” but that album’s remaining songs were God awful. This is no different. A pile of shit and a bad publicity stunt.

  58. janit  |   Posted on Jul 3rd, 2007

most of her fans are Yupsters and Grupsters. This is a good fantasy video for them.

  59. Dolly  |   Posted on Jul 3rd, 2007

It really, really does sound like a Maroon 5 song. Except with corny “edgy” Courtney Love lyrics. “Show them your moneymaker”?

  60. Janea  |   Posted on Jul 3rd, 2007

i watched the first 2 minutes of the awful video interviews, skipped ahead to the music and wasn’t too disappointed. i just wish they wouldn’t try so hard to be “different.” i’m a rk’er for life though.

  61. I’m all for lyrical minimalism, if it’s less tedious and more intelligent than this song. But it’s better than any other Rilo Kiley song I’ve ever heard.

    >Does she have to have been born in a shotgun shack >and married to her brother to sing country music?

No, but the publicity would be better if her 13-year-old cousin were involved somehow…

  62. Ashley  |   Posted on Jul 3rd, 2007

This is so disappointing. Compared to The Execution of All Things…this just breaks my heart.

But it’ll probably grow on me, I guess…who knows.

  63. Sommer  |   Posted on Jul 4th, 2007

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

  64. nicole  |   Posted on Jul 4th, 2007

Definitely a different sound coming from RK, but I love it. Not a huge fan of the actual video, but the song is catchy. I have all their records, and although this is not one of my favorites, I’m definitely will still be listening intently.

  65. Steve Sanders  |   Posted on Jul 4th, 2007

Not a very good song, pretty trashy.

But an interesting concept for a video. I find the backstories of porn stars interesting.

  66. Steve Sanders's mom  |   Posted on Jul 5th, 2007

Bernie Sanders > Larry Sanders > Col. Sanders > Barry Sanders > Steve Sanders

  67. sounds like somebody decided to save the good songs for her next solo record if you ask me…

  68. Jonathan  |   Posted on Jul 6th, 2007

This new song AND video are incredible.

Sorry to all the bitter robots who were expecting RK to repeat themselves. This band and the individual members that make it up are on the right track – they’re learning how to re-invent themselves and write songs that will catch your attention and endure. Over the past few years, Jenny has showed us that she is a force to be reckoned with…I can easily see her going on into the ranks of female performers like Stevie Nicks, but with more to say with her lyrics.

Rock on, RK! Thanks for the many years of great music and best of luck with your new release!

  69. Isabella  |   Posted on Jul 6th, 2007

Ahaha. I can’t believe I just read all of those comments…

  70. susie q  |   Posted on Jul 6th, 2007

Screw the haters…the video and song are hot. Who doesn’t love funk and porn?

  71. i’m so glad that i never got into rilo kiley.
    cripes.

  72. As a casual fan of the band, I was pretty excited to see a new song, and the title intrigued me even more. And I love when bands reinvent themselves, but it should be a more gradual thing than this. They went from cutesy-indie-pop to cutesy-indie-pop-with-enough-country-to-make-it-sound-a-tad-different to grrl funk?!

The lyrics are dreadfully boring. There are thousands of better repeatable statements over “You’ve got the moneymaker.” The song subject is inventive, but only one piece of art was able to accurately capture the porn industry, and it was not this, it was Boogie Nights.

But Jenny Lewis is still “hot.”

  73. Frank Zappa said most people wouldn’t know good music if it came up and bit them on the ass. Those who put down this latest offering by RK have their head up their own ass, so they wouldn’t know if good music was biting it.

I’m not saying you have to like it. I’m just saying RK is the best thing since the Beatles, and if you can’t see that, grow up.

  74. You bunch of nerdy Fucktards!

What is with all the RiloKiley bashing here?

Sure you are entitled to your opinion, but why all the anger? Jenny Lewis is the hottest thing we indie music lovers have to show off (minus Bjork in a swan outfit) Why hate on the queen?

They are doing something different…if they did the same thing you would bash them for not “re-inventing” their sound!

Go have a drink. Get laid. And then write a comment. The Dr says so!

  75. RK can play what they want to play.
    You can not like it.
I hope they have fun playing it live and if they do…. it will be GREAT!
What if the insipid (simple?) sexuality of this first track sells an awesomely political and literate album?

  76. Methuselah  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2007

“They are doing something different”? This song sounds like a million other songs I heard back in the day on classic rock radio.

  77. sweeeet likkks  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2007

I do not like the song or the video, but I do think that it is neat that Jenny is playing the bass in it. Also, my band opened for the Elected last year and that Blake is a strange, strange man. Nice though.

  78. Peregrine  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2007

Haha, wow. Well, at least I can say I didn’t see this coming from Rilo Kiley. Other than that, the song is pretty forgetable. The “entertainers” and their insights in the video make it all worthwhile, though.

Honestly, I’m not going to judge the whole album on this one song. I enjoyed More Adventurous, so I’m going to wait till August until I pass judgement.

  79. anon  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2007

this is just… just really terrible.

  80. michael  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2007

It seems like she is channeling Karen O a bit, she looks great as well.

  81. hilariously God awful. it’s so funny to watch these guys and imagine what the hell is going on in their heads. “what’s semi-popular with the people that we wish were listening to our music this week? OK, let’s do that.”

  82. anon  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2007

this came on the radio the other day and i immediately changed the channel. now i know who to blame. so awful.

  83. krys  |   Posted on Jul 10th, 2007

I don’t want to be another one of those guys, but this is awful. I’m not sure exactly what rk was going for, but I don’t think they quite achieved it.

I bet this is gonna be one of those things they look back on and go wtf were we thinking…kinda like all those lifetime made for tv movies jenny did in the early 90s.

  84. that song is pretty good, but its just not really them
jenny lewis is still hot though

  85. the world already has one Yeah Yeah Yeahs – and I love them – that’s why we don’t need another one. Jenny Lewis’ voice is no match for Karen O’s when it comes to rock.

  86. eh, there about the same, but i still gotta go with jenny lewis

  87. k. gas  |   Posted on Jul 13th, 2007

I like how they used that shot of J.Lew with the nurses behind her, like the Watson twins in back of her on Rabbit Fur Coat.

This song, however, i do not like.

  88. Beth  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2007

This doesn’t have anywhere near the quality sound found on her previous CD. It sounds like a rush job… hope the rest is better.

  89. Fallon  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2007

I have to remain optimistic. It’s not a horrible song, but it’s not up there on Rilo Kiley standard. I miss the old Execution of All Things sound… or maybe even The Frug.

There’s still potential for a good CD, but it’s doubtful.

  90. haley  |   Posted on Aug 8th, 2007

Maybe they’re trying to generate more interest because it seems like the only people who like this song don’t like anything else by them. I think it’s just a mistake, though, there are so many things wrong with that song. “Silver Lining” gives me hope that the whole album isn’t like that, though!

  91. Jeffathome  |   Posted on Aug 19th, 2007

One: How many strippers will be taking their clothes off to this song this year? Two: How many of those patrons will stop the stripper after her dance and say “Yeah, you’ve got nice jugs, but what was that song? I gotta get that record!” I suppose the music industry is always looking for new marketing strategies.

  92. bozackthomas3  |   Posted on Jul 16th, 2008

maybe somebody’s mentioned this already, but that guitar riff is a ripoff of an 80s song that i cannot seem to remember. and it’s not the only one on the album. track five (i didn’t put the titles on my mp3 player since the album won’t be staying on long) opens with a very catchy guitar lick that is totally a ripoff of george harrison’s “my sweet lord.” (and yes, for you audiophiles, i know the story behind MSL)
maybe that’s why so much of this album sounds like i’ve heard it before. they watered down and recycled a bunch of old good stuff. i was looking forward to this rilo kiley release, but am disappointed. only a couple decent tunes, imo. her talking about smoking a guy in bed just isn’t enough to make me wanna keep it on my player.
