If you had a Tumblr page on Tuesday, your Dashboard was likely hijacked by 238 reblogs of the same announcement: somebody named JSTN launched a new site Muxtape, and it was totally going to change the way you discovered music. And you know what? It actually turned out to be pretty cool! In that functional yet streamlined sort of way: make a page and get your URL (username.muxtape.com), upload 12 tracks, sequence them how you like, and email said link to friends to demonstrate your superior taste turn them on to new stuff. It’s a basic idea done well. It’s mixtapes gone 2.0. Someone should tell Rob Sheffield his concept of love needs a redefinition.

Anyway as we get set for weekend nonsense, and as we’re pretty sure there’s still a few days before Muxtape is so over, we thought we’d make a call to y’all to post yours up in the comments. Maybe just as a way to suggest new bands, or to show us how much better your pirated collection of music is than the rest of ours. But if you have a competition in you, you’re too late: Catbird wins.

“Streaming” is simply downloading something and immediately deleting it. It’s a digital world, *EVERYTHING* you see/hear onscreen has been downloaded by your computer. And “Download” is just another word for copy, since it ends up on your computer and still remains on the server. So you see, the RIAA is a bunch of assholes trying to apply 19th century legislation to 21st century consumerism.
Don’t worry though, the industry is falling and with it the RIAA.

Interestingly, you can only post songs that don’t have any sort of protection code on them (ie. can’t include a song you bought from itunes) and you can’t post m4a’s either. it’s pure mp3 or nothin’. anyone know if this is going to change? amrit?
This makes perfect sense and for a couple reasons. They the file would not be stream able by others the same way the file isn’t playable if you send it to someone. Thought this would be obvious…
Hey Jenny I asked Justin Muxtape for you, and here’s what he offered:
“Part of it is a Flash limitation (they only just recently added AAC support with H.264, and I think it might only be for video) and it’s definitely not in the library I’ve been using. MP3s are still by far the dominant format, I think due in no small part to the fact that they’re so portable and open.”
So it doesn’t look like it’s changing anytime soon, jenny, but at least converting to MP3 in iTunes is nice and easy. Hope that helps!
