By all accounts, PJ’s crushing it in NYC this week. I didn’t think it necessary to see them so soon after their gripping three-hour set at Bonnaroo, but the Internet is making me realize I thought wrong: it’s certainly impressive to watch a band reach directly into the gut of 70,000 people on a farm, but witnessing crowd energy raised to rafter-shaking levels in MSG seems like its own brand of fucking unforgettable. Matthew went Tuesday night and testified to the crowd’s hysterics, and last night appears to have been no different. To make things a little more memorable, and to further the series of contemporary vets covering classic rock with classic rockers, last night Pearl Jam brought out Ace Frehely to cover KISS’s “Black Diamond.” Matt Cameron does most of the singing (Mike McCready gets in there a bit too), Ace does most of the shredding. Also, like the night before, C.J. Ramone was on hand for “I Believe In Miracles.” Here’s some more footage from last night, McCready soloing out of “Alive,” and then “Yellow Ledbetter.” I’m pretty sure the crowd likes it.
I’m sorry I missed that. Side note: I mentioned Chris Martin’s attendance at last night’s gig in this morning’s Coldplay post, and commenter grace6697 mentioned EdVed tooled on Coldplay’s free MSG gig? Anyone know exactly what he said? I hope for Chris Martin’s sake Eddie wasn’t actually poking fun, seeing as he’s one of Chris’s heroes and the guy is totally derailed by slams like that (he’s still smarting over the “you know how I know you’re gay” business, for one of many).

dude, pearl jam’s PR division is working OVERTIME.
I was hoping that they’d play NY Groove with Ace, but I’ll settle for Black Diamond. I was able to watch the second night’s show in the Ten Club seats, as opposed to up along the side the night before, and holy shit, my body was hurting from jump around and dancing so much. Long live Pearl Jam!

As a night one PJ attendee, I was XXXL disappointed to find myself w/ Liz Phair tix last night instead of giving PJ a second go.
But that being said, rumors of the “Guyville” shows mediocrity have either been greatly exaggerated, or she pulled it together for NY. It was a great show. Couldn’t have realistically expected more than she gave.
I was there last night, pretty close. PJ played “All Night” – b-side or whatever off of Lost Dogs. And then afterwards Eddie said “that’s right, we’re gonna play all night, this aint no free show”. I mean, he was clearly referring to Coldplay’s show, but he may not have known that it got blasted for being 1 hour long. I was actually sitting in the front row one section over from where he was sitting (in about the 2nd or third row, cant remember). I looked over to see the expression on his face right when Eddie said that but my view was obscured. He was rockin out pretty hard to even flow though, so he couldnt have been hurt that bad, haha.

edward likes to take his jabs, prolly cause he’s been unjustly shit on for years now, but the best is from the MSG DVD from a few years back. To paraphrase he welcomes out someone from Social D (could’ve been Ness) and says if it wasn’t for them PJ could’ve ended up sounding “LIke Good Charlotte or something”. I love Ed and his bottles of red funny juice.
Pearl Jam brought out a member or two from The Buzzcocks on the MSG DVD. What I thought was even better was saying that Good Charlotte sounds like what he imagines a shit popsicle would taste like. Amen Brother Eddie, Amen!
thx for the clarification. Its been a few yrs and many bong rips since I’ve watched it. Its funny, somehow Good Charlotte sucking always stays in my mind though.

It is a bummer to me that no one mentions that a) PJ having AFreley come out on stage is a bit of a FooF/JPage&JPJones thang which happened recently PLUS b) the Replacements (God bless ‘em!) did the best version of Black Diamond… and btw McCready’s singing in the intro is BRUTAL! Just go buy Let It Be (& w/o the new “bonus” crap!) & TURN IT UP!!!
ACE FREHLEY is the ruler. PJ is wise to give it up to the man, although it would have been better if they had played “Shock Me” or “Rocket Ride”. Still, glad to see PJ with the real deal, who is back on the scene and playing better than ever. I suggest everyone check out his recent live performances online, which show him at peak form. Can’t wait for his new disc!!! Congrats to the Jammers on 2 sold out nites at the legendary MSG, where I 1st saw KISS way back in 1977…

for what it’s worth, i was at pearl jam’s free show at irving plaza in 2008 where they played 21 songs. while it was well over an hour, it was at least 5 or 6 songs fewer than they played at every other show on that tour
