We first spoke about Brian Wilson’s new song cycle That Lucky Old Sun when he premiered it in London this past fall. Then we mentioned he was returning to Capitol and prepping a tour. Bringing it full circle, we have footage of Wilson talking about That Lucky Old Sun and singing some of his new songs, including the swoony “Midnight’s Another Day.” The last track, “Going Home,” seems like a stinker, but otherwise the new material sounds (like the Beach Boys) good.

Poignant. But if I had the opportunity to interview him, there’s no way I’d let the moment pass without asking about “Smart Girls.”

That Lucky Old Sun is out 9/2 on Capitol. You can catch Wilson on the road:

Most of them sound like stinkers to me other than “Can’t Wait Too Long” which is a Smile-era leftover. But, good for Brian.

I saw Lucky Old Sun performed in Sydney at the beginning of the year and thought the whole thing stunk. And he’s barely a performer any more, just a muppety man fronting a group of session musos who sound as boringly clinical as the David Letterman backing band.

    sounds amazing, love u Brian

  4. Seems like it might be decent. My only real complaint is the inclusion of “Can’t Wait Too Long.” Anytime I hear Brian’s new band doing old BB material it always pales in comparison.

I don’t get the first couple negative comments. This sounds pretty good, and is definetely something a Beach Boys fan would enjoy. If you sit there and expect him to write “Good Vibrations” every time you will be disapointed, but what I hear is the most coherent, interesting work he has done in years.

You are right on Michael. I think fans of Brian, true fans, know what to expect from the 66 yr old Beach Boy. His concerts are fun, the music is excellent and professional. “I’ve heard a few tracks from “That Lucky Old Sun” and they seem fine to me. I’m not expecting another SMILE album. Just to have Brian around to create more music is a blessing. Rock on Brian!

…And a great big HELLO from Capitol Records!

The first two comments are ignorant as well as moronic.

  8. The negative comments puzzle me, too. Granted, his solo work has never been up to par compared with the early BB material, but this sounds top-notch: strings, lush harmonies – a perfect coda to a stellar career.

Totally perplexed by the hating as well. That he finished Smile, put it out, and had a hella successful tour of it is a major miracle in and of itself. To top that off with an album of new material that, to be certain, is not up to Smile or Pet Sounds level is still quite a feat from someone we never thought we’d hear anything from again. And I for one am psyched to get a “finished” version of “can’t wait too long’.

I have seen him twice , the guy is well past his sell by date,he does not even play the keybord but hides behind a great band. and if you look at any of his latest stuff he is almost catatonic .He used to be good but face it folks, these days he is been wheeled out to make a few bucks, To many drugs man .

Yes I agree. He was good 40 years ago. but this latest pile of garbage ? Stop making excuses.,Mccartney or paul simon or clapton are all around the same age, yet the still walk the walk, Look a chuck berry he is 82 . Wilson is a veg , Pet sounds sounds like a bad demmo in places, come on ,you know i speak the truth. open your ears and listen .
