The young Nashville-via-Brooklyn via-Chicago-via-Michigan man has returned with a second album. David Vandervelde’s debut landed him on our list of ones to watch, squarely on the back of the Bolan/Bowie revivalism of “Nothin’ No.” This time out he remains enamored with the ’70s, and again he’s worked with ex-Wilco bro Jay Bennett. “Someone Like You”‘s lyrics still land like a young guy trying to play the part, with references to rock & roll (“what have you gone done, you left him lying with a loaded gun”) and cocaine, but the sounds are again impressively authentic, all sustained organs and warm AM golden melodies, and just maybe a little of his new home in Nashville making its way in via an earthy, back porch shuffle.

This album was a huge dissapointment for me. I can’t recall a follow-up I was looking forward to more. I really loved the “Moonstation House Band” disc for its rawness and 70′s influences. The new disc is slow and vibey, but most of the songs sound really similar. It’s not bad, but it’s not anything near what I expected. I understand that artists evolve, but this album seems like a departure. which is strange because he has released so litte work previously.
I really love the new album, although it is quite a departure. Give it a few more listens and I think you’ll really start to enjoy the well crafted melodies.
The new album is a letdown. Pretty boring and forgettable. Also, whats up with no touring behind this album? Seems like Secretly and David kinda knew the new one was a stinker.
I disagree with both toughguy and Scott. Yes, this album is different from Moonhouse in many ways; it has more of a sunny, 70′s AM pop vibe than the bluesy glam of MHSB. Have you really listened to it, though? Take “Hit The Road”… that’s a direct derivative of “Nothin’ No”. Boring? How about “Lyin’ in Bed”, with its 3 minutes-plus guitar solo that asbolutely sizzles? Not to mention unlike MHSB, which had some really fantastic and yet really terrible moments, this album is a consistent pleasure all the way through, with maybe one misstep. This is the sound of an artist figuring himself out – Vandervelde knows he can rock – now he’s playing with dynamics. Watch, the third album will be a great surprise. To the point of him not touring, I’m sure he’ll tour, it’s likely that he hasn’t booked dates completely yet. If he does, go see him, because the man owns the guitar live.

I really like the record, too. The production is crystal clear with modern touches that accentuate the laid back seventies vibe (e.g., the vocal delay in the chorus of “I will be fine”). Rather than Marc Bolan, I’m getting a Gene Clark/Graham Parsons feeling this time around. I love the MSHB record, but it almost seems overwrought compared to the sunny freedom of this one.
Hi! I’m new to this forum and could use some help figuring out how the MP3s work.
First off, I should say I’m a disabled senior and am a little slow on the uptake, so it takes me a while to figure things out on these computers. (And since this is such an old thread, I wonder if anyone will even be reading this.)
But I thought I would start here to see what happens.
I really like the song “Someone Like You” by David Vandervelde, and so I’ve been coming to this page to listen to it each day. The trouble is that with my free dial-up connection it takes about twenty minutes (or more?) for the song to download. So, I’m wondering if theres a way for me to save it to my computer so I can listen to it whenever want.
I’m running Windows 2K on an old hand-me-down laptop and use Firefox 2. BTW, if I try clicking the down arrow at the right of the MP3 player that pops up to play the song, it crashes Firefox. I noticed what looks like the QuickTime logo popping up before the song starts to download. Do I need to install QuickTime?
If this is the wrong place to post questions, I hope you won’t flame me to badly, and will point me to where I should be asking them.

Hey! I I think I just figured out the answer to my question, so I wonder if there’s a way to delete the message I posted an hour or so ago.
It turns out I had a QuickTime player plug-in installed in my version of Firefox 2, and had it set as the default media player for MP3 files.
I just changed that setting, so I think I may have solved the problem of what was making my browser crash.
