Bloomberg reports Elbow’s Seldom Seen Kid pulled out a sorta longshot win over the likes of Burial, Radiohead (four time nominees, still no win), and the Last Shadow Puppets for this year’s Merc Prize, meaning that is going to be one hot torrent this week.

finalllllly, some wider recognition, and a damn fine album too
Yeah, I have no compliants. Congrats!
I remember hearing something about them breaking up, is this true? By the way, awesome album!
Such splendid news! Hopefully this nod will garner them the worldwide acclaim that has unjustly eluded him thus far.
good for them!
(not sarcasm!)
i was gladly surprised!
seriously, i think the seldom seen kid was the best album nominated… don’t come with your in rainbows flags, you radiohead worshippers!
back to radiohead for a moment, if they didn’t get it for their “masterpieces” they were not getting it for in rainbows. it’s actually hard for them to get this award without it seeing like a lifetime achievement award, rather than album quality.
the mercury prize has some identity crisis, to be honest. as it was conceived as an alternative for the brit awards and to recognize “new and upcoming” talent, hence the money prize. now it’s neither!
good programs, yahoo you rockin’ tht’s why you got rockmail keep it up. I LIKE IT i deserve yo music CHEERS.
COMPLETELY deserved! And a long time coming! They didn’t say they were breaking up, they just said that The Seldom Seen Kid could possibly be their last ALBUM (as in, iTunes, etc. are ruining albums, so they might just do EPs and one-off singles instead of full-lengths).
Yes, this is great news! The Seldom Seen Kid is one of those records that really keep growing on you. One Day Like This is the festival song of the year.
i admit that i often confuse their music with Doves.
do they not sound eerily similar?
i admit that i often confuse their music with Doves.
do they not sound eerily similar?
No.
No. Doves is better.
I have to disagree with you re: Doves. I really liked their first two albums, but apart from the singles on Some Cities, the album was a complete snooze. And another thing setting Elbow apart from Doves is that Garvey & company are incredible live, whereas Doves and their singer with the fucking tree-sized bass are DOA.
this record is a grower, yes
