I subscribed to Uncut for almost a decade (we finally parted ways this summer, though I still have every CD) and while many issues went unread in recent years, I got to know their editors’ tastes pretty well. Unlike NME, which is obsessed with hyping the next Oasis, Uncut has a predilection for bands they deem authentically, unquestionably American, which means lots of coverage of nu-folkies like Fleet Foxes and bar bands like Hold Steady, but never hip-hop. So with that in mind, I don’t see many surprises on the mag’s year-end list. Mojo, on the other hand, threw a few welcome curveballs in their Top 50, including Flying Lotus, The Week That Was, and a handful of LPs I’ve never heard of. And for those keeping score, the only band who has received countdown kudos in every rock monthly we’ve looked at so far is TV On The Radio.

let me be the first to say this lists suck and anyone who agrees with even one choice on this list is a stupid idiot who deserves to rot in hell and listen to relaxation of the asshole for most of eternity. this list is so bad i want to vomit. obviously the best album to 2k8 was third by fleet fox parade and i don’t see it on either or this lists. that or malkmus and the pixies you’re living all over my daydream nation. whoever reads either of these magazines is so stupid that i hate them
what? are you twelve?
he’s clearly JOKING
it’s not funny, but it’s a JOKE
More like mad in milWACKY, amiright? let this be a lesson: NEVER mention the names of your favorite bands to anyone under 20.
oy i just wanted to see how many people i could piss off in a comment without being racist. and it worked pretty well. and also the fleet foxes are really good you guys and it’s nice to see them get some recognition. the walkmen i agree got robbed, you and me is a damn good album that reminds me a lot of alligator.
p.s. i’m not actually from milwaukee, and i haven’t even been to south dakota (here comes the coda)
well since you guys were talking about albums that should be on any list this year i vote for king khan and the shrines(the supreme genius of)the very best soul garage album ive heard in ages.utterly fantastic.
Or, instead of Vampire Weekend, Shearwater’s far superior album. Or the underrated albums by Okkervil River and Wolf Parade. Or Deerhunter, Why?, Department of Eagles…
Department of Eagles might end up being the most underrated album of the year.
If that photo of the Fleet Foxes guy was on Perez Hilton, it’d be filed under “If you are easily offended then do not click here” and there would be multiple comments such as “Ewwwww” “Fugly!” and “Gross!”
he is actually a really good looking guy. made me all sweaty palmed when i saw him at a local coffee shop…
the two most robbed albums this year from top 20 lists
1. Beach House
2. Department of Eagles
ridiculous how little love they are getting.
Not to mention the Walkmen, or am I the only person that loved You & Me
No, I too loved You & Me. It’s on my top ten list (that no one will get to see because I’m not a music journalist).
again, still waiting for my alopecia…
Agreed-why isn’t anyone mentioning it?
Because it’s unlistenable. It sounds like They Might Be Giants without the nerdy humor and charm.
are we even talking about the same album?
I’m just sick of reading “Why doesn’t anyone else but like 6 people like the new Why album?” because it isn’t that good, sorry. If it was, you wouldn’t be complaining so damn much. I’m glad that you like it, but seriously, give it up, it’s a niche record very few people are going to dig, so chill.
HAPPY T-GIVEZ INTERNET!
man you couldn’t be more wrong.
u r a retard 4real
i loved you and me, it’s in my top three!
Agreed, The Walkmen and Dept. of Eagles are in need of some serious year-end love.
completely agree
It’s kind of annoying how so many people missed the boat on Bon Iver last year that they feel they need to count it as a 2008 album just cause it got wider release.
Has the Fleet Foxes backlash started yet?
Can you be a member of the Fleet Foxes backlash if you never liked them to begin with?
sign me up
Im happy to see The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, and Beck finally get some love.
Wasnt Yeasayer- All Our Cymbals a 2007 release?
Lists are based on voting. Each voter hasn’t had the time to listen to every single album during the year. The ones at the top aren’t necessarily the most highly rated(though they could be), but rather ones that received the most consistantly good responses. Even some of the writers for theses publications probably think the final rankings suck. That list you have going on in your head isn’t going to show up in verbatim.
As for things that aren’t included at all, one of two things can be said. 1) Not enough people heard it or 2) Most people didn’t like it. If the former is the case, that sucks, and it’s probably something worth talking about, but if the latter is the case, you can’t just say, “These people are idiots!” If you don’t have the education to defend something in musical terms, it’s just an opinion, and if it’s an opinion than it’s not right or wrong.
A lot of these lists start from November ’07 and go to November ’08, as opposed to starting in January ’08 and ending at January ’09. That’s how they get a Best Of 2008 list out before 2008 is even over. Or they could just completely ignore every album that comes out after their best of list does, but before the new year…
still waiting for a list mentioning titus andronicus’ fine album! go pitchfork!
At least The Black Keys got a mention.
lol for a second there I thought Mojo said Neil Diamond made the tenth best album this year!
it’s mathematically unpossible that there were 50 records better than the walkmen’s You and Me in 08.
there’s a band called ‘Man Man’ and they put out an album this year called ‘Rabbit Habits’. it is very good.
fo the realz! Rabbit Habits was incredible, it gets no love.
Starfucker?
STARFUCKER?
that was also really good
but really
RABBIT HABITS!!!!
Dig Lazarus Dig has made each list in addition to TV on the radio, I think.
So much Portishead! Nicely done.

am i the only one who agree to this list? yes i am. but well…where is department of eagles? gum…you’re my only hope. right?
It’s not that bad, actually. Although, 3 MGMT in the top 10 is a little much. But most of those songs are good songs – I say most because some of them make my ears bleed. But I like how they gave Hercules And Love Affair #1, and even included Whitest Boy Alive.
I’m really happy that someone put James Blackshaw on their list. I doubt we’ll see it on any others (possibly pitchfork, but not very high i’m betting). It’s seriously one of the best albums of the year (how cliche?)
It’s good to see Neon Neon getting some list love.
I like Mojo’s inclusion of some world music, and the Peter Broderick album deserves attention. I haven’t heard (of) Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Our Broken Garden, or Goldmund, but they all have fantastic covers, so if that’s they criteria, well done, Mojo. Oasis, AC/DC, and Metallica kinda kill the buzz, though.
I saw Eli “Paperboy” Reed open for Robert Randolph this summer. He’s great. He has a 50′s motown kinda thing going.
that should say 60′s motown
Good for Fleet Foxes! #2 and #1 respectively feels pretty good. But, really? Again with the Metallica? Jesus.
Am I the only one who finds it conspicuous that She & Him only made one list so far, but that their spot was #1 on that list? That reeks of a pretty drastic miscalculation or lapse of judgment on Paste’s part….at least in my opinion.
Albums? What are they?
The list of singles is officially 87% more fun.

I’m so glad Fleet Foxes finally get some recognition. I know they sold out becuase they made so much money this year, but they’ve been around for so long and deserve it.
what?
1) they’ve been getting ubiquitous recognition since 2007.
2) how did they sell out? i mean, the album wasn’t any good, but so what if they made some money?
Why the bullet points? It reads more like a run on sentence.
i dunno, enumeration the ways in which he was wrong sounds good
they’ve been around since 2006 – 2 years is hardly “so long”, is it? Especially considering this is their first full-length. It’s not like they’ve had material overlooked year after year.
And, bitch, they didn’t sell out. As far as I know they haven’t done any work with Coca Cola or agreed to write a song for High School Musical 4 yet. If you can make a lot of money by doing what you originally set out to do, then you’re a winner, not a sell-out. What they didn’t want was to become a “hype-band” – which unfortunately, is exactly what they have become through no fault of their own.
Um, it appears we need a quick lesson in diction here.
Sold Out – typically used to describe when a band changes their sound to cater to a more mainstream audience.
Went Mainstream – Typically refers to mainstream (i.e. radio) acceptance of a band.
Once a CD has been made, it can “Go mainstream” but the CD, if it was heralded as an artistic feat when it was first released, cannot all of a sudden become less artistic when it receives public recognition. The negative stigma we have attached to musical popularity is ridiculous, and indicative of a whole lot of insecurity in our culture. Form your own opinions and stop looking at mainstream acceptance like it’s the ultimate evil. Be excited when a good band starts to receive recognition that they deserve.
(Oops, sorry for posting twice, not sure how that happened…)
i’m not the editor of a magazine, but here’s my list: http://eatingtheearth.blogspot.com/2008/11/best-records-of-2008.html
no tv on the radio here either. but at least i included OKKERVIL RIVER, SAMAMIDON AND RYAN & THE CARDINALS!
Flying Lotus!!! Yessssssssssss…..
What!?! No CHINESE DEMOCRACY!?!?!?!
How could they….
hey. hazim here…again.lol
Mojo’s list isn’t bad. they tried for some variety, but any list with AC/DC or Oasis in their year end list is …bleh bleh.
It’s nice to see The Week hat Was there! I like ‘em lots!
Finally, Wild Beasts is getting some love.
Sometimes when I read these year end lists I just get so down because no one has the same taste in music as me, and I really wanted to feel better about stuff and also a sense of community gained through self-association with random music critics!! I mean come on, I’m CEREAL GUYS!!
@ Carrie
Filter: #7 She & Him
Duly noted
Still though….
Flying Lotus is the shit. About time that cat got some love.
Apparently magazine editors can’t see ghost colours…
eh, it probably belongs in the top 50, but it was so much not as good as ‘…neon love’ that it probably bummed some people out. i bet the next one will be a corker.
Yay, Shearwater. So underrated.
Finally some love for British Sea Power for a great rock n roll record that is getting consistently overlooked, prolly due to its January release. It’s a Top Fiver for me this year.
CAN THEY STOP FRIGGEN PUTTING RECORDS FROM 2007 ON THESE LISTS!!!!!!!!!
goodness
I agree on the point flying lotus and it’s good to see Neon Neon and Wild Beasts get some props as well
I think a lot of these are about “the band” (whatever band it is) and not really the record. If an obscure band puts out a record in October / November there is no way it’ll be on most lists which kind of invalidates those lists as Oct/Nov is a great time to release and listen to music… while if they put it out in Feb/March and are in the public eye all year the critics will be more likely to remember them come AOTY list time. Here are five records objectively better than my band’s crappy record that haven’t shown up on many lists…
1. Department of Eagles – In Ear Park
2. Dungen – 4
3. Blitzen Trapper – Furr
4. Beach House – Devotion
5. Walkmen – You & Me
I like my band (Fleet Foxes) ok and am excited to work on new stuff but I really don’t think the LP is good at all. The EP maybe is good but even that is a little whack to my ears now. These are all magazines with 3 month lead times so maybe the online lists will include the aforementioned records more…
How cool would it be if this was ACTUALLY ROBIN PECKNOLD.
And yes, great list of 5 albums only Pitchfork will recognize, sadly.
uh, i hope that’s not actually the Fleet Foxes dude. If it is, you’re walking the thin line between sincere self-deprication (which can be endearing) and calculated, outright self-pity (which is rather unbecoming). i agree with you that the album wasn’t good, but at least stand by what you’ve created.
Robin, every time you say your album–which I loved–is crappy, it makes me feel stupid for listening to and liking it. I might just start believing you and not even give your next one a try at all, even though I paid money to see you live in London a couple weeks ago and thought you were amazing. Please have more respect for your fans.
It probably is him. He’s commented here before.
http://stereogum.com/archives/video/more-on-why-you-should-probably-see-fleet-foxes-li_011305.html#comment-809687
Hi Robin!
It still doesn’t necessarily mean it’s him People are pretty good at impostering other people. Although I’m not sure what the point of that would’ve been…so maybe it is Robin.
Robin, if it’s you, I’m sorry I was high for the first time in my life in Seattle when I saw you and I was so paranoid by all the people around I didn’t enjoy your live set. Either of them. Plus, my favourite band of the day, The National, were cancelled for the stage and you guys came on instead, so it wasn’t your fault. I love your album though.
cool it, fanboy
only “fanboy” thing I said in that was that I liked the album. and for the record, I’ve listened to it twice, soooo.????
people are good at impostering other people? wha?
impostering.. not a word.
lol
kinds og leon? neon neon? come oooon, they’re joking.
but i agree with Mojo’s choice of Un Dia by Juana Molina. fucking excellent record.
also i’m super sad about the lack of Cloud Cult on any of these lists.
robin looks like the geico caveman in the article’s picture.
Robin likes to comment and be overly self depricating online all the time
It’s definitely him
*awww shucks robin we really like your record!”
Any chance for “The Evening Descends” by Evangelicals making one of these lists?
hey! i thought that album was pretty good too. And they were awesome live.
I hope it does make a list.
Agreed. What a ridiculously amazing record.
why does everyone that reads stereogum or comments on top records of the year
just do whatever pitchfork tells them to. would love to see a list put forward by someone who has some independent thinking. pitchfork is just the US NME… if i hear one more average tribal band or another band from brooklyn i am going to scream!
where is ra ra riot’s ‘the rhumb line’ on any of these lists?
Agreed, the rhumb line is being ignored by all these lists and that’s a shame.
Wow!!! Those are some shit lists… no MICROCASTLE.. what?? Deerhunter definitely deserve to be near the top of every list this year! But the lack of others such as: Department of Eagles, Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, Atlas Sound, and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson leads me to believe that these magazines missed out on or just turned a blind eye to some qualitiy innovative music this year. Too bad for them…
I was bored by microcastle. You should realize, though, that both Uncut and Mojo have a far amount of lead time on these lists and records released later in the calendar year – like “Microcastle” – tend to get shafted. I’m optimistic that it will grow on me, but if I were writing for one of those magazines, I wouldn’t put it on my list yet. That is of course simply my opinion…
Cryptograms kicked ass though.
Why must there always be backlash? Can’t Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend just be appreciated as good bands? Also………AC/DC, REALLY?!?!?
OK, this bullshit stops now. I don’t care, at all, about VW (I don’t think I’ve heard one of their songs in almost a year now) and I’m only marginally familiar with Fleet Foxes work (what I’ve heard here at SG so far is non-musically offensive enough that I’ve got no beef with it); BUT what I can’t stand now is all the “why the backlash?” people. You do realize that *no one* has said one bad thing about VW in these comments, right? In fact, you’re only the *second* person to even bring them up! And *no one* has spoken ill of Fleet Foxes, EXCEPT for the guy IN THAT VERY BAND who decided to post a list of albums he thought people might have overlooked (props, to that).
Besides, *none* of these bands are actually popular enough to warrant actual backlash, something akin to what was leveled against Madonna in the mid to late 90s. None of them are getting laughed out of their own country by mainstream America.
I made a top 10 list for myself, and I had a split-tie for first over both of Los Campesino!’s releases this year.
Tragically, they’re nowhere on anywhere! Daaag, yo!
Yes! Agreed!
Am I the only person who thinks that M83′s Saturdays = Youth deserves at least a top five spot????
i agree.
yes, yes, yes. placed at #3 on my list.
It was a good record. I don’t think their fans really understood what they were doing.
gang gang
(See photo) “I get it…I quit, but I get it.” (Think Geico tennis commercial)
I’m very pleased to see the Fleet Foxes get some recognition. They’re album is in my top 5 for sure. BUT, one major album that I think all of these lists are overlooking is In the Future by Black Mountain. It’s an extremely entertaining and original album.
Anyone else agree??
bands that are cool to hate: pitchfork-approved bands that find popularity among non-hipsters (fleet foxes, vampire weekend, MGMT, kings of leon, the Hold Steady)
bands that are cool to like: pitchfork-approved noise-rock and electronica (department of eagles, deerhunter, hercules and love affair, deerhoof, cut copy, the walkmen, the bug, vivan girls)
oh well at least nick cave is getting some love
Yeah, The Walkmen are neither noise-rock nor electronica. Good try though.
The Walkmen are neither noise-rock nor electronica. FAIL
Dude, you stole my thunder.
You are an idiot… For one Pitchfork h absolutely hates Kings Of Leon and MGMT… I think MGMT got a 6 something and Kings of Leon got like a 4 something… And they both suck and nobody likes them… twol none of those bands are noise or electronica… Especially Walkmen…. Nick Cave?? Good, but you really think 50 year olds on their 20th record are making the best music around?? Come on??
hey, chill man, i’m just saying what i notice
for the record, i DO hate Kings of Leon, and (despite revisiting them about every month) simply cannot get into VW. MGMT was cool until I saw them live, thank God I had pot.
also for the record, i DO like the walkmen (and the hold steady…and nick cave…but not kings of leon…never)
ALL OF YOU ASSHOLES FORGOT ABOUT MY ALBUM
RABBIT HABITS IS THIS GENERATION’S SGT PEPPERS
I HATE ALL YOUR SHIT
Abe Vigoda is finally getting some love.
new blog please, the picture alone is something to complain about
THE LINE OF BEST FIT have just posted up their Readers Poll 2008 List and it’s pretty fucking awesome…. 50 albums in all. Vote here:
http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/2008/11/readers-choice-award/
i will hate every list until i see Los Campesinos!
I didn’t have the time to read everyone’s comments.
I agree with those giving props to the Department of Eagles (g-ddang that is one beautifully chill and hypnotizing album. Agree with that Beach House. Does no one like beautiful, slower tempo music anymore?
Here’s what I think is missing from these lists:
Annuals’ Such Fun
Band of Horses Cease to Begin (if it was released in 2008)
Raphael Saadique’s new album is one of the few classic r&b/soul of this decade
oh and I really think praise for the Fleet Foxes is totally well deserved. their album and ep were fantastic. their live show will only continue to improve.
And where is the love for the Menahan Street Band? that is one superbly chill instrumental soul album.
Cease to Begin was 2007.
no one has mentioned the Magnetic Fields – Distortion yet. booo.
why will no one recognize the dodos? As I’ve said, lets hope that woxys 97 best will float my boat
i have long hair and everytime i see a picture like the one above, i think about cutting it.
My top 10 (As of Now)
1) Bon Iver – For Emma, For Ever Ago
2) Okkervil River – The Stand-Ins
3) Bound Stems – The Family Afloat
4) Death Cab for Cutie – Narrow Stairs
5) Drive-By Truckers – Brighter Than Creation’s Dark
6) My Morning Jacket – Evil Urges
7) Kanye West – 808s & Heartbreaks
8) The Hold Steady – Stay Positive
9) Jamie Lidell – Jim
10) The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks
Fleet Foxes
Randy Newman
Elbow
TV on the Radio
The Week That Was
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Sigor Ros
The Walkmen
Sun Kil Moon
nobody cares!
Why have I not seen Spiritualized getting any love at all?
santogold? rabbit habits? ode to sunshine? fate? we brave bee stings and all? what is going on? why is there no love?…while all hour cymbals is a fantastic album, it came out last year! wtf…
the felice brothers! nice.
Saw the Felice Brothers live. Honestly, that band can suck my dick. Especially the drummer. That guy was a douchebag like no other. He parts seas for other douchebags.
I updated the post w/ all of Uncut’s fifty (Black Mountain, phew). Have at it…
Black Mountain? Little love.
Wolf Parade? No Love.
Fucked Up? Tiny bit o’ love.
King Khan? No love for you.
Constantines? forget about that lovin.
i agree about khan
The Walkmen & Department of Eagles
Two excellent bands, fully deserving of more praise than they received in these lists. Also, don’t The Walkmen seem preeminently American?
Well, I’ve agreed and disagreed with some of these posts, and now I’m going to weigh in on what I consider some overlooked albums on these crap lists.
WHY?-ALOPECIA and OF MONTREAL-SKELETAL LAMPING!!! I mean, really? These are both my number 1 (couldn’t decided which to choose).
Also, what about Evangelicals, Titus Andronicus, Nat Baldwin, Chad VanGaalen, Parenthetical Girls, Plants and Animals, Ruby Suns??? Those were all brilliant!
Even some of the heavy weights are missing: Wolf Parade, Deerhunter, No Age. I, for one, loved 2008, but not the lists that come with it.
El Guincho.
&
Girl Talk
No love for Centro-matic/South San Gabriel double-album Dual Hawks???
Why are so many lists forgetting about Wolf Parade? I thought At Mount Zoomer was an incredible record! So did Rolling Stone, Spin, and many a blog.
FUCK OFF. It’s all totally middle-aged fuck off-ness. Yeasayer was totally 2007, but perhaps their old ears didn’t quite hear the goddamn thing until a year later! Wankers.
Can I swear any more to get my point across?
Anyway, my blog is about to have the top 20 tracks of 2008 posted so pop by in the next few days to see a real list to debate properly. Top 50 albums of 2008 assumes we had at least 4 gppd albums released every single month – a total load of unrealistic pap if you ask me!

What about the LP’s delivered by the Dodo’s and M83?
Both great
Portishead #1 of the year? With that album?! Yeesh.
It’s amazing that these lists get so much backlash. What happened to a personal taste in music? Instead, it seems things like this just promote a “general consensus in music” that annoys people when their tastes aren’t included in it. It’s music, there’s no right answer to the best albums of the year. People are getting annoyed that Vampire Weekend and Department of Eagles didn’t make some list? Turn off your computer, it doesn’t matter at all….
*gasp* Logic!? BURN THE WITCH!
Yeah, but seriously, no one on the internet seems to understand the concept of opinions.
Continuing with my promise to say only positive things about this year’s lists: I like that Uncut put Flight of the Concords on their list. Comedy love. And the fact that Mojo not only put The Week That Was on their list but put them in the TOP TEN makes me want to kiss them all over. But not really.
And that picture up top is scaring the shit out of me. Robin Pecknold is clearly some sort of strangely adorable mythological creature.
Yeah, it’s interesting to see that these lists have music outside of the indie sphere. I mean, Gavin Bryars and Neil Cowley both made the Mojo list and I haven’t read anything on any blog about either of them. It seems that these lists were compiled of somebody’s personal favourites and somehow that doesn’t wash with people. That’s about it with my preaching. Sorry about that.
ELI REED is simply amazing live. He is one of the best acts I have ever seen, so much energy and so much soul. That album is great and is something I could be listening to in ten years, it desserves that spot.
I don’t get why everyone likes that shitty band Glasvegas

not a bad list, but is Kanye’s album really “overrated”? I just feel like when it even HAS been rated, the ratings haven’t been that friendly. ALthough I love it.
Please get rid of that friggin’ picture. I really can’t stand Fleet Foxes most days, but that image makes me want to hunt that guy down…
hooray for black keys!
what about fuck buttons? their album was good but i havent seen them on any lists yet/
exiting arm – subtle . . . water curses . . . the kills . . . fuck buttons . . .
All Hour Cymbals came out in 2007, what the heck?
where are bloc party’s imtimacy and of montreal’s skeletal lamping?!?!
not.
i agree with everyone who posted in disbelief that Department of Eagles didn’t make these lists. Especially Robin P., if that’s him. It absolutely blows my mind that In Ear Park is being so overlooked. I really hope the blogs come through for that album. I think its a masterpiece.
You cool indie kids and your crazy music!! Fleet Foxes stinks by the way, Deerhunter is junk, and so is Man Man or any number of these psychadelia crap bands that can find a tune. Pitchfork can f off, they have a problem with any cd that anyone would actually listen to.
Bob Seger sucks.
I think Uncut’s list might be my favorite list so far, because it has Black Mountain the highest out of all of them, and it has no sign of Kanye West or Lil Wayne.
I have a question though, Stereogum’s awards have Radiohead – In Rainbows as a selection for the album of the year. Are all of these other sources including them as an album of ’08? Because if so, then they’re overlooking what might be the best album of the year, if it counts.
I liked the Uncut list. It seemed intelligent, and it wasn’t full of music that seems to be there because it “has” to be, except for metallica.
there any chicks up in this joint?
Sam Amidon – All is Well should be on everybody’s list.
Neil Diamond #10??? Really? No, Really?
Haven’t heard the Paul Weller, but I might have to give it a spin, disappointed in the last couple.
where is the love for wolf parade? that album got great reviews and was fucking awesome.
My feelings r hurt. I’ve made a bunch of money, made hit records, and slept with a lot of women. Your posting is going to send me into a shame spiral. Haha
they’re #1 on all of my lists
but i think its kinda funny Fuck Buttons were listed at 34 on both
delta spirit?
did i hear it right? is judd nelson now fronting the germs? that is an excellent idea!! now if we can only get robert wagner to front a reunited black flag….then we will be onto something…
Apparently Uncut didn’t like The Week That Was enough to get the band name/album title right. I would hate to see how they butchered those albums < 50.
my top ten of 2008 comprised of albums i have not and will never listen to:
-bon iver
-vampire weekend
-tv on the radio
-gang gang dance
-fleet foxes
-kings of leon
-the hold steady
-drive by truckers
-jenny lewis
-glasvegas
